Del sat with her legs dangling in the water of the duck pond watching them snooze a little while she pouted. The moon was pretty, though, and the sky was kinda clear. Sorta. As clear as it ever got in the city. She wondered when her new internet friend would show up. Des thought she should stop doing that because maybe one of those people might hurt her one day and her sister-brother didn’t really trust Del’s decision making skills but...but nothing had happened yet and Del was really good at reading people.
If you couldn’t get excited over finger fireworks and platypuses and tell someone they weren’t poisonous, you weren’t worth knowing. This mister man was worth knowing. AND apparently he owned a candy shop.
"I didn't have any bread." Gabe had no problem meeting random people on the internet -- then again, he hadn't really done it ever before now. So first time was a charm, he supposed? She wasn't hard to spot, sitting in the designated spot chosen (by the ducks, duh), and even in the mostly dark area, her hair was bright. "Do you think ducks eat cinnamon rolls?" He had some of those.
“Shhhh,” she said looking up at him, finger to her lips. “The little ones just went to sleep.” He was cuter than she thought he’d be. She just wanted to braid his hair. Maybe put some bows in it. He might like that too.
Gabe's mouth went into a little circle of an "o" and he rose his eyebrows, but he didn't say anything after being shushed -- only plopped himself down on to the spot next to her and squinted over at the little sleeping ducks. They were cute. But apparently not too enthused over the idea of cinnamon rolls, which was a bit sad.
He offered his new lady-friend one instead.
Del took it happily. People kept bringing her baked goods. It was the actual best. “The ducks on the outside of the circle sleep with half their brains awake so that the ones on the inside can sleep with all of them asleep.” She took a bite of the cinnamon roll and her eyes went wide as she looked at her new friend. “This is amaaaaaaaazing.” It was still just as enthused in a whisper. “Did you make these? Or did my sister give them to you?”
Was that true? Or was she just making things up? It sounded pretty cool either way. And if Gabe had to be honest, he'd seen and heard some crazier shit already today, so. So. He smiled, wide and a little lopsided in a way that made his eyes go small and squinty. "I made 'em, yeah. I dunno your sister that I'm aware of. She as cute as you?"
He was shameless and also aware of that fact.
“Deryn’s way cuter than me. She’s tiny and happy and she’s dating a biiiiiiiig tree hobbit.” She smiled back at him and booped his nose. “When you smile it makes your eyes go all sparkly.” She liked that. She liked him. Del wondered what his name was, but it seemed kinda silly to ask. Maybe she would give him a new name. She’d have to think about that.
She wouldn't really need to worry about asking, because he was so charmed he couldn't help himself blurting out more words than he'd really thought he might have for the night. "Gabriel," he said. "That's me. What's your name? Deryn's a no-go if she's dating an Ent. I've never been one for climbing."
He paused, looking over at the ducks who were half brained sleeping or whatever that was. "Let's go find a slide."
“I’m Del,” she said and decided that holding Gabe’s hand was a good idea and she wasn’t done with her cinnamon roll yet. “Climbing’s fun. I like it. You can see a lot of new things from up high. I wonder if tall people feel like that when they lie down? Or maybe when they climb things.” It was a thought worth having.
"Howdy, Del," Gabe offered another sparkly smile and squished her hand a bit before pulling out another cinnamon roll and munching on it himself. She was adorable, like, seriously, and he found himself more awed than charming.
"Ive never been tall, so I really couldn't say. It is pretty cool when I try jumping to see over crowds, though."
“Do you do it all springy sproingy like a terrier?” Del asked, twisting to give him her full attention. “Oh! OH! Can you show me how to make candy? I wanna make a dress, but my sister-brother won’t let me near the stove.” It was sad, but Des was probably right and Del would set something on fire just by forgetting it was there.
He did kinda jump all sproingy like that sometimes, and he more often than not got looks for it. Aren't you a bit old for that? Those kind of looks. And well, so what, so long as everyone was having fun, right?
At the question, Gabe rose his eyebrows up and twisted his mouth to the side, half a smile. "Sure, kiddo, I can teach you. What kind of candy?"
“Dunno yet. I have to finish designing it.” Del chewed on her lower lip a little and then got up abruptly. She bent and booped Gabriel right on the nose. “You’re it!” What? They were in a park. Tag was totally required. And then she went running off, laughing.
And yeah, okay, she was all over the place as far as conversation went, but Gabe decided that he didn't mind at all. It was a rare day people could keep up with his levels of enthusiasm and energy so if anything this was a bit of a relief. He shouldn't have been surprised considering all those capslocks.
So he did what any hyperactive nearly forty year old guy would in a situation with a totally hot and attractive probably twenty something year old. He got the fuck up and chased after her because tag was awesome.
