John sat in his office feeling an odd sense of completion. Lately his life, despite the OC’s oddnesses, had been downright ordinary, if you discounted that he had an alien living in his head. Sort of.
He worked hard, and went home to a beautiful and loving wife, and the sex was good. And life seemed perfect. But he had become aware that his friend was not having so good a time, so when lunchtime rolled around, he stepped out and headed for Pansy’s desk.
“Pansy? Free for lunch?”
Pansy had a good job. That was about the best thing in her life right now. She had a wonderful brother, too, and no matter who her biological parents were, Draco would always be her brother. They were as good as blood, if you asked her. But her living situation, her romantic life, even her social life were suffering a bit.
She’d just laid her head down to rest it on her desk when John stepped over. She jumped up, unsettling several things near her keyboard. “What? Yes! I’m awake!”
“I know you are. I notice. Want to get some lunch? Might wake us both up.” He offered her his hand, eyes warm.
“Oooh. Lunch.” Pansy lifted both hands to wipe at her face. She thought a Red Bull might wake her up a bit better than some food, but she didn’t say so. After a moment of consideration, she slipped her hand into his and let him help her to her feet. Then she released it. “You’re buying.” She was only partially teasing.
“I am indeed, because I’m buying you real food, young lady.” He grinned as he led the way out to his car, a nice sedan and opened the door for her, before sliding into the driver’s seat, and starting her up. “I know a good place down the road.”
Pansy didn’t mind. She didn’t have to grab a purse, as everything she needed fit in her pockets. Yeah, she was a purse-less girl. She slipped into the car and settled in, then reached forward to fiddle with the radio. “Yeah? What kind of food?”
“Grill, so mostly American, but they have sushi and some Chinese, too.” He glanced over at her. “How are you doing? You really seem to have had a bad time lately.” Care and concern was in his voice.
“Burgers and fries are my life’s blood.” Pansy said, giving a nod. She wanted a shake, too. Chocolate. But his question caught her a little off guard. Now she was worried that he’d noticed her having a hard time, and that it was affecting her work. She really didn’t want to lose her job. “I’m okay. I’m good. Fine.” She said, hoping that didn’t sound as fake as it was.
John sighed. “Pansy, I am not trying to read your mind, but, ah, you are projecting rather loudly. Your job is not in danger, and I am just worried because I am your friend.” He smiled softly, sadly as he glanced at her.
Pansy raised both eyebrows at that, and then gave a deep sigh. Occlumancy. Or whatever his Dream!World equivalent was of it. She didn’t mind so much, actually she gave a little chuckle. “It’s that bad, is it? Well… Peter and I broke up. He was… Apparently, he wasn’t happy, he was seeing someone else behind my back, and I felt so stupid when I found out. So… now I’m trying to figure out what to do with … everything.”
“I just… you are plainly not happy.” He smiled sadly and nodded. He listened as she talked and he winced. “I can imagine so. I don’t know that I can help, but know that I am here, if I can.”
“You’re great, John. Thanks.” Pansy said, giving him a little smile. “But I don’t think there’s anything to be done. Unless you can find me a cheap, clean and safe apartment to rent.”
John blinked, then grinned. “Well, actually, yes. I used to live in a set of apartments down the street from my current home. It’s tasteful, but totally cheap and rather safe.”
Pansy blinked at him. “What, really? How much?” She asked, trying not to get excited. She’d never lived on her own before. It’d be a whole new can of worms. But she was making enough now that she could afford it. On her own, even. Without the help from “her parents.”
“$599 a month, for a one bedroom, with a six month lease.” He smiled at her. “It’s quiet, and its a cop and government worker neighborhood, so there is little crime and little trouble in the area.” He eyed her, eyes warm.
Pansy’s eyebrows nearly disappeared into her hair. “...really? Who do I call?”
He chuckled as he saw her reaction, parking at the burger place. “Here we are. And I have their number in my contacts. I’ll give it to you.”
“You’re amazing. Thank you.” Pansy thought maybe today was turning up a little. She might have a new place to live and she hadn’t thought about Peter in… damn. Her face fell slightly. She sighed.
“You’re my friend. What else are friends for but to be there?” He nodded to her and hopped out, opening her door. And then maybe surprised himself by giving her a hug.
Pansy was a hugger. She lifted her arms and returned the hug, finding that it helped. It helped a lot. “Thanks, John.”
He smiled. “You’re welcome. Now lets get some food, and just relax for awhile.” He nodded.
