What: A friend in need
Rating/Warning: Low
Status: Complete
Luisa was worried about Robert. In fact that was somewhat of an understatement. So when he’d agreed to come round for dinner she was very pleased. Sadly Magius was working late but she had made enough so that she could keep some for him to heat up later.
She had set the table for them and had wine and beer chilling in the fridge. She also had a new CD playing which she thought Robert might like to hear, though she doubted it would be new to him.
Honestly, Robert was admittedly surprised by the invitation. He’d never really considered himself the sort to have friends, not real friends, and it did a lot to ease his mind in regards to the similarities between him and his dream self. That Robert, he’d decided, was who he was because he had to be that way in another time. Here, there was more freedom, and maybe he should start letting that into his life a bit.
Not wanting to show up empty handed, he’d stopped at a bakery that Rufus was fond of and got them some assorted cream puffs for dessert. When he knocked on the door, Robert shifted his weight on his feet while he waited.
Luisa answered the door with a bright smile, “Robert, it’s so good to see you” she told him, hugging him before letting him into the house. “How are you today?” she asked him, the concern in her voice obvious but she didn’t mind him knowing she was worried. It’s what friends did after all.
He smiled, as warmly as he could for the time being, and hugged her back gratefully. “I’m … Well, I suppose. Still shaking off the post-dream jitters.” Though he was feeling restless, and his fingers kept fidgeting on the box he was holding. “I brought pastry.” Robert held up the box once he was inside. “They’re Heaven in a cream puff, really.”
“Well let’s get you fed and settled and hopefully we’ll leave some of those jitters behind” she told him kindly, before smiling, “Oh, how lovely. That’s very thoughtful of you. Thank you, they’ll be perfect for after dinner” She led him through to the kitchen where it was warm and smelt rather nice.
Robert decided that he really quite liked Luisa. Well, he’d already rather liked her, but this sort of sealed the deal. And, honestly, he felt very familiar and comfortable around her in a way that he couldn’t necessarily put his finger on. He set the box on the counter and then pulled out a half of a book from his bag.
“I brought this for you, also. It’s called The Pacific Journal of Adam Ewing. It’s about this man, a lawyer, working for his father-in-law in the slave trade and in the midst of it all he discovers he’s a good man. It’s his own personal diaries. Sorry it’s in half like this. I got it from my dreams, where it was in half there as well, and only just found the second half. Which I’ll read while you read this bit. It’s not necessarily very good, but for some reason I’m enthralled, and I think you will be, too.”
Luisa felt similarly, she was a generally shy person but ever since she’d met Robert she’d felt relaxed and at ease in his company. It was a rare thing and she treasured it very much.
“Oh how wonderful” she said as she looked over at the book, “It sounds interesting, I look forward to reading it. I need something new to read so that’s great timing” she added as she bustled around the kitchen, “Oh would you like a drink?” she asked, feeling bad for not asking sooner.
“If you’ve got tea, that would be extremely lovely.” Robert leaned against the counter, fingers tapping out a soundless tune against it. “I think at some point we ought to have a big dinner. So you can meet Rufus and I can meet your special chap.”
“Of course” she said, moving to fill the kettle up and boil the water for tea. “I think that’s a wonderful idea. I know Magius would love to meet you, Rufus too” she smiled, and she would love Robert to meet Magius too. After all they were the two most important men in her life.
“Rufus gets along with everyone, even if he’s clueless when it comes to socializing. He’d be a complete charmer without even realizing it.” Robert pauses, and laughs a bit. “In my dreams, he’s got this trilby. And it’s awful, you know, really just awful. But he shows up and he’s wearing it and it’s beautiful. He’s like that. I’m very lucky to have him.”
Luisa laughed lightly, "Natural charm is the best kind" she said with a nod, "Love at first sight?" she asked smiling, "I'm sure he feels lucky to have you too"
“Well, if I ever needed proof that he and I are soulmates, it’s all of this dreaming nonsense. Do you know, in the letter I wrote, in my dreams, I told him that I believe there’s a better world for us, and I’ll be waiting for him. Of course, I also told him to meet me in Corsica, but the pub by the campus is close enough, don’t you think?” Robert actually cracked a bit of a smile. He just felt so relaxed around Luisa, like he knew she’d understand him. “How are your dreams coming?”
"I think that's a wonderful way to look at this, like a second chance to do things right. You've been through and can appreciate everything that happened to your dream self and make sure not to repeat mistakes" Luisa smiled, "Mine are going very slowly. I've just started an investigation into a nuclear story"
“Ooh, sounds exciting. Also, more reason for you to meet Rufus. He could explain all that nonsense to you.” Mostly, Robert was just curious to see how Luisa knew his song. A part of him was certain that they had some sort of connection, but he could hardly say how or why. “I hope they pick up soon. I’m dying to hear your adventures.”
"That would probably be really great actually" Luisa said, "Even in my dreams I don't understand it all. I think I'm going to get a run of them soon. I keep getting headaches before sleeping, it feels like something is coming"
Robert sat at the table and put his chin in his hands, watching Luisa with a mild fascination.
“Have you gotten the headaches before? Isn’t it strange how our bodies try to warn us of things? Almost sort of spooky, really.”
Luisa shook her head, “I’ve had migraines induced by writing before but I’m not prone to headaches. I think you’re right, it is kind of spooky though I appreciate the warning” she smiled.
“Well, do keep me posted.” Robert got up from the table, moving to hover around the stove to watch Luisa getting dinner ready. “It smells delightful.”
“I will” she nodded, as she continued to ready their meal. “Thank you, I only hope it tastes delightful too” she grinned at him as she began to dish up, “I’ve never been a cook before but Magius does it a lot so I though I’d try so it wasn’t always left to him”
“That’s cute.” He grinned at her as he settled back at the table, excited to taste her adventures into cooking. “And it looks wonderful, too.”
She blushed slightly, “Thanks” she said, she’d take cute over silly or girly anyday. “Do you or Rufus cook?” she asked him as he set the plate and drink down in front of him before sorting herself out and taking a seat.
“Rufus does. My idea of cooking is dialing a phone and making Rufus pay.” Robert grinned. “I keep thinking I should learn, though. If he’s going to go be a famous scientist and I’m going to be the housewife, I should start getting some skills under my belt.”
Luisa chuckled, “He’s going to be a famous scientist and you are going to be a famous composer” she corrected him, “but I have to admit I’ve enjoyed learning more than I thought I would. I never expected to want to cook yet look at me now”
“Well, let’s not get ahead of ourselves.” But Robert looked pleased anyway. He always did when people complimented him. “You know, I feel much better already. I think I just needed to get out of the house and let my mind focus on other things.”
“Nonsense. It’s a simple fact” she told him nodding before giving him a smile, “I’m so glad. I hated seeing you so upset. And you’re always welcome here you know. Anytime you need to get out of the house just pop over, I’m hardly ever out. Especially now I’m in editing mode”
“Maybe we can be shut-ins together. I’ll bring over my music and sit here and toil away over my manuscripts, while you sit there and toil over yours, and we can sip at tea and vent our frustrations at one another. It could be delightful.” He grinned cheerfully at her over a bite of his dinner.
“That sounds rather wonderful actually” Luisa replied with a grin of her own, “And it would save us from those times of loneliness that can hit” Their chosen careers were actually more similar than would have been assumed.
“Excellent. I do so look forward to it, then.” Robert picked up his glass in a mock toast. “Cheers.”
Luisa picked up her own glass, “Cheers” she grinned as she clinked their glasses together.
