"Okay!" Vanille clapped her hands together and took a look around the Best Buy. Was this even the place the cool kids bought their shiny stuff at? She had no idea. But she hoped Jess could help her find the things she needed there. She looked over at her friend, "I don't have a good TV, so I guess I gotta start there. Or should I pick out what kinda gaming console I want first, and get a TV that works really well with it?"
Jess was bent over looking at all of the racks of games and the accessories that came with it. Yeah this was definitely the cool place that people went to, to get all of this kind of stuff. “Probably a good idea. Basically you’ve got the PS3 and the X-Box 360. The PS3 is also a blu-ray player, which means you can have really high quality games and watch blu ray movies. It requires a shiny tv, and a HD cable. But the thing is that there are some games on both systems that are just.. for that system. It sucks.”
"What? Oh, that's not nice of them. How can they do that to people?" Vanille frowned a bit, folding her arms and giving scolding looks to the boxes of both consoles for a bit, like that would actually solve anything.
"... well, I guess they each do their thing different, maybe it's harder to get some games to work on both," She added, after a few moments of thought. She poked at the spine of one of the nearby game titles, "Right... So. Do you have both?"
“People will do anything to make more money, I guess.” Jess shrugged a little bit. “About 99% of the games can be played on either one though. Once in a while though, you get one that you wish was on the console you had.” Which was sad.
“As a matter of fact, I only have a playstation. I want an x-box, but I think I’m going to wait until the new x-box comes out before I get the old one. It’ll be cheaper.” And she didn’t want an x-box one.
"I think I like the idea that the playstation'll give me a blue-ray player, too. I mean... it's kinda all in one. You can do more things with it, yeah?" Vanille thought the sections of games for the various consoles looked a little like it leaned on the side of a playstation, too. There were more titles available for it, or maybe they just stocked more.
“Yeah that’s why I got mine. When you watch something on blu-ray, nothing quite compares.” Standard definition was ridiculous. Jess nodded. “Yep. It’s a good choice. We should get one of those.” She reached up and grabbed one of the boxes and put it in the cart. “Okay. On to a television!” She lead the way over to where they were. “How big do you want it?”
Vanille grabbed an extra controller off the pile, in blue - for Fang, or other people who might want to play with her. Then she followed Jess along to the TV department. There were a lot of models, some of them larger than she ever thought was possible.
"Gosh, some of these are almost as big as movie screens! I don't think I need one that big. But I guess I won't want a tiny one either, if I'm gonna play nice games or watch movies I want to be able to really see them." Vanille tapped a finger against her chin.
Thank goodness they had grabbed a cart for all of this stuff. “Yeah they’re getting bigger and bigger each year, I think.” And better at the quality of the picture too. There were definitely a lot of options though. “You definitely need something that’s big enough to read instructions on the screen if you had to.” Once Jess had a tv that she couldn’t read how to play the game. It was awful.
“Does it need to go in a specific space? Because then you need one that’s clearly a certain width or whatever but if not.. Then just.. pick which you like.”
"My apartment's not huge or anythin', yeah... I've gotta have my bed and my living area all in the same spot, but I put up these nice screens I found to kinda give me a separate bedroom, and I think I could put a tv stand up right in front of 'em." Vanille looked around at the various screens. She wanted one that was big enough to feel big, without feeling so big that it was 'too big' for the room.
And another thing occurred to her, "I guess I'll need a stand, too! To put this stuff on, and the tv. But one thing at a time, right."
There was a model nearby to them that had a very very crisp display. The color on it was less washed out than on some of them, and she walked over to it, "42 inches is still pretty big, but it doesn't feel TOO big..."
“Forty two inches is pretty big. I think it’s a good one,” Jess agreed, looking it over. The tv looked fine to her. “Okay. We’ll get this one. It’s on sale too, which is good. Now we just need an HDMI cable, and then whatever games you want.” She hm’d a bit. “The only question now is if I pick up the tv myself and make people look at me funny or go and get some guys to do it.”
"Oh it's your call! I don't mind at all that I'm hangin' out with a superhero, I think it's cool you can lift a TV all by yourself! But if you don't wanna draw attention, I can find some guys." Vanille smiled at Jess, then looked around a bit like she was trying to find them already, just in case.
Jess laughed. She rarely got to show off her skills. So she reached forward and grabbed up the tv with ease and then set it into the cart. Best of both worlds. She even grabbed the cable that they needed. “Okay. Now onto games. What kind do you like?”
A few nearby onlookers gaped at the strength hiding in the woman, and Vanille simply waved at them and grinned.
