Anna loved the first day of school, and the days leading up to it. It was the one time of year she really liked to go shopping. New clothes, new school supplies. It was a ritual she and her mom had always had the week before school began. Her mom didn’t make a lot of money, but that was okay. She’d never been much of a material girl, and so she usually only found one or two new items of clothing to wear. She’d rather spend the money on new notebooks and pens and highlighters, anyway. She’d managed to keep her backpack from last year in tact, which was sort of a miracle considering how many books she tended to haul around. She didn’t have a laptop or an iPad or any of the fancy technology that a lot of students had, but she didn’t mind, either. Sure, those things would be nice, but her desktop computer worked just fine when she needed it. Plus she knew her mom eventually wanted to move into a bigger house than the one they were in, so Anna didn’t like asking her to spend her hard-earned money on frivolous things. She made her way down the hall after stopping at her locker. Technically it was lunch hour, but Anna wasn’t all that hungry. And she was on a bit of a mission. She wasn’t involved in any after school activities, and her mom kept hinting it would be a good idea and maybe a way to make new friends. Or friends at all. It was a department Anna was severely lacking in. So she’d looked over the schedule of activities until her eyes had landed on two that seemed like they might be a good fit for her: yearbook and tutoring. She knocked lightly on the guidance counselor’s office door, lingering in the doorway and shifting her weight from one foot to the other as she waited. Being back at work was a nice change of pace. It wasn't to say that it wasn't hard. The death of Jenna’s sister and her brother-in-law wasn't something that would be quick or easy to get over. Being back in the office was a nice distraction. By focusing on her students, her mind wasn't drifting back to that. It also gave her a break from thinking about and worrying about Jeremy, too. Especially after what just happened long ago. Getting kicked out of Magic Mountain. It wasn't so much that she was angry that he did get kicked out of the establishment but more so that she didn't know what to do. She wasn't Miranda. All she could think was that she was failing him. And her sister. The knock at the door pulled her attention from her paperwork. "Come in!" Jenna called, scooping up the papers spread out over her desk and sticking them back in the folder she pulled them from. Anna opened the door hesitantly, peeking her head just inside and smiling at the red-headed woman. She knew what her name was, of course, but she’d never actually spoken with her. She’d never had reason to. She did well in school and stayed out of trouble. Had she been a trouble maker, or if she’d been failing classes, she knew it would have been mandatory for her to meet with Mrs. Saltzman. “Hi. I’m Anna,” she greeted her, her voice upbeat despite her nervousness. She was discovering that it was much easier to talk to people online than it was in person. In person she always felt like she was a big dork and people were just waiting for her to say something cheesy or lame. Even teachers, though all of her teachers had always liked her. She wondered if all high schoolers felt like that. ”It’s nice to meet you Anna,” Jenna greeted, giving her a friendly smile. “I’m Mrs. Saltzman,” she introduced seeing as Anna wasn’t a face she could place in her memory. She did have a lot going on inside her head but she still didn’t think Anna was someone who had been down to her office before. “Please sit down,” she said, gesturing to the two empty chairs positioned in front of her desk. She stood up and placed the folder in her filing cabinet behind her. She sat down in her chair, giving all of her attention to Anna. “What can I do for you today?” she asked. Anna nodded, smiling at her. “Nice to meet you, too,” she said, taking the offered seat. Now that she was seated and face to face with the other woman, she couldn’t help but feeling a little nervous. She found herself really wanting Mrs. Saltzman to like her. And adults almost always liked her. It was people her own age that she generally had a hard time being one on one with. “I wanted to know how to sign up to be part of the peer tutoring program.” She tugged subconsciously on the zipper to her bookbag. Anna had nothing to be nervous about! She might not know it, but Jenna was far from intimidating. Or at least she thought so. Especially to her students. Well, except a couple of the mouthy ones. She enjoyed intimidating them. "It's really easy. I promise," she said, giving Anna a warm smile. She opened up the bottom draw on the right side of the desk and pushed through folders until she got to the one that contained the applications. She pulled it out and handed to Anna. "You just fill this out and we'll review it and pair you with someone based on the subjects they are in need of tutoring with the subjects you excel in." Anna Jenna |
