Jem usually did his homework in his room so that he wouldn’t have books and papers strewn all over Jubilee and Laura’s coffee table or kitchen table, but tonight he’d gotten the urge for a late night snack while he did his work and had brought his books and notebooks out into the kitchen and had then spaced out on the table while he looked for something to eat. He was enjoying his time in America and in California, especially, because it meant getting to spend time with his cousin who he had spoken to, but barely seen while growing up. He especially liked that there always seemed to be snacks in the house, so now it was simply a matter of figuring out what he wanted to eat.
“Hey.” Jubilee peeked into the kitchen and grinned. “Whatcha up to? Bored? Tell me you’re bored, yo.” She had a glint in her eyes like she was up to mischief and mayhem.
Jem hadn’t realized that anyone else was up, but then again, it wasn’t exactly that late, so it shouldn’t have been such a big surprise to see his cousin. Closing the cabinet, Jem turned to face her, “I was going to attempt some home work,” he gestured towards the books on the table, “And find a snack, but did you have something else in mind?” Aside from the fact that it was fairly easy to tell that Jem was at least part Chinese, most people probably wouldn’t think that he and Jubilee were related, what with his English accent and her American one.
“Fun. I had fun in mind. You’ll have all the time in the world to study. But it’s time to have fun.” She grabbed his hand.
“Alright. I suppose I can put my work off for a little while.” It wasn’t as if it was due the next day or anything, Jem just liked getting a head start on his work so that he didn’t have to worry about it, “What sort of fun exactly? It’s not anything that’ll get us in trouble, is it?” A small smirk crossed his lips. He didn’t think his cousin would do anything to get them in trouble, but it was always a good idea to double check.
“Don’t worry.” She grinned at him. “It’s only a little trouble…”
Jem quirked a brow at her, but didn’t want to seem like a party pooper, so he decided to go along with it. Of course, he did hope that she wasn’t taking him to a club or anything, because he knew for a fact that he would be extremely awkward in that setting, “Alright. Do I need to change or anything?” He was wearing the clothes he’d worn to class that day, jeans and a short sleeved button up shirt.
“MMmmmm.. NOPE. How come you’re called Jem. That’s like this old cartoon in the 80s but I think it’s coming back and man I used to watch that as a kid and that shoulda told me I might like girls….” Jubilee continued her run on sentence. “Get your shoes on we gotta go and have some fun!”
“It’s just something my mother started calling me when I was little and it stuck. Hardly anyway, aside from teachers, calls me James anymore,” There were a few people who still called him James, but for the most part it was Jem. He was amused by Jubilee’s quick changes in topics. “Alright. Give me a moment.” Leaving his books on the table, Jem went into his room where Church was lounging across his bed and barely paid him any mind as he put his shoes on then went back out to join his cousin, “Alright. I’m ready.”
“TO THE JUBILEE MOBILE!” She grabbed his hand and yanked him outside and down the driveway. She was a madwoman on a mad mission!
Jem laughed at her enthusiasm as he was pulled a long and once they reached the car, he waited for her to unlock the door then got inside and buckled his seatbelt, “You’re not going to tell me where we’re going, are you?” He glanced over at his cousin once he was settled.
“Nope. Surprise.” She started the car and floored it, peeling out and making a beeline for her destination.
“I do hope it’s a good surprise.” Jem’s eyes widened slightly and he reached for something to hold on to as Jubilee floored it. That had certainly been a surprise, “Of course, I hope I don’t die of a heart attack before then as well.”
“Pfft, I’ll just give you CPR and then you can be all ‘EEW GROSS YOU KISSED ME’ or some shiz hey do you have a girlfriend?” She looked over at him.
Jem shook his head in response to her question, “No, I don’t.” And he never had. He’d had friends who were girls, a few that he’d thought were cute, but he’d never actually moved past being friends. He’d had a hard enough time making friends as it was.
“OKay we totes have to fix that!” She started to bounce in her chair. “I know a couple girls, unless you like boys then I know some of those too!”
“Do you like to think of yourself as a matchmaker?” Jem asked, cheeks flushing ever so slightly. No one had ever actually asked him outright if he liked boys before, but he figured that if he could tell anybody, it’d be Jubilee, “And I’m bisexual actually.” It was a little strange to say out loud, but it also felt good to tell someone.
“Yeah. I totally match make.” Jubilee nodded her head. “Me too, see we have something in common!” She just kind of wish she’d known if she was before she’d become a vampire. It kind of nagged at her that the power shift had been what caused it, or if she had been to begin with.
“Aside from being family of course.” Jem smiled as he glanced over at Jubilee, “Do your parents know about your sexuality?” Jem had never told his parents, because he wasn’t sure how his mother would react.
“They’re dead.” Jubilee patted his arm. She hadn’t expected him to know that. “Was a home invasion like 5 years ago. Made me miss Beijing, which sucked. Man, if I’d gotten a gold in China that woulda kicked ass!” It was better than thinking about her parents.
Now that Jubilee said it, Jem vaguely recalled his mother saying something, but five years ago Jem had been in the middle of high school and trying to work through his own problems and with everything that had gone along with the move to America, it must have slipped his mind, “I’m sorry. Mum never talks about it, so I’d forgotten.” Now he felt bad for bringing it up, “That would have been nice, but you still won last year.”
“Yeah...they were there though. I know it.” She gave him a smile. She’s worked through the worst of it and while she was sad sometimes, she was okay. Life had turned out okay.
Jem smiled and nodded, “I’m sure that wherever they are, they are very proud of you,” He didn’t know what he’d do without his parents, but one thing he did know that they’d always be with him in someway if anything ever did happen to them. After a moment or two, he glanced out the window then back at Jubilee, “So, are we almost there?” He was extremely curious as to where they were going.
“YEP.” She peeled off the road, and went bumpadity bumpadity down a rough alleyway, parking outside a really noisy sounding club.
Jem glanced out the window as they parked outside the club then turned back to Jubilee, “I’m not so sure I’ll fit in here.” He wasn’t going to say no to going in and it wouldn’t be his first time at a club, but the ones he’d gone to in England weren’t quite so out there as the one they were currently sitting outside of. “Although, I have a feeling that, that is exactly the reason you brought me here.” It didn’t take a genius to see that Jubilee liked getting people to do things that were outside of their normal comfort zone.
“You need to let loose, learn to relax.” She patted his leg. “Maybe you’ll meet someone, maybe you won’t, but at least get out there and shake your booootaaaay!”
Jem didn’t think he’d actually meet anyone tonight, but he would try his best to have some fun. After all, he’d spent the majority of his time, since moving to America, in school, so we could use a little bit of fun, “Alright then. Lets go.”
“Boootaaay!” Jubilee cried out, dragging him towards the club and then inside like she was a VIP.
