Who: Severus Snape and Steve Rogers.
When: Saturday, Sept 21
Where: Donut Shop
What: Waiting in line
Rating/Warning: Low/None
Status: Complete

Severus had a list. Daisy liked such-and-such kind, Romana liked such-and-such kind, and the other kind froze the best. (Freezing donuts. It’s a thing.) So they could buy a dozen, and have them throughout the week. Especially for dessert with ice cream on top. He was standing in line, waiting for the single donut shop employee to help him pick out his dozen.

Normally, Steve didn’t really eat donuts. Only whenever he was with Verity, it seemed, which was sort of nice, he thought. Like donuts and cupcakes were sort of their thing. But he figured he’d treat himself to something sweet and then probably bring the rest by to Tony at work or something.

As he waited in line, patiently, as was Steve’s way, he couldn’t help but smile a bit. “Poor kid. You’d think they’d have the right mind to schedule someone else with him on a weekend. He’s doing pretty great, though.”

Severus wasn’t really expecting a voice coming from behind him. He turned to look and saw a man he thought he recognized from the internet, but didn’t know too well. One of his eyebrows raised. “He’s doing pretty great?” He repeated, disbelieving.

“Well … Sure,” Steve said, glancing back at the sole worker. “He’s got a huge line up, everyone’s getting big orders, and he just keeps smiling and doing his best. Good work ethic, makes the wait seem less awful, you know?”

“He looks a bit flustered and terrified to me.” Severus said, turning to nod at the kid behind the counter. “...he keeps dropping things.”

“But he’s still polite,” Steve pointed out. “You don’t go a lot of places where people are having bad days and they still say thank you and wish you a good day.” Honestly, if there was a comment card or something, Steve was going to give the boy a glowing review.

Severus was more interested in expedience, rather than courtesy, but he didn’t say as much. The other, taller and more handsome man had a point. At least the kid wasn’t freaking out and being rude. He was handling the customers with decency and respect. Which was more than Severus could say he’d be doing if their positions were reversed. “It is nice to hear.” He nodded once.

Steve looked pleased that the stranger got it. He was a bit worried that he’d have to watch the man snap at the poor kid, but it looked like that wasn’t going to happen. The line shuffled forward and Steve nodded a bit.

“Hey, looks like you’re next.”

Severus was more of a slow, cold burn kind of fellow. He might say something snarky, but he wasn’t about to snap or accuse. Sarcasm was more his style. At the moment, though, he was really only interested in getting his donuts to take home to his wife and daughter. “Oh. Thank you.” He said, then stepped forward to order.

The poor kid dropped a tray of donuts on the floor, and Severus bit his lip to prevent an eyeroll.

Steve just gave the kid a look of sympathy. The amount he was going to tip was already growing dramatically in his head, and he just hoped that someone came by soon so the poor kid could take a break and relax.

Severus waited a moment while the poor kid (who looked about near to tears now) picked up the donuts he’d dropped and put them into the trash. Couldn’t sell them once they were on the floor. Then Severus ordered his donuts, and then paid for them. He turned to the man in line behind him as he slipped a small tip into the tip jar.

“I hope I went easy enough.” He teased. Normally Severus would have been a bit more cold with the boy.

Steve just laughed a bit. “I think you did great. I hope you have a good weekend. Enjoy those donuts.”
