Billy was out and about, working on doing errands, when he stopped in at the library Barbara worked at. She wasn’t there right now, but he liked the place anyway and had gotten used to it, as the staff had gotten used to seeing him there, as well. He waved to one staffmember and headed for the deep stacks, placing his backpack on a table as he went. Time to get some studying in. He wanted to be prepped on some new subjects in his classes so he could be able to tutor more.
When he rounded a corner, he almost ran into someone, and he fell back, blushing and apologizing. “Sorry! I’m sorry! Didn’t see you there!”
"Oh!" Elizabeth held the books in her hands closer to her chest to stop them spilling on the floor. "Sorry, I..." Elizabeth looked at the boy a little closer. He looked like the boy from Barbara's mind. "Billy?" she asked. "I'm Elizabeth, a friend of Barbara's," she held out her hand to shake his.
Billy blinked, then smiled a little, then nodded. “Oh! Hi!” He grinned a little more. “Nice to meet you, ma’am.” He felt himself grinning in a silly way and tried to stop it. “Any friend of Barbara’s is someone I am glad to know.”
"Well that's very nice to hear," Elizabeth smiled at him. "Are you alright? I'm afraid I get a bit carried away when I'm in the library," she told him.
“Thanks. I’m okay, just distracted. How’re you? How do you know Barbara?” He was curious about this new, to him, friend of Babs’. He wanted to know her life and that meant her friends, too!
“We met here actually,” Elizabeth smiled. “I was looking at the limited edition section when she came across me, but I’d come with the idea to set up a book club actually,” she told him, remembering back to those days while still trying to keep her mental guards up around her new-found telepathy. “And you? How did you and Barbara meet? She told me a lot, but not that.”
Billy smiled. His mind surged with warmth and care for Barbara, and a deep set, and sure love. It was closely met with lust, but the overwhelming thing in his mind was that emotion, the way a word from Barbara could make him feel, and how thinking of her words and her, not even how she looked, just her, could make him lose track of time and grin goofily, much like he was doing now without realizing it. Coming to himself, he pushed away the grin and nodded. “Cool!” He chuckled.
“It was right here, or near here, in the back section. I’ve been an avid library goer since I was in my pre-teens, and I come here a lot. And we just sort of ran into each other here.”
Elizabeth inhaled sharply and closed her eyes as Billy’s mind started to reel over thinking about Barbara. He loved her, lusted over her, respected her. It was all a little overwhelming and she reached out a hand to steady herself on the back of a nearby chair.
“Miss? Are you okay?” He moved to her side, mind on her now, concerned, and he gently touched her side, her arm. Deep within him the power of gods surged, and a touch of it reached out to her, to help her if she needed it.
“I just need a minute,” she told him quietly, trying to push the feelings away which had only intensified by him touching her arm. It took her another minute of concentration, but she brought herself back to her centre. She took a deep breath and looked up at the boy with a lop-sided smile. “Sorry about that,” she told him, sliding out the chair she’d been leaning on so she could sit. “I’ve been learning to cope with a...power that manifested during the time when those meteorites landed around town. It catches me by surprise sometimes is all,” she admitted.
“Of course.” he retreated, and smiled to her. “Its okay.” He nodded to her. Instinctively, he settled opposite her. “What sort of power?” He peered at her, curious now. “Seems a number of people gained powers that way.”
“I had the pleasure of becoming telepathic,” she told him dryly. “I was hoping it would go away, but...here I am, still trying to control it,” she gestured to her head.
Billy nodded and then hmmed and whispered three magic words, and shields sprang up around his mind, closing him off. “How’s that?”
Elizabeth took a moment to take in her surroundings. There was the usual white noise muffled in the background of her head, but there was none of the intense, individual memories and emotions. “That’s...better, thank you,” she looked up at him. “What did you just do?”
“Cast a magical spell which would shield my mind from your perceptions. A useful thing to know.” His smile was lopsided. “I have a little help thinking of such things.” He tapped his temple.
