Magius smiled as he passed a fresh towel to Arya. She had once more shown she was growing in skill and strength as a swordswoman. He was proud of her skill and progress and he nodded to her. “You are moving amazingly fast and picking things up very well. You make me proud to call you student.”
He passed her a water bottle as he opened one for himself and took a slow drag of it.
Arya had gotten much better since the first time she’d met with Magius, partly from the sword training she’d gotten in her dreams from Syrio Forel, but also from the training she was getting from Magius himself. It helped that she’d played sports for so long as well. “It helps that dream me was trained too.” She smirked as she took the towel and wiped the sweat from her face then took the bottle of water. In a way Magius reminded her of Syrio only he spoke more plainly than Syrio had and didn’t make her chase cats or balance on one leg for hours.
“Good. The two trainings should reinforce each other.” He smiled. “When you get into the more advanced stuff, then we’ll start more physical conditioning, if you want it. Running and swimming, to get your body used to harder, more long term effort.” He wanted her to have the best he could give her.
“Well, that part of my dreams is kind of over. Some stuff happened and I’m pretty sure my dancing instructor was killed.” She hadn’t seen what had happened to Syrio, but considering the King’s Guard had ganged up on him, Arya was pretty sure he was dead. “I’m in a completely different place in my dreams now and without my sword too.” She hated the fact that Needle had been taken away from her in the dreams. At least she still had it in real life. “And I usually go running every morning. Or almost every morning.” Now that she was out of school and not playing sports regularly, Arya tried to find something to do to keep herself active.
Magius winced. “I’m sorry.” He nodded, listening to her tales. “At least you do that. That’s more than most do. I too run in the mornings, and work at the smithy during the day.” Which was more exercise than exercises would be for him.
“I also have a pool, but I don’t swim as much as I should.” Maybe she’d start alternating between running and swimming. It’d probably be really good for her. After all, what was the point of having such a big in ground pool if it was barely used? “It must get hot as balls in the smithy.” She wondered, not for the first time, if Gendry would feel as at home if he had the chance to go to a smithy as she felt when she held a sword. He’d been a blacksmith’s apprentice in the dreams and made the helmet that he now possessed, so it was entirely possible that the moment he picked up a hammer he’d remember how to do it. She wondered if she should bring it up to him, “In our dreams, my boyfriend was a blacksmith’s apprentice.” She added, voicing part of what she’d been thinking to Magius.
“Perhaps more would be good.” He nodded to her. Good shape was important!
He chuckled at her words. “It does get rather hot there, yes. And its fun, to do and make things. to bring substance out of simple blocks.” He nodded. Then her words made him curious. “Truly? Does he want to pursue such here?”
“Here he works at the Ship Yard. I don’t know if he’s thought about smithing here.” Arya wondered if she should ask Gendry. “He’s got a helm here that he made there. It’s pretty cool. Looks like a bull.”
“Not a bad thing, then, a good piece of work, I am sure.” He smiled. “The Dreams give us much, and take away as much, sometimes.” He smiled faintly.
Arya nodded, she’d lost so much in the dreams, but was glad that what happened there didn’t always happen in real life, “My dreams kind of suck most of the time, but I’ve gotten some cool stuff from them. I mean what other nineteen year old girl has her own sword and wolf these days?” She had never brought Nymeria around during any of their lessons, so Magius had never met her, but that was probably a good thing, because she didn’t want Nymeria to accidently attack him.
“I can understand that.” He smiled at her. “Wolves can be incredible companions as long as they are given freedom.” His dream self had known druids who had wolf companions.
Arya nodded and took another swig of water, “We have a pretty big backyard and I’ve started taking her out to this walking trail near my house. As long as no one else tries to shoot her, we’re fine.” She recalled Merle’s first response when he saw Nymeria had been to reach for his gun.
“Of course.” He smiled at her. “It sounds like you have the situation well in hand.” He had a lot of respect for her. She was far more mature than most of her fellows her age. “As with many things you are doing, I think you are doing the right thing.”
So many people saw her as just another kid because she was short and skinny, but she was almost twenty and an adult, so it was nice that Magius treated her like one, “Thanks. Just doing the best I can.”
“And that is all that can be asked of anyone.” He smiled at her, nodding.
