Myrcella had a free period and was in the school library studying when she noticed a girl who she had seen on her first day back but not much since then. Frowning she realised the girl must be in her class as it was only because her teacher was off sick that she had a free lesson. But she couldn’t recall her being in it at all.
When she saw the girl heading for the fire exit she realised why. Swiftly gathering up her things she moved to follow, reaching her just as she was about to open the door “I wouldn’t do that if I were you” she said, “They’ve connected up the alarms to the doors. The engineers came in last week to do it”
Irisa stopped with her hand on the door at the voice, looking up at the wiring from the door to the alarm. “Damnit,” she swore under her breath, hanging her head as she took her hand off the door. “Thanks,” Irisa turned to face the girl behind her, hooking her thumb in the strap of her backpack. “Don’t suppose you know any other ways outta here, do you?” she asked as she walked past the girl, expecting her to follow.
“That’s okay. I wouldn’t want you to get into trouble” Myrcella replied kindly before she followed the girl, since that seemed to be expected of her. “Why do you want to get out? There’s only a couple of classes left of the day. Aren’t you worried about getting into trouble?”
“Trouble? Nah, nothing in here is worthy of the name ‘trouble’,” Irisa told her as they walked, checking the fire exits they passed as they went. “It’s boring here that’s why I wanna get out, there’s so much more to learn out there,” she jutted her chin towards the outside. “I nearly got a job last week just from hanging out around this shop. Only came away without it coz the guy figured I was too young,” she groused.
“I agree that some classes are boring but not all of them. What are you learning out there?” she asked curiously, “I can’t imagine hanging around a shop can teach you much” There would be plenty of time for working the rest of their lives, Myrcella didn’t understand why this girl was in such a hurry.
“I dunno,” Irisa shrugged. “You learn about people, real life, what it’s like to be an adult,” she explained. “Practically nothing we learn in here will ever help us in the real world, it won’t teach you common sense and wits,” she shrugged again. “And you need them more than stupid algebra.”
“We’ll learn all that when we graduate though” Myrcella pointed out, “And if you want to be an accountant or something then algebra is pretty handy. Just because you dislike something doesn’t make it useless. Knowledge is power after all, and you need a good education behind you unless you want to end up in some dead end job for the rest of your life”
“Listen, some people don’t get on with books and desks and pencil pushing,” Irisa told the girl, getting irritated by the way she seemed to be judging her. “I can do algebra and English, I know about biology and chemistry and nothing I’ve learnt so far has made me want to learn more or do anything with them in the future, it’s boring,” she told her, hand in her pocket, the other holding onto the strap of her bag, sighing in irritation as one of the stupid popular girls bashed into her shoulder on purpose. Another reason she hated school.
Myrcella sighed, “If you say so. I just think it’s a shame, because it sounds like if you applied yourself in lessons you’d be top of the class” she said, “But if you’ve decided it’s boring before you’ve even been to a class there’s not much hope of that happening. I think the gym exit is still un-alarmed if you’re determined to leave. It was nice to meet you” she added with a kind smile before she turned to head back towards the library to wait out the rest of her free period. She didn’t know how the other girl could whitewash that all classes were boring when she knew she hadn’t been to some, Myrcella would have seen her.
“Hey!” Irisa followed her indignantly. “I can apply myself as well as the next kid, difference is that I found out it doesn’t matter, no-one gives a damn, not really,” she told her. Her other teacher’s hadn’t cared. Her parents hadn’t cared. The only one she could rely on was Nolan and he taught her life skills, how to survive in a crazy world that didn’t care about the little guy.
“Why does it matter what they think?” Myrcella asked her, “Surely the only one who needs to give a damn is you? Learn because you want to. For you not for anybody else. The lessons I have here aren’t going to be relevant to the job I want to do but it doesn’t stop me trying. I want to finish school proud of myself and bugger what anybody else thinks about it”
“I never said it mattered what they thought,” Irisa defended. “I said they didn’t care. All they’ll do is use you once you’re out of here, for everything you have to give and they won’t care about how much they take or what they leave behind,” Irisa told her. “I’m not going to be one of those people,” she bristled.
“Then don’t be, but don’t waste the chance to get an education just to stick it to the man or however you want to see it” Myrcella said, “You’re bright, if you think you’re being used you move on or fight back. And if you want to do that you stand more of a chance of being taken seriously with a good education behind you”
“Alright then,” Irisa swung her bag off her shoulder and on to the table in front of the other girl. “If I stick around, you’re gonna be my new buddy, teach me,” she straddled a chair. “Show me what’s so great about being here,” she challenged.
Myrcella smiled, “Okay, you’re on” she replied confidently as she sat down next to her new friend, “Get ready to have fun at school”