“So you have mental powers too? Barbara told me about your ability to change physically but not about that,” Elizabeth explained.
“No, Magic ones.” He wiggled his fingers. “My power stems utterly from magic” He smiled at her.
Elizabeth grinned and shook her head a little. “I grew up reading about magic in books and now I’m living in a city where I’m telepathic and I’m talking to someone who uses magic,” she gave a little laugh. “I dreamt about it all as a kid, but it’s hard to believe it’s happened in reality. What else can you do then?”
Billy grinned at her. He wiggled his fingers and spoke a soft word, and a book nearby floated to him, opened carefully, and flipped to a particular page, then began to read itself quietly. before he waved a hand, and it went back to the table.
“I like magic. I don’t use it a lot, but I like it.”
Elizabeth sat with her mouth agape as she watched the book float over, read itself then settle on the table. She shook her head in amazement, “Ok, so that is pretty cool. How long have you...known about them?”
“SInce I started Dreaming. A few months. I lived about four years of dreams in that time.” Billy grinned at her. “I mostly don’t tell people, but it comes in handy now and then.”
“Well thank you for telling me,” Elizabeth smiled at him. “So how did you and Barbara meet?”
“You’re welcome.” He grinned. “I was studying, and reading, just a few aisles down from here, really, and we met and talked, and… she made a huge impact on my life.” He nodded
“I know,” Elizabeth replied, a little sadly. “I’m sorry to tell you, but I read Barbara’s mind by accident when she touched me the other week. I know you both mean a lot to each other and it’s a difficult situation for you both.”
Billy nodded, wincing. “Ahhhh. Yes, that makes it a little different.” He looked at her and sighed. “Just don’t tell anyone, please?” He smiled softly. “Barbara would get in trouble.”
“I’ve already told Barbara that I wouldn’t talk about it with anyone,” Elizabeth smiled to reassure him. “Truth is, we spoke quite candidly about it all. She feels very deeply for you, and you do for her, don’t you,” she spoke quietly, looking into his eyes.
He eyed her, and then slowly nodded to Elizabeth. “I love her.” The words were soft and spoken with conviction. “I’ll have to wait almost a year, for anything but those words, but I love her.”
“I’m sorry, I know it must be hard for you both,” Elizabeth said sadly. She’d felt the way both of them felt about it each and it was heart breaking that they couldn’t be together. “Your...restraint,” she quirked a smile. “When it comes to other...prospects, shall we say, is extremely admirable,” Elizabeth told him with a cheeky smile.
Billy looked down. “We do what we have to. The world looks down on even the emotion we feel.” He smiled at her, a little, then he chuckled. And grinned wider. “Thank you. We… try.”
“It can’t be easy for you,” Elizabeth consoled. “You’re a young man after all,” she said. “I can’t tell you what she said, it’s not my place, but she loves you and she wants nothing but the best for you.”
Billy shrugged. “I don’t want to know her secrets except by her own will, And I know. She is an amazing woman. I feel bad sometimes, for putting her in a bad position, but I have to believe we can handle this. Just six months or so to go, now, if I don’t decide to get emancipated.”
“She certainly is,” Elizabeth agreed. “I think you can make it, just keep talking and being honest with each other and I reckon you’ll be fine,” she smiled at him. “Have you seriously thought about emancipation then?”
“Oh yes.” He chuckled then. “I never revealed who it was, or where I knew her from, but I sort of told my parents I knew someone overage who I liked a lot. They quizzed me to make sure it was entirely two sided and then they were the ones who came up with the emancipation idea, as well as telling me blatantly that they would sign the document allowing me to marry.” He blushed and grinned at her.
“Wow, so a lot of thought then,” Elizabeth grinned as he blushed. “Sounds like you’ve got really supportive parents.”
“I do. I’m lucky. I live on my own already, and have since just before my seventeenth birthday. They helped me look for work, and I do a lot on my own. So.. yeah. I’m very lucky.” He smiled slowly. “Between that, and Barbara, I may just be the luckiest man alive.”
