What: Elphaba brings Huan to get checked out
Rating/Warning: G
Status: Complete
Elphaba’s day was turning out very strange. She’d started out the day leaving home with no pets and then arrived home to find a dog the size of a small pony who could talk in her front room. When she’d pushed the front door open, she’d done so cautiously, not knowing how the animal was going to react to her, but after a brief grumble and a sniff, he seemed to accept her. Lúthien’s plan of presenting the dog with her clothing and hence her scent seemed to have worked. Elphaba had talked to him very gently for a little while, showed him the collar and lead she had bought on the way home and explained why he needed to wear it, that she needed to take him to the vet and the law said he needed to be on a lead. If the animal could talk, then she could only assume it could understand what she was saying in return.
On the car journey, she chatted to him like she would if a person were in the car with her, about her day, where they were going and the like. When they arrived, she asked him to jump out of the back of her car and follow her into the surgery then checked them in at reception before sitting to wait their turn.
Jessie couldn’t be any happier with the way her practice was going, she had busy days and people seemed happy with the service she provided. Some had been wary at first, she was young and had purple/pink hair so didn’t exactly look like your average vet but they soon realised she knew what she was talking about and wasn’t afraid to get stuck in. In fact it had been the most fun she’d had in a while checking over the animals at a nearby ranch.
Checking her computer she stuck her head out of her office, “Miss Thropp and Huan?” she called.
Elphaba looked up from stroking Huan’s head at the sound of them being called. She smiled and led him into the room with the vet. “Hi, I’m Elphaba Thropp,” she greeted, holding her hand out to shake the vet’s. “And this is Huan,” she looked down at the dog.
“I thought it might be that way round” Jessie grinned as she shook Elphaba’s hand, “So it’s just a general check today right? He’s a new pet?” she asked as she bent down to pat the dog.
“Sorry,” Elphaba blushed a little at that. “Yeah, my fianceé text me today that I would find him when I got home. I’m not sure what breed he is or where he came from, but I said I’d bring him in for a check-up and some shots,” she told her.
Jessie shook her head in a ‘don’t worry about it’ look, “He’s incredible. A form of wolfhound would be my guess” she said, stroking her hands over the dogs fur and checking him over in a casual but confident way.
“You must be a good person,” Elphaba commented. “Lúthien told me that he would only growl or attack you if you were a bad person,” she said with a shrug, anticipating the puzzled look the vet was bound to give her.
Instead Jessie looked up with a smile, “Dogs are more sensitive than people realise” she said, before removing the stethoscope from around her neck and listening to the dogs heart. “Initially he looks healthy and strong. I’ll take some bloods and just give a couple of general boosters. Then if the blood work shows anything else is needed I’ll let you know” she advised.
“Thanks, that would be great,” Elphaba nodded, stroking Huan’s head before kneeling down next to him and telling him what was going to happen so it didn’t come as a shock.
Jessie smiled at Elphaba and her eccentricities as she went to prepare the needles and injections. It was sweet that she cared so much about a dog she had really only just met, she was obviously going to be a good pet owner.
“It’ll only sting a little bit. Is that ok?” Elphaba asked Huan while the vet busied herself with prepping the needles and vials. “Remember, one bark for yes, two for no,” she added before he could try to speak. He barked once and Elphaba smiled at him and scratched him behind the ears.
“Pretty well trained already” Jessie commented as she listened to Elphaba talk to the dog, “Have you had a dog before?” she asked, as she finished prepping and moved to administer the first injection. Stroking the dog calmingly as she swiftly injected him at the back of his neck.
“No, never actually,” Elphaba replied as she stroked Huan under the chin as he gave a little whine as the needle went into his neck. “Father always thought pets would detract from studying and my sister was always a bit...demanding for attention,” she shrugged. “Well done Huan, nearly done,” she told him.
“Oh that’s such a shame”Jessie said, “I think every child should have a pet, it teaches them responsibility and means they’re never really alone” she said with a smile as she patted Huan, “She’s right nearly done. Just a little bit of blood to take now. Can you lay down for me? Lay down” she instructed.
“It’s ok, Huan,” Elphaba smiled at him, patting her hand on the floor. He seemed to give them both a wary look, but after a final look at Elphaba he lay down on his side for her. “Thank you,” she told him, stroking her hand down his side while the vet sorted out the equipment to take some blood. “I’m sorry, I don’t think I caught your name,” she said as she looked at the woman.
