Felicity checked the gym name and address one more time before putting her phone away in her gym bag and walking into the reception area. She checked the clock on the wall once more, she’d arrived on time, so decided to sit on the bench against the wall and wait for Isabelle to arrive.
Izzy jogged from the bus stop to the gym, she wasn’t late but she always liked to be early however the girl taking over for her shift had been a little late which meant she’d had to catch the next bus.
Entering the gym she noticed the nervous looking somewhat nerdy girl and smiled, “Felicity?” she asked as she approached her.
“H...hi…” Felicity stood up and reached out a hand to shake hands with the other girl. “Izzy, right?”
“Yep, that’s me” she nodded, “Good to see you” she said shaking the offered hand, “I hope you haven’t been waiting long”
“Not at all,” Felicity replied with a quirk of a smile. She had to admit that she was quite nervous about this, violence made her nervous, but she figured that learning some self-defence would serve a two-fold purpose: help her get over her nerves about violence and protect herself if the worst happened. “I only got here about a minute ago, so...yeah...” she smiled and gave a little shrug.
“That’s good” she smiled, “So are you all ready to learn to kick ass?” she grinned as she led the way into a smaller room which she had reserved earlier. Luckily she had discovered the gym soon after moving here and they were great about letting her use the space.
“Oh well, I don’t know about that,” Felicity told her nervously. “I’m more of a...take them down using their server and a few lines of coding kind of a gal,” she joked. “But I’d like to know how to at least, y’know, defend myself,” she smiled at Izzy as they arrived in the room.
“I’m not even going to pretend to know what anything about coding or servers, I can turn my computer on and search on google. That’s all I need to know” Izzy grinned, “You however will be able to do all that and kick ass, or ‘defend yourself’ however you want to phrase it”
“Ok,” Felicity laughed, feeling a little more at ease about the whole thing. Izzy was nice and friendly, but confident and it inspired a confidence in her. “Where do we start?” she asked, putting her bag to one side of the room.
“Right, so you’ve had no training at all before right?” she waited for the confirmation from Felicity before taking her through some basic defence moves.
“No, nothing, complete blank slate here,” Felicity laughed, watching in shock and almost horror as Izzy demonstrated some moves. “I can’t do that,” Felicity shook her head. “I’m no where near strong enough!”
“Of course you are” Izzy said, “It’s about how you use the strength not how much of it you have” Moving closer she set up Felicity’s stance, “Okay, now when I come at you...” she continued to talk and show Felicity the moves in slow motion, walking her through everything carefully.
“You make it look so easy,” Felicity told her when they took a break for a drink of water. She was breathing hard, unused to so much exercise.
“Thanks” Izzy grinned, slightly out of breath but still full of energy, “I’ve been training more recently, since my dreams. But you’re doing well”
“Oh thanks, but we both know that’s not true,” Felicity joked. “What sort of dreams have you been having then? Lots of ass kicking?” she joked.
“I wouldn’t lie, you are doing well considering you’ve never done anything like this before” Izzy insisted, “Actually pretty much yes. I’m a shadowhunter which basically means I protect the world from demons and monsters. Kind of anyway”
“Demons and monsters? Yeah, you’d need to be pretty kick ass to do that,” Felicity smiled. “I’ve seen Buffy! You’d need to be all ninja,” she joked awkwardly, making fairly lame ninja-like movements with her hands.
Izzy laughed, “Do you want to see something cool that I got from my dreams?” she asked, somewhat excitedly.
"Sure!" Felicity liked to see cool stuff. "Unless its a demon, in which case I'll pass," she added, a little wary.
“No demons” Izzy promised as she retrieved her whip from her bag, placing her empty water bottle on the floor on the other side of the room she let the whip unravel before flicking it expertly and bringing the bottle to her. Grinning she turned to Felicity with a little, “How cool is that!?”
"That is wicked cool!" Felicity grinned, clasping her hands together in delight. "Do it again!"
Izzy laughed, “Sure” she said and repeated her demonstration. “I use it to capture demons, it’s incredibly strong” she informed Felicity, “Would you like to try?” she offered.
"Really?" Felicity asked, even as she stepped forward. "That would be awesome, I've never held a whip before," she told Izzy.
“Sure” Izzy said, moving closer and handing Felicity the whip, “Like this” she said, wrapping her hand around her new friends to show her how to hold it, “You get more movement that way”
“It’s heavier than I thought it would be,” Felicity observed. “Can I try and...crack it? Is that the word?”
