Jessie was feeding the ferrets when she heard movement in the kitchen, thinking it was Gin she picked up Clyde and headed inside with him perched happily along her shoulders. Upon entering the kitchen she realised she had forgotten Gin had a friend staying over for a while, she’d gotten a text but hadn’t been here when the woman had arrived.
“Hi” she said with a smile, announcing her presence, “You must be Rogue right?” she asked before moving closer and holding out her hand, “I’m Jessie”
Rogue was making food. The smells were pretty divine oddly enough. She tilted her head then smiled at the woman. "Hello! " she replied.
She dried her hand on her jeans and took Jessie's. "Ah am and its a pleasure ta meetcha." She smiled. "And who is this? " she gestured to the ferret.
“Pleased to meet you too. I have to say you’re putting my cooking to shame, it smells amazing in here” she grinned, before holding her arm in front of her for the animal to run down and sit looking at Rogue interestedly, “This is Clyde, you’ll meet Bonnie soon, once she’s finished eating” The ferrets were quite at home scampering around the place now.
“Sorry ah like havin’ a space ta cook in. It’s rather nice. Ah grew up on a farm ya see.” she smiled a bit as she set her spatula down and smiled at Clyde. “Why hello there, Clyde, ain’t you a handsome little fella?” she grinned a bit. “Ferrets, ah’ve never really had much experience with them. Ain’t popular critters back home.”
“Oh don’t apologise” Jessie smiled, “Maybe I’ll learn a thing or two by watching you. I’m not a very good cook beyond a couple of dishes that I can do well”
She stroked Clyde’s head with her free hand, “These guys are easy to get along with. They’re more domesticated than they should be really, I spoil them a little”
She laughed softly. “If’n you wanna learn southern cooking, ah can teach you what ah know. Momma made sure ah could cook, so ah’d be desirable.” she rolled her eyes. “but ah kept the skills anyways.” she grinned.
“Nothin’ wrong with spoiling. Ah spoiled my chickens back home, they got all kinds of treats and spoiling, so ah understand!”
“Really? You don’t mind? That would be great” Jessie said, “I’d love to surprise my friend James with a great new dish” She laughed as Rogue rolled her eyes, “My mum soon gave up any hope with me. I was always much more interested in climbing trees and getting mucky than learning any desirable skills”
She smiled indulgently as she let Clyde move back to lay across her shoulders, “I’ve spent all day at work with him hanging off me before” she admitted, “Oh chickens, how brilliant. I’ve never kept chickens before but they’ve got so much personality”
“Ah don’t mind, no.” she laughed a bit. “Ah can certainly teach you a few dishes if you’d like.” she smiled softly. “Ah did that too. Ah grew up on a farm, with chickens and cows and the like. So ah got down and muddy all the time.” she smiled. “Momma tried to make sure ah could have some desirable skills.”
Rogue smiled again and started work on her meal. “Chickens are pretty awesome. Ah won’t lie. They’re interesting to say the least.”
“Sounds like a smart lady” Jessie said with a smile, “And it certainly works in my benefit if you think you can teach me” she added chuckling.
“I’ve treated some, as part of my training and they’ve always been entertaining” she agreed.
“She was sometimes. Ah don’t know. She’s pretty much disowned me now for runnin’ from home and trying my hand at living out here.” she shrugged a bit. “Ah don’t mind teaching. More people who love good Southern food the better!”
“Oh? What do you do?” she asked curiously.
“Oh Rogue, I’m sorry. I didn’t realise” she apologised, “Well I definitely appreciate it, even if I end up being a bit rubbish at actually making it myself”
She smiled, “I’m a veterinarian. Just opened up my own practice out here” she was proud of that, and determined to make a good go of it.
"Don't be. Its okay really. Ah'm sure we can get you cooking. Don't fret none" She smiled sweetly.
"Oh! How lovely! " She said with an honest smile. "You doing okay thus far? "
Jessie smiled in response, she liked this girl, she had a ‘can do’ attitude and seemed pretty positive in general.
“Everything is going well yeah” she nodded, “I have a good number of clients signed up already. My work nightmare was being open and nobody coming in but I had people from the very first day”
Rogue was pretty good at faking it until she made it. It was the only way for someone like her to survive. So yes, she totally had a can-do attitude. She never thought of herself like that but she really was.
“Ah’m glad to hear it! Ah’’d bring my pets if’n ah had any. But after the whole attack of the plants thing, ah’m wary about anything that’s not humanoid.” she laughed softly. “ah’m glad you have things going so well!”
Jessie laughed too, “I think that’s understandable” she replied, “Luckily plenty of people do have them, enough to keep me occupied anyway”
She laughed softly. “Pets are no shortage here!” she smiled a bit. “Ah’m sorry if ah threw off the house dynamic by hanging out here for a day or so. Ah just… had some Dreams that rendered me incapable of spending the time with mah actual housemate”
“That’s very true. Thankfully for me” Jessie grinned, “Oh not at all. It’s nice to have someone else around. Gin’s a great guy for helping people out. Sorry to hear you’re having some trouble. Seems like a lot of people have dream issues”
“Ah yeah, lots o’trouble here. Ah don’t like these dreams none but ah guess ah just need to accept em. It’s not really the dreams that’s the problem. It’s the random side effects that every now and then crop up.” she smiled a bit.
Jessie nodded, “I’ve not had any yet but I’ve been informed I most likely will. You had bad side effects?” she asked in concern.
“A few yeah, ah’ve got a spotty power thing going on.” she shrugged a bit as she grabbed the food off the stove and plated it, having made more than enough she made one up for Jessie, too.
“Oh wow, that must take some getting used to” Jessie commented, thanking Rogue when she realised she had made a plate for her too. It looked great.
She made a gumbo with rice and some potatoes. Nothing fancy, of course, just good old comfort food. “Enjoy hun. And yeah, if’n it’d work constantly or not at all it’d be easier.”
“Thank you, it looks delicious” Jessie said, “What kind of power do you have?”
She dug into her plate before looking up at her and sighing softly. “If’n ah touch people, bad things happen. Ah don’t know much about it yet but … ah basically steal energy, memories… and stuff”
“Oh Rogue, I’m sorry” Jessie said when she’d swallowed her mouthful of food, “That sounds like a bit of a sucky power”
“Don’t worry bout it. Apparently ah’m pretty badass, so as long as that’s the truth, ah’ll take it. Sucky power or not.” although her face showed a form of misery at the mere thought of never being able to touch anyone. There goes her love life. Damn it.
Jessie looked a little sad for her but nodded, “I’m sure you’ll be a badass” she said encouragingly.
“Like ah said, don’t worry none. Ah’ll be fine either way.” she shrugged lightly. “Life likes ta throw curveballs. Jes gotta know how to hit em, yah?”
“Yep, hit em as best you can or at least move out of the way so they don’t smack you one” Jessie grinned, enjoying Rogue’s company as she ate the tasty food she’d made.