She spent the time on the way back towards the video games trying to decide what kind of things she liked, "Well I liked that angry birds and that candy crush game, but I hear that you can get into all kinds of more complicated stuff on these consoles. I think I heard that Dragon Age and something called a Mass Effect were good ones? And then there's something called Final Fantasy where you like... pretend to be some other people and go exploring a world with bad guys in it that you fight, but it's telling you a story, too? Oh! Are there any games where you just kick someone else's butt? Like... you can play them with someone?"
She pondered, "I guess there's lots of games where you pretend you're a soldier and you shoot terrorists and stuff, too. I'm not sure what I like, maybe I should pick one of each type."
Jess was so used to that kind of look. “Quite more complicated. But good. They’re easy enough to learn, honest. But Dragon Age and mass Effect are good one. There’s a load of Final Fantasy games. Bunches and bunches. You should get some. Oh let’s see.. yeah there’s fighter games. We can get one of those.” There were a bunch. They just had to pick the right one. “One of each is always good. There’s lots of shooter games. Just depends on how much you like your story with the game.”
"Well, I think I really like the idea of getting into some kinda story or exploring some world that I'm never gonna see. But I also like the idea of playin' games that you can play with other people, I know that the shooty ones are ones you can play with a friend or get online?" Vanille pointed her finger at the newest Battlefield game, "Yeah, that one! Where you pretend to be a soldier an'get online to help your squad do stuff!"
Vanille sounded like she had no concept of the kind of people which usually played those games or what she'd really be encountering once she started playing.
“They have both of those kinds of games. They’re both fun though. We can get you one of those too.” She liked that Vanille was excited to play all of these games. All Jess could do was pick out the ones that she liked and the ones that she could recommend. There were a lot of different types of games that she could recommend, but mostly she left it up to her to decide which ones that she wanted to play.
“Just be careful with the people you can play with online. It’s mostly guys.. and they’re mostly giant assholes. The kind that tell you that you can’t play games because you’re a girl. They use a lot of .. awful language. Even for me.” Which was something.
That didn't sound like a whole lot of fun. Vanille glared down at the game package she'd picked up off the shelf, like giving the game itself a scolding look would make it's players behave.
Then the scowl faded away, replaced by a determined look, and she put the game in the cart, "Hmph. I'm just gonna have to prove to those mean boys that a girl can TOO kick their butts."
She tapped her lips as she looked at the game rack and tried to pick out her next game, "Which game is your favorite right now?"
Men were kind of stupid that way. Especially fifteen year old boys. “To be fair, a lot of it is fifteen year old boys. But yeah it’s kind of lame. But you should definitely prove it to them. I’m sure you’ll be great at it.”
Jess hmm’d a bit. “Um.. Bioshock Infinite. You definitely have to play that one. The story is really good, and it’s kind of shoot-y stuff. And the actual graphics are SOOOO pretty.”
"Well I'll probably be bad at first, but I can learn!" Vanille read over the box for the Battlefield game again, noting that it was a 'pre-order' code and that the real game wouldn't be coming out for a few weeks.
"Yeah, I'm gonna need some other games for sure! So I'll get this Bioshock Infinite, that'll be good practice and a great story, and then maybe..." She spotted the Mass Effect trilogy, and picked that up, "This one. And... that's gosh, probably enough money to spend for now. It's a good thing I have such a great job!"
Jess grinned some. “Okay. That’s good. Let’s go ring this all up and then somehow get it all into the car.” That was going to be the hard part. Especially with the giant television. She was glad that she could help her friend out though.
"I'm sure it'll be a piece of cake with you along!" Vanille declared, clapping her hands together with very obvious glee before heading towards the cash register. She realised that Jess's car wasn't exactly huge and that the tv would be a squeeze, but she was certain they could figure out a way.
They were going to make it fit. It meant putting down the seats in the back and everything, it would totally fit. Dammit. Jess let Vanille go ahead when it was her turn so that she could pay for the stuff, and then go out to Jess’ car to load everything into it.
The total when they were done ringing everything up was... to say the least, dizzying. But Vanille hadn't been doing much with the money she'd been earning up to this point. She shut her eyes and swiped her card, signed her receipt and grabbed a few bags to carry.
"Let's go! Then we can hook it all up, and I can maybe buy us some pizza!"
“You’ve already spent so much money, I can buy the pizza. No problem. Let’s go set it up.” Jess grinned and hopped in the car to take Vanille and all of her lovely new toys back home. This had been fun, but she couldn’t wait to actually play the video games.