Del let him catch her. Not right away of course, because that would be boring, but once they were in the shelter of a particularly frightening grove of trees. The ducks could have the cinnamon rolls in the morning when they woke up.
Slightly breathless after all the running (what? He wasn't exactly a runner), Gabe leaned against a tree, hands on his knees. His tennis shoes had gone all scuffed and dirty and he decided it was a pretty good look for them.
"You know," he said, glancing around at the trees and then back at her (such cool hair!), "You're pretty alright."
“No, no,” Del said, shaking her head. “You were supposed to catch me and we were gonna spin around and then we’d look into each other’s eyes and then you’d kiss me and it’d be magical like in the movies and maybe there would be a city exploding in the background, but I hope not because that would be messy and probably dangerous and I’d worry about people.”
"I musta missed that page of the script," Gabe said, all kinds of contrite before he stood up straight and offered a grin. "Do we have to take it from the top, or can we just start over with the spin-y bit?" Yeah, he could get behind the idea of kissing her, no problem at all.
Del made a bit of a show of thinking it all over very seriously. “Hmmmmm.” And then she grinned brightly at him. “We can start over with the spinny bit.”
"Perfect," he said a little relieved, because tag was fun but, man, his sides kinda burned from all the effort. It was possible he needed to exercise a bit more. Maybe.
Devious, he snatched her hand and then pulled her closer only to spin her around with a little bend before stealing a kiss. Clark Gable could suck a dick, this was how it was done.
Oh they were dancing now! Del loved dancing! Well, she thought she loved dancing. Maybe she didn’t so much. It was very hard to know sometimes. Things changed so often. She kissed him back and decided that this was very much enough like the movies to make her happy. “I like you, Gabby. You’re a big cuddly teddy bear.” And she very much didn’t mind being bent over backwards like this.
"You're pretty swell too, Lady." Gabby? Hey, why the hell not? He'd certainly been called worse, much less endearing things. He grinned and then straightened them both back up in a way that was practically bouncy. He was just kind of bouncy, so really it made sense.
She straightened her layers and looked very, very curiously at him for a moment. “We should do this again sometime.”
Gabe smiled, all crooked with an arched eyebrow. "Kiss? Or hang out? Because I could do both. That'd be okay." Anyway, he had to teach her how to make candy still. So there was that. "We should," he went on because sometimes talking was just something he had to keep doing.
“Both, duh,” Del replied, laughing with him. “Silly goose.”
"Okay." And really, that's that, right? Okay is okay, and he's for it. She's for it. Why not? Speaking of why nots, Gabe doesn't see a reason not to just kiss her again. They both taste like cinnamon rolls and candy and something else entirely and it's sort of hard to resist.
Del kissed him back. A lot of times, she had trouble focusing on things, would jump from one thought to the next before she’d even finished the one she’d been on a dozen thoughts ago. It was easier when there was contact to focus on. Gabriel was sweet and soft like his cinnamon rolls, just the right amount of doughy too. So the laughter ebbed away only to be replaced by a soft noise of approval and a hand at her new friend’s waist.
“You’re good at this,” she said quietly against his mouth, teasing fondly. “But maybe we shouldn’t be doing this on the path.” She stole another kiss, lingering a little too long before she pulled away again.
He was pretty good at this, it was just a natural gift really. He laughed and it was more a giggle than anything full throated right up until the point that Del pulled away. Then he just gave her a thoughtfully wistful look and nodded. No need to rush anything. Not like they hadn't agreed to hang out again.
He stuffed his hands into his pockets and offered a lopsided smile. "Yeah. And it's kinda late. I've gotta get up and… you know. Work tomorrow. So."
Del took another kiss because she could and because he was cute and she really, really liked kisses. “I’ll find your store.” A pause and then very seriously she changed it to, “I’ll try to find your store.”
"It's not --" He frowned, but not an angry or confused one, just -- a little frown -- before pulling out his wallet and producing a business card for her. "Address is on there. And hours. You'll find it."
“I’m not very good at finding things,” Del confessed quietly. “I’m much better at losing them.” But she took the card anyway and put it in with her other important things.
"It takes all sorts, kiddo." The urge to kiss her again was pretty strong so he did it, but it was chaste, simple. "You'll find it. And then I'll teach you how to make candy. You good getting' home?"
“Yep!” She said, grinning at him and pointing confidently in the direction she needed to go. “I’ll see you soon, Gabby!” And if she got lost, she would find him on the net and he could come get her. Right? Right.
Absolutely right. "Laters, lady," he said, mouth twisting up into yet another smile (he was never lacking for them), before wiggling his fingers in a wave and wandering off in the other direction.
Definitely an interesting day.
