“So, ah, I need to ask a favor.” Nate was laying on the large mattress he had transported to the observation rooms, and staring up at the stars, one hand joined with one of Cora’s. That simple contact, and the contact between their minds, well, that was nice.
But he did have a purpose other than just enjoying her presence and training her telepathy for inviting her up.
“Okay,” Cora said, rubbing his knuckles with her thumb. She really enjoyed their little vacations, even if they were sort of working vacations. She didn’t mind the homework, either. “What is it?”
“I’ve been looking, using Professor and my powers, to locate my once and AU future son. And… I found the timeline he is in, and I am planning to send a team to invite him back to this time, to live, if he wants. And I want to send the best people I know, the ones I can trust most, to protect him and escort him here, if he wants to come.” His head turned to her. “So I’m asking you if you will go, and help bring him here.”
Cora thought about it for a minute, sucking on her bottom lip. Relationships were complicated, but considering her parents, that was pretty normal. “You’re sending a team--not going along? What can I do?”
“I can’t. Greymalkin is not the same in this universe as she was in the dream universe. I have to basically be the one at the center of the machine, holding it together. So I’m sending the best team I know.” And he smiled to her. “You’re telepathic, and you have spidery powers, and I trust you.” He smiled wryly. John has agreed if you like to give you a crash course in how to use your powers, before you go, then help you more when you come back
“Okay.” It was a big mission, she knew, but if Nate thought she could handle it, then she believed him. And she trusted him to make sure the machine worked properly. “How soon do I need to be ready?”
Nate gaped, then rolled over to hug her. “Thank you. “Probably November first, so a few weeks yet.Thank you, Cora.” He kissed her cheek, and smiled. “Amazing woman.”
“You’re welcome.” She hugged him back, curling up close. She didn’t see a reason not to honor a request from a friend, least of all, this one. “Are you nervous? About seeing your son again if he decides to come back?”
He snuggled her close, and patted her back. “Very much so. And explaining that I’m not with his mom, and why, and about you, as well.” He kissed her nose. “You are important in my life, and I want you to be seen as such by everyone.”
Cora nodded, reaching up to trace Nate’s jaw with her fingertips. “But I know they’re important, too, even if things are different now. And I care about what’s important to you.” She smiled softly, and kissed his chin. “I just hope he doesn’t hate me.”
“Thank you. He’ll have to learn, and he will, over time. “ He hugged her close, just enjoying that. For now, that was enough.
