He nodded in the direction of the counter, "I didn't feel right getting anything before you got here. I don't mind getting us both something if you don't," his mother had drilled politeness into him early. He opened doors, said please and thank you, offered to pay when he was with someone, let others go first. It didn't all stick and in the places it did he wasn't always consistent but he tried. "Unless you want me to get you something insanely complicated, then in that case you'll have to forgive me writing it down."
