Katniss hated starting new schools. She wasn’t particularly good at making friends or toeing the line really, so she always felt like an outsider. Swinging her bag off from her shoulder, she sat down in the outside eating area and took out her packed lunch and a text book. Sitting cross-legged and munching on a sandwich, she didn’t notice the girl approach her.
Pansy was on school grounds on official Red Planet Inc business. She was supposed to have a meeting with one of the teachers, but that was after lunch. Damn. So Pansy had pretty much nothing to do during the lunch period. She moved over to a shady area, pulled out her cell phone, and sat down to fiddle with it.
Surprised the girl had sat beside her, Katniss paused in eating her sandwich to look around in surprise. Seeing no-one else coming to join them, she swallowed her mouthful of food and spoke to her. “Umm...hi, can I help you?”
“Hmm?” Pansy looked up from her phone at the sound of the voice, and turned around to look. She broke into a smile when she saw the girl, and shook her head. “No, just… trying to waste a little time.” She said, shrugging her shoulders. “Didn’t bring a lunch today.”
“Oh,” Katniss looked down at her lunchbox. “I’ve got a spare sandwich if you’d like,” she offered, holding out the box to the girl. “Nothing exciting really, tuna mayo.”
Pansy looked torn for a moment, glancing from her phone to the girl with the sandwich, then broke into a grin and scooted closer. “I’m Pansy.” She said, then accepted the sandwich.
"Katniss," she introduced, handing the sandwich over. She pulled out a packet of crisps and opened them, putting them down on the ground between them "Help yourself," she offered her a quirk of a smile. "So what brings you to this fine establishment?"
“Hi, Katniss.” Pansy said, breaking into a little grin. “...that’s an interesting name. Sounds like catnip.” She said, then bit into the sandwich. “Oh, I’m going to deliver some funds to a teacher from Red Planet Inc, that’s the company I work for.” It didn’t bother her that her mouth was full. She talked anyway.
Katniss laughed a little at that. "Yeah, guess it does,"she smiled at the girl. "Red Planet Inc? Never heard of them, what do they do?"
“It’s… kind of hard to explain.” Pansy said, then swallowed another bite. “We give grants to people who are doing good work. That’s one of our many jobs, anyway. And that’s what I’m doing here today. One of the teachers at this school is getting a surprise from Red Planet Inc.”
"Really?" Katniss asked surprised, it was probably because she was a student but she didn't see much beyond the homework and tellings off. "Who is it then? What sort of good deeds have they done?" she asked. "I'll share my orange with you..." she implied with a smile.
“Uhhh..” Pansy pulled a piece of paper out of her pocket, unfolded it, and read off the teacher’s name. “Apparently, in her free time, she helps run a no kill animal shelter not far from here.”
“Cool,” Katniss remarked. “Never would have pegged her for that,” she shrugged, taking a bite from her sandwich. “How’d you get involved with that then?”
“My boss actually found me. It’s interesting. He must have been following my schooling career, because it’s my first real job, you know? I just decided not to go back to college. I like my work with Red Planet. I’m gonna get my PI license, too.” Pansy said. At least her job was going well, even if her home life had fallen apart.
"PI license? What's that?" Katniss asked, holding her hand to her mouth as she spoke around her mouthful of sandwich.
“Oh, Private Investigator.” Pansy said, then took a big bite from her sandwich before going on. “It’s a pretty good job, I think. And I get to do some pretty good stuff, you know?”
"Cool," Katniss nodded thoughtfully. "So you'd go through people's trash and that sort of thing?"
“Oh, no, it’s more like… following people around in cars with long range cameras, researching birth certificates, death certificates, … actually a lot of it is really boring,” Pansy said, grinning, then reached for some chips. “Thanks for sharing your lunch with me. Why do you bring so much food?”
"That sounds pretty cool!" Katniss told her. "I don't know..." she looked down at her food and shrugged. "I'm a growing girl?" she joked lamely.
Pansy laughed. “Well, I’m sorry that I’ve taken half of your lunch away.”
“That’s ok,” Katniss shrugged a little at that. “Don’t want to grow too much, especially not in the wrong direction,” she told her with a little smile.
Pansy grinned. That was a good one. She nodded once. “Good luck with that. I’m still working on it.” Her look said ‘obviously.’ The bell rang.
"It's a battle we all must fight," Katniss said dramatically. "I go running in the park once or twice a week if you'd like to join me?" she suggested, packing away the leftover rubbish.
“Yeah.” Pansy said, climbing up to her feet and holding a hand out to help up her new friend. “Katniss who goes running in the park. Hey, here’s my card.” She pulled out one of her business cards and held it out for Katniss to take. “Call me. Or text. I know how you kids these days love to text,” she said, teasing.
Katniss accepted the hand and got to her feet, leaning down to pick up her lunch bag. “Thanks,” she took the card from the girl. “And what if I choose to write you a letter? I’m not exactly your typical type of kid,” she teased back with a grin.
“Hey, letters work, too. Just make sure your handwriting is legible, young lady.” Pansy said, waggling a playful finger and wearing a grin. “Now rush off. Don’t let me make you late for class.”
Katniss glared at her playfully and batted her hand away while sticking her tongue out before scooping her backpack up and onto her shoulder and jogging off to class.
