Wally was pretty excited about getting out into nature with Tiffany. They hadn’t done much outdoorsy stuff, and Wally was looking forward to it. He had a pack on his back with water, first aid supplies, lunch and snacks, and a couple of light jackets just in case it got suddenly cold. But it was a beautiful day, the trail was clear, and they started out without a care in the world.
Tiffany had a lot of life experience--hell, she’d recently started taking flight lessons--but hiking wasn’t something she’d ever done, before. Maybe it had just fallen through the cracks. Maybe she’d been so averse to moving to California that she’d rejected it outright. But whatever her reasons in the past, she was looking forward to it now, simply because it was something Wally had suggested. It was a new facet of him and she was excited to see it.
Wally pulled into the parking lot next to the trail they were going to take. It went up by the ocean and onto a cliff nearby. There were some woods, but it was mostly sand and rocks they were going to be hiking through and past. He climbed out of his side of the car and pulled his pack from the trunk, then moved around to her side while he pulled it on. “Are you ready?”
She’d bought new boots, so Tiffany was pretty sure she was ready. It was really more like a walk. It wasn’t like they were going mountain climbing. “Yeah. You look damn good, by the way,” she said, closing the door behind her. He did. All woodsy and rugged. Like he might hunt for dinner and then cook it himself over a fire.
Wally blushed. He hadn't been expecting that. A grin took up residence on his features that he couldn't shake. Not that he wanted to. "Thanks. You always look damn good." He'd told her once before that she looked good today, and the sunshine made her glow.
“Yeah, well, you look like the new guy on the Brawny commercials,” she said, giving a wink as she walked away from the car. There was a pronounced sway in her hips that had more to do with the new footwear than trying to look sexy.
It was sexy nonetheless. Wally couldn’t help but watch her as she moved, still blushing a bit at her compliments. He moved along with her, catching up so he could walk beside instead of behind. It was easier to resist the temptation of watching her hips sway when they were side by side. “...paper towels?”
“Yeah, the lumberjack guy,” she said, looked across her shoulder to Wally beside her. “Not the old one with 70s, porno mustache.” She was not a huge fan of facial hair in general, and Wally had a baby-face.
The only Lumberjack that came to mind for Wally was the one from the old Monty Python sketch. He didn’t think he looked like one of those. But he took it as a compliment, anyway. “Not sure I could rock the porno mustache.” He agreed, turning onto the next path.
“Please don’t try,” she said, smirking at him. And then Tiffany slipped her hand into his.
It would have made Wally laugh, but then he felt her hand in his. His pace slowed just a little, as if now he didn’t want to get to his destination any faster than was absolutely necessary. His hand squeezed hers gently.
The way their fingers laced together was a lot like the way they were putting their relationship back in order. Geez, relationship. Tiffany couldn’t remember the last time she’d used that word, even in her own head. It wasn’t terrifying her at the moment, though. She paused to look back at him.
Wally caught her eye and stopped walking. He turned to face her, blushing and breaking into a shy smile. “...yes?”
“I’m just digging you,” she said, off the cuff and with a smile. Then, Tiffany paused and bit her lip. “I’m just glad we’re here right now. Physically… and, like, metaphysically, too.”
Wally’s blush spread and deepened. It seemed like those were the perfect words. He squeezed her hand, then leaned in to steal a kiss from those absolutely perfect lips. “Metaphysically, too.”
Tiffany might have purred as he kissed her. Instead, she was silent as she wrapped her arms around his neck. Stealing one just wouldn’t do. She wasn’t going to let go of him so easily this time.