“Thank you” she said to both the dog and Elphaba, “Oh call me Jessie” she wasn’t the sort to insist on being called by her title and liked being more casual with her clients. She took the blood quickly and then patted the dog, “Good boy” she said before standing to retrieve a couple of treats. “Is he allowed these? They’re all natural and healthy of course”
“Uh...yeah, sure,” Elphaba shrugged as she put her hand under the dog’s head to help him sit upright again. “I mean, you’re the vet,” she joked. “I’m not entirely sure where to start with looking after him to be honest. I got one of those big dog beds and some bedding for him to sleep on, the collar and lead and a few of the more heavy duty toys, but I held off on getting food for him. Figured I’d ask you first if that’s ok?”
“Of course, that’s what I’m here for” she smiled, “Sounds like you’re doing well so far. Food wise I’d recommend a dry complete dog food, since he’s new to you it’s best not to bring in wet food straight away in case it upsets his tummy” she advised before fetching the list of recommended dog food brands for Elphaba.
“That’s great, thank you so much,” Elphaba smiled gratefully. “So should I make an appointment for the test results or should I wait for a phone call?”
“Oh, I’ll give you a call. No point in bringing you back in if you don’t really need to” Jessie said kindly, “”And if you need anything else please let me know. I’m afraid I don’t have a website yet, I’m hopeless with that kind of thing, I should find somebody really”
“I think I could help with that if you’d like,” Elphaba stood up as Huan followed suit. “I have a young girl working for me on a project whose very good with computers and websites. I can put you in contact with her if you like?” she suggested.
"Oh really?" Jessie smiled brightly, "That would be great if you're sure she wouldn't mind. I'm at a complete loss. Brought a book to do it myself and didn't understand a word, and that was just page 1" she half joked.
“Well I can only say I’ll talk to her about it, then she can decide if she has the time and whatnot,” Elphaba smiled. “Here’s my business card,” Elphaba fished into her handbag for a card to hand over. “If you give me your details I can pass them on to her,” she told her.
"Absolutely" Jessie agreed as she took the card, "Thank you it's very nice of you" She picked up one of her own cards from the computer table in the corner and handed it to Elphaba. "She can call me anytime"
“That’s alright,” Elphaba smiled, slipping the card into her handbag. “We’re all just trying to get by and I’m sure Alice will be happy for the experience,” she told her, her hand naturally dropping onto Huan’s head to stroke it.
“Everybody has been so nice since I got here. I mean I found a place to stay with a lovely guy who’s becoming a great friend, I found this place and was able to get it sorted in record time, I met my childhood best friend again, I’m so happy I made the move here” Jessie gushed before blushing, “Sorry, you didn’t need to hear that” she laughed in embarrassment.
Elphaba chuckled at that. “That’s ok, it’s nice to hear the nice things that happen around here,” she told Jessie with a smile. “It’s easy to just hear the bad, so please, keep on grinning,” she laughed.
“Oh I usually do” Jessie told her, “Perpetually happy, that’s me. It takes a lot to get me down really, there’s almost always a way of looking at things in a brighter way”
“The OC definitely needs more of that,” Elphaba smiled at her. “Right, I shouldn’t keep you, I’m sure you have other appointments. I’ll talk to Alice for you and see what she says,” she smiled at the vet with a little nod.
“I do but thank you” Jessie said, “For choosing my practice and for passing on my details” she said as she showed Elphaba and Huan out.
“Your welcome,” Elphaba smiled as she headed for the door. “And not to worry, like I said I can only see what she says about it, but hopefully she’ll be able to help you out,” she turned to shake Jessie’s hand. “Thanks for your help, I’ll go pick up the food you recommended and I’ll tell Lúthien that we’ll keep bringing Huan here. Can’t see her having a problem with, can you, Huan?” she looked down to ask the dog who barked once in reply, making her grin.
Jessie laughed and scratched the dog behind the ears, “Thank you Huan” she said smiling at the dog, “Even if she can give me some suggestions it’d be great. I’ll contact you with the blood results as soon as they’re back” she added shaking Elphaba’s hand, “It was lovely to meet you, both of you” she added.
“Likewise,” Elphaba smiled at her. “Come on Huan,” she encouraged as she moved toward the receptionist to pay the bill. Today was a good day and she felt she and Huan had made some real progress. Hopefully Alice would be able to help Jessie out, she was a nice woman who was just starting out with her business and there was nothing wrong with supporting local businesses.
