I will be there to cheer for you along the way... Who: Yuna, Magius What: Yuna visits her friend in the hospital. When: 09/15ish Where: Irvine General. Ratings/Warnings: PG-13 for medical stuff. Warnings for the same. Status: Complete!
Magius was grumpy. He was in his hospital bed, tired, and still feeling the edge of the pain he was in despite the medicine. He knew the reasons why it was so, but that didn’t help him feel better about it. It was all he could do not to take his frustration and annoyance out on the hospital staff, and so he did his best to read and ignore them.
He had been here for a few days now, and it was truly bugging him. Luisa was out getting something to eat and stretching her legs, and so he was here in his room,. trying to ignore the world. He had a friend, one who was armed, go to his house and fetch him some books, and so he read, now, hoping to not jostle the broken ribs, split skull, and many, many contusions and bruises he sported still.
His hospital door opened up, and for a while all that could be seen was a cheerfully colored bouquet. It had the sort of 'fall season' colors one might expect - sunny yellow and orange sunflowers, orange roses, leafy green fronds, and a few other supporting flowers to round it out.
It was quite large, and Yuna's face didn't make its way around it until she'd made it all the way through his door and then shut it. She brought it over to a table beside his bed, trying not to flick her eyes over his state and calculate how bad his wounds were. It was one of the worst things about being in the medical profession.
She smiled a bit, "I think I'm glad that I came with these flowers. This room is... desperately in need of cheer."
He chuckled and smiled to her. “Hello, my dear. How are you? Welcome to my temporary home away from home.” He waved a hand at the nearby chair. “Pull up a chair, please.” He nodded to her, eyes warm.
His voice was weaker than normal, but he had some energy, for the moment. He was on pain medicine, for the slightly cracked skull, several broken ribs, stab wounds, and lots and lots of bruises that dotted his body.
He was a mess. Yuna's fingers twitched a bit, the trained urge to check his chart and his dressings roiling up again inside her. But she wasn't a nurse right now, and she might dishonor him or disrupt his care somehow by interfering.
So instead, she pulled a chair up closer to his bed and settled into it, "I'm so sorry that I didn't show up before now. I... know that the hospital must have meant to call me. They might have, actually, but I've been a little crazy, and they have, too."
“I don’t know their exact procedures. With the slight increase in emergencies, it may be that they have dropped down to calling only family. I’m not sure.” And even if she felt like family, she was not, and thus they might not have called. He wasn’t sure. He’d spent a lot of the time he’d been here in a medical haze. ”Either way, it is not your fault.” He smiled softly at her.
“How are you? Were you or yours affected by this mess?”
Yuna chewed on her lip a bit. It was true, she wasn't exactly family, and he was in a pretty bad state, they may have only called Luisa. But she still felt bad for being completely oblivious.
Then she nodded, "Yes. Rikku is fine, I think, but Ben has some kind of... Evil twin situation. I'm not really sure about the details. He doesn't talk much, and he was busy trying to get his alter ego away from the city so that there wouldn't be any casualties."
“Makes sense. Sometimes, you just have to run with it. Maybe after he will be easier with talking?” Magius made a note to look into it.
"He might be easier to get ahold of then, yes, but we've had a much harder time connecting since we both grew up and got jobs and everything." Yuna shook her head a bit. It was just as much her fault as his. It was so hard to keep her family as close to her as she wanted to, and she was never able to explain quite why.
"... I just hope he's okay. I haven't heard from him since. The dragon he was dealing with looked a lot more dangerous"
“Dragon?” Magius sat up. “Wait what?” He was startled.
Yuna got up out of her chair and gently pressed her hand against his chest, "Please, there's no reason to strain yourself or sit up so quickly like that... You're going to hurt yourself further."
Then she sat down before touching him like that got too awkward, and fidgeted with her hands, "He's a dragon, Ben is. Not like the ones from storybooks. A big... almost mechanical looking one, very ornate. It feels familiar to me, but I'm not sure why. It makes sense that his alter-ego would also be some kind of... dragon-shaped... thing."
Hre relaxed slowly. Then he sighed and listened as she spoke. “And he went to face it? Can he stop it alone?” He was worried now. “In my dreamworld, dragons are… dangerous beyond all things.”
"Where I come from, there are none, not the way we know them. But I know that Ben has a place in my dreams. I know that his other form is familiar. I can't... really explain why. I don't think I've gotten there yet." Yuna folded her hands together so that she'd stop fidgeting, and gave Magius a smile, "He's my big brother. He can face anything, he can conquer anything. I have faith in him."
She hadn't heard from him since his first text message, though. That was a little worrisome, but she wasn't here to talk about Ben. She shook her head, "But I'm here for you, not to worry aloud about my brother. How long do you think they'll keep you here? Do you want to talk about what... happened? Belle didn't give me many details, I'm afraid."
“I hope things go well with him,” He smiled.
“A few more days. Then I’ll be home with a brace and on restricted duty, working only a few days a week until the end of the month.” He smiled to her. He was an exercise nut, and thankfully so. He had maintained a far better condition than most people half his age, and thus healed fairly quickly. Not to mention magic would help some.
A little cheating never hurt.
Cheating with magical healing powers wasn't really cheating in Yuna's book. She was beginning to more understand how her own gifts might work, but not enough to help him with it now.
She smiled at him in return, "I'll help you out at work however I can. I know I had to cut my hours to make room for classes, but I can give 110% when I'm there."
“I know. I have never lacked confidence in you, Yuna. You are an amazing nurse and assistant, and you will be an amazing doctor, one day.” He nodded, eyes full of pride and confidence in her.
She ducked her head and smiled. His words meant a lot to her, his pride in her especially. Yuna often felt blessed to have so many supportive people in her life, and Magius was a special case. He was enough like a father that she sometimes let herself forget he wasn't.
"Well... I am still determined to make certain your words are true. I can't let any of you down, and I... I won't." She nodded.
“I know. You will be a good person and a good doctor, for yourself, not for me. I will be there to cheer for you along the way, and attend your graduation ceremony, and more.” And then he smirked and teased her a little. “And someday, I will give you away to someone to marry and love as well.” He nodded. It would be a day he would be proud of.
He was the only one she'd ever think of to do something like that. Ben might be a close second, she'd definitely want him involved, but Magius had a different place in her heart, and in her life.
She took his hand and squeezed it a bit, "I wouldn't want it any other way. I hope I do... someday. But I think it might wait until I graduate now. Still... I would want you there for all of that."
“And that is fine as well. I married after achieving my MD.” He nodded to her. “And I will gladly aid you as often and as much as I can.”
"You've done so much for me already," Yuna replied, with a smile. She squeezed his hand again, "I want you to concentrate on getting better, now. For yourself, and everyone else in your life. And I... will concentrate on doing everything I can with what you've done for me."
“Thank you. I’ll be fine.”: He smiled to her. “And I am sure you will be too. Just don’t forget who you are.”
"I won't."
Yuna smiled at him, and got to her feet, "I'll let you get back to your book, now that I've looked you over and know you'll be okay. Thank you for letting me visit."
“Always,. I’ll expect to hear how things are going from you.” He smiled at her. “You are a good person and I’ll look forward to seeing you again, soon.” He raised a hand to wave goodbye.
