Tink invited herself over to Tom’s mechanic shop. She arrived on her bike, climbed off, ditched her helmet and leather jacket, and headed inside. It was warm, though there was a promising breeze, set to bring in fall.
“Tom? You around?” She asked, and gave a grin or two to a couple of the other guys working in the garage. She wanted to talk to her friend about her Vegas Halloween Trip idea, and was bouncing a bit in her step.
At the sound of her voice, Tom emerged from inside the hood of a truck and waved her over. Normally they didn’t allow non-employees back there, but everyone at the shop knew Tink and she knew her way around all this. He tossed his rag aside with a grin.
“And to what do I owe this pleasure?”
“Halloweeeeeeeen,” Tink said, nearly dancing as she crossed her way with grace and skill through the cars and the engine pieces toward her friend. “Halloween in Reno! It’s the new Vegas, did you hear?” She asked, grinning.
“Halloween in Reno, eh?” He leaned back against the counter, looking amused. “Sounds like a fun time. You and your boyfriend are going, then?”
“Oh yeah, I’m sure he’s going. But everyone should go, you know.” Tink said, giving him a bright grin. She turned to hop up onto the counter near where he was leaning, and picked up a wrench or whatever tool was laying nearby. “It’s going to be an amazing time. They have a zombie walk.”
“Everywhere has a zombie walk,” he pointed out, laughing. Tom took the wrench from her and set it on the other side of him. “I’d have to chat with Sybil, I guess. She’s not exactly old enough to do Reno and I’m not really sure if she’d had anything set in her mind for Halloween.”
Tink scoffed, playfully. Then she stuck her tongue out at him. “Smart ass.” Then there was a beat, and both of Tink’s eyebrows raised. “...not old enough to do Reno?”
“It’s my Irish charm,” he shot back, giving her a wink. Then his own eyebrows raised as a smile played on his lips. “Yes. We’ve talked about this, remember? How she’s eighteen? Anyway, we had a good chat and we decided we may as well give it a go. I still feel a bit strange about it, to be honest, but I’m happy with her.”
That’s right, Tink thought, nodding. The nearly-jailbait. But she was grinning none the less. “Oh, that’s wonderful! So long as you’re happy. And it’s not illegal.” She added, playfully. “Well, that’s a bummer. I mean, she’s not old enough for a Reno casino… maybe we could find one in state, then. Or… just something else fun to do?”
“Definitely not illegal.” He laughed, but he sounded relieved. “But, please don’t change your plans or anything. Reno sounds like an amazing time, you go have fun and bring me back plenty of pictures.”
“Okay.” Tink said, grinning. “I won’t change anything. But maybe supplement? We can do something in addition to my original Reno plans, yeah?” She’d like to meet Tom’s girl sometime.
“I don’t see why not. When are you going to Reno, exactly?” There were plenty of Halloween-related things going on in the OC. They could easily schedule something, he was sure.
“Uh… around Halloween? I haven’t bought tickets or anything. Thinking maybe we might drive? It can’t be that far. I’ve never been before.” Tink said, giving a gentle shrug of her shoulders.
Tom laughed. There was something endearing about Tink’s tendency to be last minute with things. “Well, will you let me know when you do end up going?”
“I will. I’ll text you. And if you want to find some under-21 friendly activities for your girlfriend, we can work that out, too!” She said, still grinning her playful grin.
“I really would like you to meet her, you know,” Tom said, giving Tink a grin in return. “I’ll see what I can do.”
Tink beamed. “Okay! Text me, would you? And try to figure out about Reno. They’ve got… what, Circus Circus out there?” She grinned, then turned to head out. “Oh, and we’re gonna win that canned food drive contest.”
“Yeah, I’ll let you know. I’d like to go down if I could.” And then he snorted, starting to shoo her toward the door. “Not on your life. Now get out of here if you’re going to be talking like that.”
Tink laughed on her way out. “We’ll see, my friend!” She said, then turned once she was outside, gave him a wave, and then hopped off to her bike.
