She wanted to say it was easier to kill, after the Russian. And in a way, it was. It still made her sick each time, but she stopped hesitating. She knew what they'd do to her if they caught her. She knew she had to survive because if she died, she didn't know if Sam and the others would too. Lara knew, in her gut, that she was Sam's only chance - and that pushed her forward. Her stomach bothered her, but when she took a bullet in her arm, it was almost a relief to have the pain spread out past her puncture wound and ribs.
Roth was the first one she found, and the amount of relief she'd felt threatened to overwhelm her. Objectively, she knew her injuries might be more serious, but she fussed over Roth's leg instead. Better to focus on someone else, than on herself. She didn't want to leave him, but she had to. She had to retrieve the radio, and then she had to call for help. The only problem was the old Japanese army base in the way.
The base was quiet, but it was the sort of pregnant quiet that felt like it was just a matter of time before something happened. Lara crept through it, every sense tuned to the world around her. She listened for foot steps and voices.
The first man to come around the corner took an arrow to the eye, and the second his throat. There was a third, and bullets ricocheted around her as she tried to make herself as small a target as possible. She withdrew a pistol, and when the gunfire stopped, she shot back.
She didn't look at their faces as she searched them for ammunition and food. Even bandages would be welcome right now.
Lara found a dead end shortly after that. The only way through was blocked by thick bullet proof glass. It didn’t look blast proof, and while she was planning how to use that discovery, several cultists came into the room and tried to shoot at her. She found cover, then flung an old lamp right into a gas leak. The explosion cleared a path and also removed most of the opposition.
As she picked her way through the wreckage, she heard the man groaning. He was trapped under some rubble.
“Help me.. p-please.”
Everyone she’d met on the island had tried to kill her. Sam was in danger and the Endurance crew could all die. She’d been beaten, shot, stabbed, strangled and worse. She was hungry, tired, and starting to believe that this place would turn her into someone no better than the cultists. Every kill brought her closer, despite the sickness in her stomach. She had the feeling that she would have to kill every last one of them.
Lara lifted her pistol and shot him in the head. “Go to hell.”
