Callisto picked up her cup of coffee from craft services and grabbed some sugar and a plastic spoon, sending a smile in the direction of the guy behind the counter. She was about to head back to the sound stage when she spotted Portia sat at one of the tables nursing a drink. The early morning shoot had been tough on a lot of the crew, the rig had collapsed halfway through a fight scene, the weather couldn’t decide if it was going to rain or not so the actor’s make-up and costumes were being ruined from the walk from the trailers to the soundstage and the sound guys had managed to lose a boom mic. Quite how, Callisto had not figured out but that was what this current wait was for. Deciding she had a little time, she walked over to her friend who was looking a little lost. “Hey, you ok?” she asked, pulling up a seat next to her.
Portia looked up as someone sat next to her and tried to give Callisto her usual bright smile though it fell short. “Hey, rough day” she replied, “You?” Portia had found today hard and they were only half way through, it had been made worse by her impulse to text Alex - as she usually did when she had a rough time at work - only to remind herself that he was no longer hers to text. And he was now not even in the country.
“Rough day? You don’t fool me, P,” Callisto told her, setting her cup down on the table. “What happened?”
Portia sighed before wrapping her hands around her long cold cup of coffee, “Alex left for Germany and then he’s going to be studying in England for four years” she explained before raising sad eyes to her friend, “So we decided to end it”
Callisto winced; a, this wasn’t her forte and b, that was a really bad day for her friend and what were you supposed to say to make it better? “Sorry, P,” she told her. “That is a rough day. Was it...amicable?” she asked, wincing inwardly as she hoped it was the right thing to ask.
“Thanks” Portia replied before nodding, “It was. We love each other but the way we both get so involved with our work...a long distance thing just wouldn’t work and I’m not in a position with work right now to move with him so...” she shrugged.
“Would you have?” Callisto asked without thinking. “If work wasn’t a problem, would you have gone with him?”
“Yes” Portia said without pause, “I love him Callisto. I think I always will” But she had to stay true to herself and she couldn’t give up everything for a man, no matter how much she wanted to.
Callisto nodded. She understood Portia’s dedication to her work, knew she would never just drop everything and run away with a guy. “Sorry P, that really blows,” she lifted her cup and took a drink from it. “So, what are you doing with yourself now? If you say ‘moping’ I will slap you,” she told her with a little smile, hoping to coax one from her friend too.
It did earn her a smile, albeit a small one, "Apart from moping" she raised her hands as if to fend off a slap, "I've been working as much as I possibly can" In fact apart from sleep she did little else.
“That’s not great either, P,” Callisto said. “I mean, I’m not the poster child for break-ups since the longest relationship I’ve ever had was with a carton of milk, but you can’t work yourself into the ground,” she told her. “You’ll make yourself sick.”
“I just need to be busy” Portia replied, “And I have so much to do anyway, it’s not like I can stop. I’ll be fine, I promise” she offered what she hoped was a reassuring smile.
“Ok, if you say so,” Callisto eyed her unconvinced. “Just look after yourself, P and if you ever need anything, I don’t want you to even think about not coming to me, ok?”
"I promise" Portia replied, "And thanks Callisto, that means a lot you know?" she gave her friend a genuine smile.
“Well, you looked after me in my...darkest hour,” Callisto replied with a grimace, referring to watching girly movies during the time she’d been split in two. “A time neither of us will ever repeat to any living soul,” she smiled at her, bumping shoulders with the girl. “You’re the closest thing I’ve ever had to a best friend P, and I gotta look out for ya,” she told her with a smile.
That drew a slight chuckle from Portia, “I will always cherish the memory of you crying when Katherine Heigl finally gets a wedding of her own” she teased, somewhat lighter than she had been. “Same here” she told her friend, “We’ll look out for each other”
“Ugh,” Callisto buried her head in her arms which were folded on the table in front of her. “Don’t remind me! Worst. Moment. Of my life!”
Portia laughed properly then, wrapping an arm around her friends shoulders, “Embrace that girly side of you Cally, you know you want to really” she said in a sing song voice.
“No! Girly side I stab at thee!” Callisto told her dramatically.
“Don’t hurt me Callisto, you love me. Almost as much as you love Katherine Heigl” Portia said in a high pitched girly tone before dissolving into giggles and leaning heavily on her friend.
“My reputation is never going to be the same again,” Callisto said dryly, shaking her head and unable to keep the smile from her face. “You realise I’m going to have to go beat up the poor stunt guys to regain some of my honour now, don’t you,” she told her, watching her friend giggling.
"I've not told anybody, I promise" Portia assured her, "I'm really glad I'm in make up and not stunts, just for the record"
“Hmm…” Callisto looked unimpressed. “We’ll see…” she teased.
Portia smiled back, "I'll get the bruise cover up ready just in case"
“Well you’ll need it for the poor defenseless stunt guys in a few hours,” Callisto winked. “And this Alex if I ever see him again,” Callisto muttered under her breath, taking a drink from her coffee.
"While I appreciate the sentiment, it's not needed" Portia said, having caught the mumbled words.
“I’m just sayin’, P,” Callisto held her hands up in mock defense. “The offer’s there if you want it.”
"Thank you but no. Nobody is to blame except circumstances. If you find those feel free to let loose"
Callisto chuckled at that, spotting a runner calling her back over to the sound stage. “Oh, break’s over, time to go beat up some dicks,” she told her, standing from the table. “Catch ya later, P,” She patted her on the shoulder as she walked passed and back to work.
Portia laughed,"Have fun with that" she grinned as her friend left. She would have to have her over for dinner soon, socialising was good and took her mind off the empty house.
