Billy carried his precious cargo in a backpack on top of the other items he was carrying. He carefully walked up to Barbara’s door and knocked with one hand, his other inside the bag, cradling his cargo. He had found it just this morning and it was not sick, or hurt, but it was very tiny. He hoped Barbara had some ideas...
Barbara had been checking the business pages on the paper when the knock came, standing she moved to answer the door.
“Billy, come in, come in” she smiled brightly, “How are you today?”
"Hi, Barbara. Pretty good. And with a new friend..." He stepped in and bent the top of his backpack so that the new kitten was revealed. He was tiny and a reddish-brown color.
"Oh my goodness" Barbara said as she looked at the tiny thing, "Aren't you a cutie?" she reached out a hand and stroked the kitten gently with her finger.
Billy grinned as the kitty grabbed for her finger and nibbled on it with sharp, but small teeth, softly. “He’s a cutie, and a nice little guy. I rescued him, then got him looked over at the SPCA, and adopted him, all this morning. Kind of completely undid my schedule for the day and threw it out of whack, but… he’s an awesome little guy.” He nodded at Barbara.
Barbara laughed as the kitten nibbled on her finger before looking at Billy, “Well he’s very well suited to his new owner then isn’t he” she said smiling, “He’s a very lucky little kitten”
Billy stuck out his tongue at her and grinned. “I was hoping you might know more about kittens and what I should be doing, and give me a hand this evening.” He offered her his lopsided grin.
“Well I’m no expert but that’s what the internet and enthusiasm is for right?” she smiled, “I will, of course, help you out”
“Thanks, Barbara. I appreciate it, a lot.” He nodded. Life was weird and busy, but she made it better. “Say hello, Buster.” The Kitty meowed plaintively and batted at one of her fingers.
“You’re more than welcome” Barbara told him, “I’m excited, I’ve always felt bad having a pet with the hours I work so helping you with yours will be fun” she giggled as Buster batted her fingers, “And he’s so cute”
Billy smiled at her and his eyes danced. “Well. I do like to see you excited. And thanks, Barbara. I knew I could count on you.” He kissed her cheek, and smiled gratefully. She really was awesome.
Barbara gave him a look at the cheeky comment but then blushed and couldn’t help smiling at his kiss, “Come on trouble” she said, “Let’s see what this little cutie needs”
“Sounds good to me.” He followed her inward, cradling his pack and the cat inside, and the kitten peered around a little, before looking up at him and mew-ing in what was definitely a questioning tone. “This is Barbara, and she’s a good kitty also. This is her place.”
It was absolutely a questioning tone, “A good kitty?” she laughed, “I suppose there are worse things I could be called” she said entering the dining room where her laptop was set up.
“Yes. With a cute nose, and a cute tail, and cute eyes.” He grinned, all innocent expression. He followed her and grinned as he settled the kitty down carefully, so he could come out and explore if he wanted.
She didn’t believe that innocent look for a moment, but found it was cute enough that she didn’t mind. She was fond of him and his tendency to say naughty and inappropriate things. Smiling as she watched the kitten for a moment she then turned to the computer and brought up the search engine. “So, kittens” she said tapping the keys.
“Yes.” He moved to her side, one arm close to hers, companionably so, and watched the kitten peer around and stumble over things. He grinned, feeling warm toward the little guy.
It wasn’t just the kitten which was distracting now, but Barbara focused on the internet search, “Okay so, litter tray and litter, kitten food, food bowl, water bowl, a bed and some toys” she looked up at Billy.
“Okay. Looks like I need to go shopping. Wanna come with?” He waggled his eyebrows at her.
“Absolutely. I need to go crazy in the cat toy aisle” she joked, though in truth she probably would.
Billy laughed, then turned to the little kitten. “Ready to see a new place, little guy? Soon we’ll have all sorts of fun things for you!” The kitty came to his hand and snuggled in when he was lifted. Billy smiled softly.
Barbara smiled warmly as she watched, it was probably one of the sweetest things she’d ever seen - Billy and the little kitten.
Billy grinned as he looked up at her, eyes dancing, and he knew he had come to the right place. With Barbara, he always did. This little guy didn’t know it, but he had joined an interesting life, and now he had two people who would care for him.
