It had been a long week. With lots of revelations and Elphaba just needed to talk it all over with someone. Elphaba heaved a heavy sigh as she knocked on Glinda’s front door, with the wine bottle in hand she waited for Glinda to answer the door.
Glinda was worried about Elphaba, ever since she had gotten the text from her friend the day before she had worried. She hoped Luthien hadn’t hurt or upset her again, Glinda might just have to have a word with the other woman herself if she had. Because it was not acceptable.
She had ordered them food from the local chinese delivery place, quite a lot of food - everything Glinda knew Elphie liked - and was now waiting for that and her friend to arrive.
Making her way to the door she gave Elphaba a bright smile and ushered her in, “It’s good to see you” she said honestly as she hugged the taller woman.
“Hi,” Elphaba greeted, patting the smaller girl on the back as she hugged her. “You ok?” she asked, stepping back from the embrace. “I brought this, hope that’s ok,” she held out the bottle of wine to Glinda.
“I’m fine” Glinda smiled as she shut the door, “Of course it’s okay, it’s perfect. I ordered us chinese” she beamed before taking the wine bottle from Elphie and going to fetch glasses, “Now, how are you?” she asked.
“Great! I love Chinese,” Elphaba followed her into the kitchen, watching her fetch the glasses as she leant on the counter. “I’m ok I guess, had a bit of a...trying week,” she told her quietly.
“I thought so” Glinda smiled, happy she’d been correct. Grabbing the glasses quickly she opened the wine, “Come on, living room so you can tell me all about it” she insisted. Pouring her friend a glass and handing it to her before pouring her own and settling down on the couch before looking at her expectantly.
Elphaba accepted the glass in her hand and followed Glinda a little numbly. She wasn’t used to ‘girl talk’ as she looked at Glinda settled expectantly on the couch. Sighing, she gave a little shrug and joined her on the couch, sitting with her head lying on the back of it as she looked up at the ceiling. “Lúthien...Lúthien told me something yesterday that...well I don’t know what I feel about it really,” she told her friend.
Glinda tucked her feet under her as she sat sideways facing Elphaba on the couch, her head resting against the back of it. “Okay, tell me what it is and we’ll try and work you through it” she offered.
Elphaba sighed and closed her eyes, deciding just to say it. "Lúthien has a son," she said.
Of all the things that had been running through Glinda’s head and that she thought she would say that had actually not been considered. “Oh” she said, mouth open, “Umm well that’s...different”
Elphaba gave a stifled laugh and rolled her head to look at Glinda. “Yeah, he’s two. Her father has custody of him because he thought she didn’t have ‘control over herself’,” Elphaba told her. “I’m not sure marrying me is going to help on that front, but he should be with his mother,” she said, gazing off into the distance. “I told her I’d help her get him back.”
“Oh Elphie” Glinda said, “Have you thought about it before? Being a mother I mean?” she asked gently.
“No,” Elphaba gave a short laugh. “No, I’d never even considered it, I just...it’s the right thing to do,” she sighed, taking a drink from her wine before relaxing into the couch. “I have to admit, everything’s been kind of a rush…” she said absently.
“The right thing in a moral sense possibly” Glinda nodded, “But that doesn’t mean it’s the right thing for you or you and Luthien. You need to think about this before rushing into anything.”
“But I love her,” Elphaba said. “And I want to be with her. I mean, what difference can he really make to us? Our lives?”
“I know you do” Glinda said, “He’ll completely change your lives. You really haven’t been around children much have you?” Having volunteered at the children’s ward in the hospital and wanting to be a teacher Glinda had spoken to a lot of parents and children. It was one area she was surprisingly confident in.
“Only if we let it, surely,” Elphaba asked, perhaps a little naively. “I mean, I looked out for Nessa when we were growing up because we weren’t far apart age-wise, but my brother was born when we were in school so I never really felt as protective over him. I always got the feeling that Father never really trusted me with taking care of them in a more...hands on way,” she shrugged. “It doesn’t matter anyway, I can’t turn back now,” she sighed as she sat forward on the couch. “I told Lúthien I’d help her because she’s in a more stable situation which is what her dad seemed to want,” she looked down into her glass and took a swig of it.
Glinda was usually the naive one but this time it seemed that Elphaba was taking that title, or purposefully burying her head in the sand. Glinda wasn’t sure which. “You’re going to become his step mother Elphaba, it won’t be like taking care of a sister who is a few years younger than you” she said softly, “I’m not saying turn back but you need to talk about this and understand exactly what it means for both of you”
“When she told me she looked...unsure of herself,” Elphaba mused. “It was...natural to just, step up and...I don’t know, be the strong one I guess,” she sighed. “I mean...could you...imagine me? As a...mom?” she asked quietly, keeping her eyes fixed on the bottom of her glass.
“This is why you need to talk to each other” Glinda nodded, “Oh Elphie, I think you’d be a wonderful mother” she patted Elphaba’s hand, “I can’t imagine you not succeeding at anything you put your mind to. You’re the most determined woman I know”
“Thanks,” Elphaba gave a little laugh. “I think the only thing I could teach him is how to count,” she replied, still unsure of her own worthiness. “What can I say to her though? She needs her son back and I want to be a part of her life,” she shrugged, feeling that her mind was muddled whenever it came to the topic, running round and round in circles.
"You will teach him how to be a damn good person" she nodded, before softening, "You tell her exactly that" Glinda said, "She isn't gonna be no expert either honey. You'll have to learn together and support each other"
Elphaba paused for a little bit. “With Aunt Glinda?” she asked quietly.
Glinda took one of Elphaba's hands between both of hers, "Absolutely with Aunt Glinda" she nodded, voice wavering slightly touched as she was by Elphaba's question.
“Thanks, it means a lot to know I have a friend like you behind me,” Elphaba squeezed her hand as she smiled across at Glinda.
"Always, theres no getting rid of me now" she smiled, before she could day anything else there was a knock at the door,"That'll be the food" Glinda said standing up,"Could you grab cutlery?" she asked Elphaba.
“Yeah, sure,” Elphaba nodded, putting her wine down on the coffee table before heading to the kitchen, pulling out plates, knives and forks from various cupboards while Glinda took care of the food. She leaned her hands on the counter and hung her head between her shoulders as she took a few deep breaths.
Entering the kitchen Glinda placed the food down on the side and rubbed her hand up and down Elphaba’s back, “You aren’t alone” she said softly, “I promise you that”
“I know, it’s just...I’ve never really had anyone on my side before,” Elphaba smiled at her.
“Well get used to it girl” Glinda said, “I’ll always be on your side, that what best friends are there for after all”
Elphaba laughed at that. “Ok bestie, let’s get this food dished out,” she turned round and eyed the food bag hungrily.
