Jessie made her way to the address James had given her. She was full of nervous excitement to see her best friend again, she had truly missed him so much and felt bad about the way they had left things. It had been her fault really, she’d hated the idea of him moving away and had reacted badly.
Still they had a second chance now and she really wanted to mend things - he was pretty much the only person from her childhood who she had left now. The only part of her family really as she still saw him as such.
Knocking on the door she waited for him to answer. Shortening the leads for the ferrets who she had brought along to meet him.
James was excited to hear from Jessie, so much so that he was bouncing around his apartment trying to clean it. It was usually neat, but he did manage to throw some clothes in the hamper and wipe down the kitchen, all with an apron tied around his waist. When she knocked, he looked up suddenly, grabbing his shirt to pull over the T-Shirt he was cleaning in. He tried fixing his unruly hair with his fingers before grabbing the door.
He smiled widely at Jessie, pulling her into a hug. He had missed her. The move had been horrible for him and their fight had hurt, but he was just as much at fault. He just didn’t see another way, and keeping in touch would have hurt more since he didn’t see himself even returning to Minneapolis. “I can’t believe you are here,” he chirped, trying to contain himself. “I’m sorry, I’m so so sorry.” Now that they were older, it seemed so ridiculous for them to have fought in the first place.
A few seconds later he felt the tethers around his leg and looked down, surprised. “They are trying to tie me up,” he said, amused with the little furry things.
Jessie returned his hug immediately, emotions rushing to the surface and tears coming into her eyes. She shook her head, “I’m sorry too” she told him, “I missed you so much James” she admitted to him. Ever since he’d left she’d felt like a part of her had been missing and really, it had.
She laughed as she looked down, “I think they’re tying you to me” she teased as they tangled the leads around both their legs. Bending slightly she released them from their leads letting them scamper off while she removed the ties from their legs. “Are they okay having a look around? They won’t damage anything” she promised, she couldn’t keep the smile from her face as she looked at him and she knew it would take a while to believe he was really here.
He looked at her for a minute and then down at the little furry things. Her words got to him, and he swallowed. “We were always tied together,” he nodded. “Maybe they are trying to tell us that we can’t move away again.” He already knew that it would be too much for him to take, and he also knew that it was the anger that had made the move bearable.
He let the little ones scamper off around the house. He didn’t know much about ferrets, but he didn’t have much that they could really tear up lying out. He stepped back to look at Jessie, quite different from the girl he knew in middle school. She was pretty, not as tall as he was, hair longer. “You look great. You need to let me do your hair, but you do look great.”
He took her hand and led Jesse over to the sofa to sit. The room was colorful with decorative throws over the furniture. He had always loved the use of color in everything, a sharp contrast to his mother, who liked one or two dominant colors to dictate the scheme. “So, you are still taking care of animals?” he asked, not even sure where to begin, but still so excited about just being together again.
“We were” she nodded, before looking at him seriously, “If you go anywhere I’ll be hot on your trail. You don’t get to move anywhere without me now” And it was true, she couldn’t lose him again. Her heart wouldn’t take it, so she’d simply follow him it was much easier that way.
Bonnie and Clyde were pretty good about not tearing things up, they did bring stuff back to you though, kind of like dogs. They were rather unique creatures. She smiled as he looked at her, “Thanks, nowhere near fashionable for you I’m sure but you always were the better dressed of us” she told him, “You look great too James, and you can do my hair whenever you like” Going to the hairdressers was always kind of an afterthought for Jessie.
Jessie loved his home, it was inviting and just simply James. She kept hold of his hand, liking the contact almost like reassurance this was actually happening. “Of course” she told him, “Only officially now. I’m a qualified veterinarian and I’ve just opened my own little practice here”
“Look at you being all successful,” James laughed, although he had no doubt she would be. “I think you came here just to see me again.” A wide grin spread over his face, silly and charming, a lot like the way he used to be in Minneapolis. He really hadn’t changed that much.
