Who: Gendry and Myrcella
When: Sunday 13th October
Where: Cafe
What: Getting to know you
Rating/Warning: Low/None
Status: In progress

Myrcella got off the bus not far from the cafe where she had arranged to meet Gendry. She was excited yet nervous to talk properly to her recently discovered half-brother. She was glad he'd agreed to meet up with her, it had been a shock to both of them to see each other but Myrcella had come around to the idea of a half-brother since then and with her mum back in the UK with her other siblings it seemed an opportune time to get to know each other.

Entering the cafe she looked around to see if Gendry was there yet or if she should get a table for them.

As it was, Gendry arrived just seconds behind Myrcella. It was still surreal to him, to have family he'd never had before, the most recent discovery being Myrcella; he wondered who else might pop out of the wood work. A cousin perhaps? Another sibling? Maybe even his father? It seemed the closer he got to his father, the further away he actually was.

When he saw Myrcella, he paused for a moment. She didn't look anything like him, or anything like Renly, no matter how hard he looked. She definitely took after her mother, then, and Gendry at least knew just what Myrcella's mother looked like.

He walked up beside her. "Hi," he greeted. "Been waiting long?" Well, that was fucking lame, wasn't it?

Myrcella had always been told that she and her brothers took after her mums side of the family so Gendry must have taken after their dads side, at least that was her theory. But she hadn't dwelled on it for long. She had moved on to the excited part of the revelation, especially now that she didn't have to worry about her mum.

"Hi" she smiled brightly, "Nope I actually just got here. How are you?" she asked kindly.

Like her mother, Myrcella was beautiful, but she also seemed kind, warm, and gentle. Gendry found this to be curious and his head tilted just slightly to one side. If he were single and she was not his sister, he might have been attracted to her, in some other lifetime.

"Er-" Gendry started. How was he? It wasn't a simple question to answer, but his reply was as cliche as could be. "M'fine," he answered, his gaze shifting from Myrcella to the chalkboard menu as if he cared what was written on it. "You?"

"I'm okay" Myrcella told him, paying him more attention that she had before when they'd first met. "It's all still a bit weird isn't it?" she said with a wry smile, "I mean, better now the shock has won off but still strange to think you're my brother"

Something about the way she said it, that she laid claim on him as her brother, made the doubts begin to melt slowly away. Gendry's lips turned up a little.

"Yeah," he said. "I'm your brother." Which meant Myrcella was his sister, something he wasn't sure he could say just yet. He'd always been an only child and having any blood family at all was still wholly new to him. "Let your brother buy you lunch?"

"I think I can do that" she grinned at him, happy he'd said he was her brother, "You already have this brother thing down" she told him warmly. It was maybe easier for her to accept, since she wasn't an only child and welcomed the idea of having a nicer older brother.

"Is it that easy?" Gendry asked as they approached the counter. Cafe food confused him, most especially American cafe food. There was nothing Scottish about the menu, nothing even remotely recognizable to Gendry.

"I just have to buy you things to be good at it?" he teased. After a moment, he asked, "What do you do anyway? Do you go to school? Work?"

Myrcella laughed, "Hmmm there is a little more to it but buying lunch definitely helps" she teased back.

"I'm in my last year at Creekside High School, then I go to college. It took some adjusting when I came over because I was all set to start college back in the UK but it's not so bad" she shrugged. "What about you?"

Gendry pulled a bit of a face. The American education system was a little strange to him. By sixteen, people should have already started college in the UK, but here, they were treated like children and made to continue attending school.

Before Gendry could answer, he had to order. He let Myrcella order first, then ordered a plain black coffee for himself. "I have a ship repair business," he answered. "Well, it's not really mine, it's my parents', but I run it here."

It was strange to Myrcella too but she was resigned to it now and at least she had been able to make friends. Good friends. And it was only another year, less really, until she would begin her college course.

"Really?" she said after they had ordered, "That's really cool. So do you sail too?" she asked inquisitively.

Gendry shook his head, no. "Sailing is for drunks and people in white uniforms," he said. "I do man ships and boats whenever I need to." She shouldn't have asked anything about his job, because now he wasn't going to stop talking about it. "Mostly I just work on them, though, so people can sail them."

She laughed, "I'll keep that in mind" she nodded with a grin, "So, like the ships that race in the Olympics? Those kinds are the ones you work on?" she asked, finding it interesting.

"Sometimes," Gendry answered. Their orders came to the counter. Gendry paid for the both of them, then gestured toward a table to make sure it would suit Myrcella to have a seat at. The coffee was warm and smelled like every other American coffee Gendry had smelled.

"We mostly get in commercial liners," he explained further, "but we take any vessel that needs work. We also build them. That's what I'm hoping to do in the future, just build."

Myrcella had ordered nachos which she would no doubt need Gendry to help her with anyway since it seemed to be a large bowl and a juice, she set everything on the table and took her seat.