“I’d reckon you are,” Elizabeth smiled. “So, you work? What do you do and where?” she asked, trying not to make it sound like an interview, she was just curious.
“I am a gopher-slash-helping hand-slash-unit assistant for a television studio, and over at [studio name]. I also tutor students at my school after school a few days a week, and on the weekends, I volunteer at Urdnot Ranch as a paperwork monkey.” He grinned at her. He was a workaholic, yes.
“Sounds like you’re a busy boy, how do you fit in time to see Barbara?” Elizabeth joked. “Which school do you attend? And tutoring? That’s not always easy, any specific subjects?”
“We have a schedule. We see each other one night a week to eat and read together.” He smiled at her. “And I attend Creekside High, for a few more months. “ He chuckled. “I enjoy tutoring. And I do it in English, Maths, and History, mostly.”
Elizabeth raised an eyebrow as she smiled at that. Of course they had a schedule, she thought to herself. “What are your plans for after school then? College? Work?”
“College. I start in January, and keep going. I’m going to become a therapist, to help other people like I’ve been helped.” He smiled to her. “And to keep working until I get to the point where I can work as a therapist also.”
“I think you’d be really good at that,” Elizabeth smiled as she watched him. He had a good air about him, made you feel comfortable to talk to him. “I must say, you are very mature, I can see why you and Barbara get on so well,” she told him.
“Thank you. I’ve been working toward living my own life for a couple of years. My family is a big one and I needed to have the ability to move out of it. My parents have been very supportive, and so has Wrex Urdnot, over at Urdnot ranch and so many others, including Barbara.” he grinned at her.
“Well it certainly sounds like your hard work is paying off,” Elizabeth told him. “I’ve not heard of Wrex Urdnot, who is he? I assume he is a rancher?” she asked curiously.
“He runs the Urdnot Ranch, a shelter for teens and a place where teens who have had hard times can learn, live, and recover, like drug addicts, and ones who have come through criminal backgrounds, and other rough backgrounds. It’s a non-profit group who help people.”
“Ah, sounds like a really great project,” Elizabeth nodded thoughtfully. “I’ll have to look into it, Wrex Urdnot you said?” she asked, pulling out her phone to type a memo into it.
“That’s him, yes.” He grinned at her. ” Its a good cause.” Maybe he had found someone else to help? Yay! “What do you do, when not meeting strange people in libraries?”
“I teach languages and conflict resolution at Irvine University,” Elizabeth replied easily. “I also work part-time for the UN as a negotiator, but that’s more in the capacity of a consultant,” she told him.
“Really? Cool! Sounds like an awesome set of jobs! I’ll make sure to take your classes!” He liked the sound of those. “Which languages do you teach? “ He knew Egyptian, Greek, and Latin, because of the dreams, but that was all.
“Uhh...Russian and French primarily, but I can work through Italian and Spanish because of the French and also Japanese and German to a degree, but I’m still working on that, it all helps in the UN,” Elizabeth told him with a smile. “I’d be more than happy to see you there Billy. I’m spending a bit more time in the office lately since they asked me to run the department, but I make sure to take as many lessons as I can,” she said. “Are you interested in languages then? Or is it conflict resolution?”
"Conflict resolution. Though I'll need to take some languages. " He grinned.
“Excellent,” Elizabeth grinned happily. “Well, I’m not going anywhere, so anytime you’d like to talk about it, try a lesson or just look around, let me know and I’d be happy to help you out,” she told him, pulling out a business card from her handbag and handing it over to him.
He took her card and grinned. “Thank you!~ I’ll definitely be in touch.” He glanced at his watch and sighed. “And Now I have to go. Got to go to volunteer work.” He grinned at her. “You take care of yourself, okay?”
“Anytime, Billy,” Elizabeth smiled at him. “You are a busy boy, don’t let me stop you,” she chuckled. “Will do, Billy, same to you, don’t be a stranger,” she smiled kindly. She liked him, he was a good kid and from the sounds of it, he and Barbara were going to be together for a long time. She’s have to invite them over for dinner sometime.