“I can make anything look good, or so I think.” Some of the things he chose were just odd, and then there was the second hand shopping phase, which was pretty forgettable.
“So what about the guys. You’ve got to have them chasing after you now,” he said, still with that same smile.
Jessie smiled brightly in return, “There was obviously something pulling me here, it must have been you” she agreed happily. She loved that he hadn’t changed much since they were younger.
“Of course you can, it’s your gift” she said with a smile and a nod.
She laughed at his next statement, “Oh no, I’m steering clear. I don’t have much luck in the love department so I’ll just be happily single. What about you James? I refuse to believe you haven’t been snapped up by somebody.”
“I’m just magnetic, what can I say?” He still couldn’t believe that she was here. He was so happy about it. By nature, James was a good guy. He always had the cup half full outlook, and it showed in his personality.
When she suggested someone in his life, he looked around him and shrugged. “No, not really. I work too much, and meeting people is hard.” He could talk to people he knew, but when it came to meeting new people or potential interests, he still felt like that tall, awkward kid who got suddenly tongue tied. “It doesn’t help that most of the good guys are taken.”
He arched a brow for a moment. When they were younger, they didn’t really talk about those interests or crushes. In James’ family, being gay was not something his parents would allow. He always thought it was obvious, but he didn’t talk about it. Now that he was out of that house, he didn’t shout it from the rooftops, but he was honest about it. He wasn’t really sure if Jessie had been aware, but she probably did notice.
Jessie couldn’t believe it either, but she was so very happy that the powers that be had led her here. While she wasn’t as naturally cup half full as James being around him again was making her happier and more positive.
She nodded in response, “I know what you mean” she replied, “But we should make time to go out. See if we can find that elusive guy who is just perfect for you. He’s out there somewhere I’m sure” she smiled.
Jessie couldn’t say she’d known but she’d suspected. But it hadn’t been something that ever bothered her. He was her best friend and she loved him completely and utterly. And she was the sort of girl who didn’t really care about sexuality, people were people and you loved who you loved.
James shook his head, giving her a playful eye roll. “I don’t know if the perfect man exists. I do know a pretty nice pianist, but he sadly had a boyfriend, and kind of an open relationship.” His cheeks colored a little bit. Robert was certainly a handsome one, and he enjoyed his company. Then there was the elusive Piers, who he was trying to drag out on occasion. He still wanted one for himself.
“You can set me up, but expect me to do the same.” He wasn’t sure who he would set Jessie up with, but the network seemed to be a good place to go. The wheels were already turning.
He reached over and picked up Jessie’s hand, giving it a squeeze. He was so very happy that she was back. He would have loved to spend those years in high school with her. He had been so angry when he left, but now he knew that it hadn’t been with her at all, but at the fact that they were being separated. “I swear, if you go anywhere again, I will hunt you down.” It was a promise he was keeping.
"Open relationship, is that not just a way of not committing?" Jessie said, "I'm sure we can do better than that"
Her nose wrinkled at his words, "I don't have time for a partner" she told him, "But in the spirit of being fair I will let you try" she winked.
"Goes for me too James, I'm never losing you again" she squeezed his hand back. She couldn't and wouldn't let him go ever again.
“Committing to not committing, I think. There is another one, and he’s a little hard to read, but he at least wants me around as a friend. His body is insane.” He actually blushed a little thinking of those obvious muscles. That man didn’t know how good looking he was. “He used to be in the military. I don’t know. I’ll figure all this out eventually.”
“You however,” he turned to her with that same grin, glad to have the attention off himself and his rather pathetic life. “I will definitely be on the lookout.” He really didn’t understand why all the guys weren’t chasing her already.
“The world better prepare for trouble. We are back. Jessie and James - the sequel.”
"Oh gotcha" she nodded in understanding, "Friend is a good place to start. I think I need to see this killer body" she teased with a grin, "we'll figure it out together"
She laughed, "Okay, if you say so"