“Yeah, just...here” she stood behind Felicity and with her hands on the other woman’s hips turned her, “Now make sure you twist your wrist this way...” she wrapped hand around Felicity’s and demonstrated, “...I don’t want you hitting yourself with it because it stings like a bitch” she laughed before stepping away and gesturing for Felicity to try.
Felicity cast a worried look over her shoulder at Izzy before raising her arm and flinging the whip forward. It didn’t crack, but it flew forward and went away from the both of them, so Felicity counted it as a mild success. “How was that?” she asked cautiously.
“Better than letting go of it or hitting yourself” Izzy told her, “Okay together once then you can try again” She stepped right in behind Felicity took her hand in hers and cracked the whip, “Feel that movement?” she asked with a grin, “Try it again”
“Ok…” Felicity repositioned her feet in the way Izzy had shown her and threw the whip out again, faster, this time it gave a little crack. Felicity looked up at Izzy and smiled.
Izzy clapped and gave Felicity a grin, “Well done” she praised, “That was great”
“Thanks,” Felicity smiled, handing the whip back to Izzy and holding her wrist while moving her hand. “Think I need to be stronger to do that properly,” she remarked.
“It takes some work” Izzy agreed, “But you did well. We’ll stick to normal defence moves to begin with though and work up to the whip”
“Thanks for letting me have a go,” Felicity stepped to the side of the room and took a few gulps from her bottle of water. “So, what’s the plan then?”
"You're welcome" Izzy said easily, "Two training sessions a week for a month then up it to three and see how you're doing?" she suggested.
"Wow, ok," Felicity sighed. "I think I've got the stamina for that," she laughed.
“Your stamina will build up quickly, I promise” Izzy grinned, “Don’t worry I’ll go easy on you to start with”
Felicity smiled at Izzy, still a little unsure if she would ever be able to defend herself adequately. She much preferred a computer to her fists, but a computer wouldn't stop a purse snatcher or worse. "Thank you Izzy, I know I'm not the easiest of pupils to teach," she joked.
“Nonsense” Izzy replied with a shrug and an easy smile, “You’re going to be great. You just need more confidence in yourself”
“Yeah,” Felicity replied. “I’m not exactly an Amazon,” she joked. “Have to work up to being beefed up I guess.”
“It’s not all about muscles you know” Izzy told her, “I mean do I look particularly muscular to you?” she asked with one eyebrow raising. She was toned it was true but otherwise looked like a normal slim girl.
Felicity shrugged. “Not really, but I mean, you just look…” she gestured vaguely at Izzy. “Strong, y’know? I look…nerdy,” she tried to explain.
“You do” Izzy agreed before hastening to add, “Not in a bad way, I mean you’re cute too. Nobody will expect you to pull ninja moves on them but you will do. You’ll have the element of surprise”
“Ah so Master,” Felicity put on a Chinese accent and bowed slightly with her hands together. “We learn Praying Mantis? I surprise dem reeeeeal good.”
Izzy looked at Felicity for a moment before laughing long and hard, “You have much to learn young padawan” she replied before frowning, “Okay totally mixing genres but you gotta give me some credit for trying right?”
“I give you extra credit for it being sci-fi!” Felicity laughed, holding her hand up for a high-five.
Izzy high-fived her back with a grin, “Excellent, extra credit. See you can teach me stuff too”
"Yeah, like text speak and sci fi," Felicity joked. "Not exactly practical skills but they get me by," she grinned.
“Maybe not practical but fun. I have to admit I’ve never actually seen Star Wars - I can only quote it because my younger brother does all the time” she told Felicity.
“Cool! We should do a movie marathon!” Felicity suggested excitedly. “Except the first three coz…” she made an unsure, unsatisfied noise and wrinkled her nose. “Well…” she held her hands up like it was obvious.
“Okay, that sounds like fun” Izzy agreed, “You can educate me in film and I can educate you in ass kicking” she laughed, “Oh, they aren’t good? Wait those are the new ones right? The first three?”
“Yeah, those three,” Felicity smiled. “I think you’ve picked up more from your brother than you give yourself credit for,” she laughed. “So anything else for this session? Or can I go buy myself a large hot chocolate with marshmallows and a flake to recover?”
“I just remember being really confused that 4, 5 and 6 were made before 1, 2 and 3” Izzy said, frowning in concentration as she remembered a conversation with her brother. “Nope we’re done until next session. And you can buy yourself a skinny latte with cinnamon” she winked to show she was joking.
“Aww...no flake?” Felicity pouted as she teased.
“Maybe half of one, since you’ve done so well” Izzy teased back.
Felicity laughed at that. She liked Izzy, it felt like they were going to be fast friends.
