She was too silent. The Normandy. Even with the hum of the drives, the ship was too quiet. Gone was the chatter and the banter, missing was the hectic orders. Shepard walked through her ship and felt as though ghosts were sitting on her shoulders.
The main guns needed calibration, but Garrus wasn’t there. The sickbay was empty, and she thought of drinking with Dr. Chakwas. Joker didn’t man the pilot’s seat and EDI wasn’t next to him. She couldn’t find Kasumi in the lounge, or Samara in observation. The engine room was empty of Tali and the other crew members, Grunt and Javik, Zaeed and Wrex all missing from the cargo holds. She couldn’t ask Wrex to leave his ranch.
Shepard missed Vega calling her Lola, and the light flirting with Traynor. She missed Cortez. Miranda wasn’t berating her from her office, and Thane wasn’t there with wise words. There wasn't Mordin to discuss findings with, or Jacob to talk weapons. Jack wasn't there to smoke with. Anderson wasn't there to have a shoulder, and Liara...God, Liara.
She found herself standing in front of the wall. Dozens of names of those lost to the Reapers. She pressed her hand to their names. Ashley and Anderson, Mordin and Legion. So many. Too many ghosts for her shoulders.