"Oh okay I see" she said, in understanding, taking a sip of her juice, "You can build them from total scratch?" she asked, eyes widening, "You mean like with huge machines and stuff right? Because it'd take ages to do it by hand, wouldn't it?"

"Some things are best done by hand still, but we do use big machines," Gendry said with a chuckle. He sat down and opened two small containers of cream that he'd grabbed from the bar. There were packets of sugar that he opened as well. He stirred both into his coffee.

"What do you want to do after school?" he asked. The small talk felt awkward, but that was what you were supposed to do as a big brother, wasn't it? Take an interest and all that.

Myrcella thought that was pretty cool though, making a whole boat was impressive. She'd been terrible at woodwork and things like that when she was in school back home.

"I'm going to train to be a beauty therapist" she told him, taking a sip of her drink, "Pretty girly I know but I really like that kind of thing so..." she shrugged. It may not be the most amazing job in the world but it was something she wanted to do.

What exactly a beauty therapist did, Gendry had no clue, but it sounded like something that would be right up Myrcella's alley. They were very different people, Myrcella and Gendry, but then again, they were raised very differently, too.

"As long as you enjoy it, that's what matters," he said encouragingly. "How do you like living with the Starks?"

If he had asked she'd have happily described all of the different treatments a beauty therapist provided like manicures, massages, facials and the like. And Myrcella was also interested in learning how to cut hair too.

"I think so, no good doing something you hate if you're gonna need to do it for years right?" she smiled. "Oh it's cool. I like that Arya and me can hang out more. Ned and Catelyn are really nice"

Gendry took a swallow of his coffee, not even tasting it, his eyes on Myrcella. He brought the mug back down and tapped a finger against it, shifting a little uncomfortably in his chair. "This is still really weird to me," he admitted.

It wasn't made much better by the thought of his girlfriend sharing the same space as his sister. It only made him think of his dreams again and how young Arya was in them, and whenever he thought about that, he only felt like a pedophile.

"I'm sorry" Myrcella said automatically, "I guess I'm just excited at having a nice older brother" she admitted, "I forget how strange it must be to you. And you weren't really given a choice about telling me since I turned up out of the blue" She felt bad that she had, unknowingly. backed him into a corner when she'd gone to her Uncle's house that day.

He couldn't say that he was as excited as Myrcella was. For Gendry, it just presented more confusion and more frustration. She had a better outlook, he guessed.

Still, Gendry shook his head. "Don't be sorry, I don't mind," he said. After a moment, he asked, "How's your dad?" Robert Baratheon wasn't Gendry's dad. The man who'd raised him was his dad and he was certain that he'd never call his actual father by that name.

Myrcella always tended to see the good in a situation and while her dad may have been a rubbish absent father for Gendry she was determined to be a good little sister.

"He's okay" she shrugged, "I mostly talk to mum. Dad works a lot but he did email me last week just to catch up a bit" It wasn't unusual for Myrcella not to see her dad for a while so she had to admit she didn't miss him as much as she missed her mum or as much as she probably should. He wasn't a bad father he was just busy.

What a shocker. It seemed Robert Baratheon was a bit of a stranger to the children he actually did know about. This wasn't to say he was a horrible father, just absent. Gendry didn't know which was worse.

"Do you think I should ever, you know, tell him about me?" Gendry asked, his fingers tapping against the mug, nervous. He didn't know how else to present the question, but Myrcella at least knew the man a little better than he did.

Thanks to her mum, Uncles and grandfather Myrcella and her other brothers had never felt resentful of their father being too busy all the time. She could recall on one hand the times he'd spent playing with her when she was younger but he'd done it all for them. He worked hard so that they could have what they needed, or so she had been told.

Myrcella nodded slowly, "I think you should, when you're ready" she said, "He should know and you should get the chance to get you know him"

She was right. It was unfair of Gendry to judge a man he'd never met. It wasn't Robert's fault that he'd not known about Gendry, but he still couldn't help but feel anger and resentment. Maybe he was just directing that anger toward the wrong people.

Idly, Gendry stirred at his coffee some more with a small red straw. It was getting cold, but he didn't care to drink it either way. It was just there. "Any other siblings or anything I should know about?" he asked.

Myrcella popped a nacho into her mouth and chewed thoughtfully while Gendry seemed to mull over what she had said, taking a sip of her drink she nodded, "Joffrey's just over a year older than me and then Tommen's a couple of years younger. Tommen is a love, precocious little kid and he loves videogames. Joffrey is...well he's not very nice really" she shrugged.

"Yes, I remember," Gendry grumbled, running a hand over his cheek at the thought of Joffrey Baratheon. "I mean, in my dreams..." he shook his head. People weren't the same as the dreams, it didn't make any sense what he was saying.

"He's not amazingly different here" Myrcella told Gendry, "He's actually the most similar to the dreams of anybody else I've come across"
