Will was looking forward to go back to work. It had been a strange little while, being able to read people’s minds, but now things were calm. He’d gone into headquarters that morning prepared for pain, and had a delightfully mundane morning. Kirsty was due in later, and they had blessed, ordinary interesting work.

Kirsty smiled when she saw her partner, giving him a feeble little wave. “You ready to man the phones for a day? We’re trying to pin down this guy’s whereabouts for the last few days, so we’re trying to get his boys in.” She had her feet up on her desk, and had her ear to a phone receiver.

“I am thrilled to man the phones for a day, Detective Cotton.” Will smiled a little. “A little calm would suit me just fine.”

“Thank god. Last partner I had sulked every time we didn’t pull some Dragnet level heroics. Had to let him know that 90% of what they do on that show would get him fired today.” Kirsty grinned, turning away when someone picked up the phone.

“I’ve read enough true crime to know that good things come to those who wait.” Will sat down, getting comfortable on his seat.

After two hours or so, Kirsty heard quite a ruckus behind her. The other boys in the bullpen were being loud and whispering to each other in a way that wasn’t subtle or quiet. She was about to turn around and tell them to shut it, but then she saw what they were talking about. There was a statuesque brunette standing there, wearing an Oakland Raiders t-shirt and cutoff shorts, her long brown legs capped off with flip flops. “Um.”

Will rose, surprised, but also pleased. “Lilo?” He smiled, walking through the bullpen to bring her back to his desk. “What brings you here?”

Grinning when she spotted Will, Lilo smiled and waved. In her hands was a brown bag, and she held it up as explanation. “Brought you lunch,” she grinned, leaning in to kiss him chastely on the cheek.

He was oddly touched by that. “Thank you.” Will chuckled, kissing her on the cheek right back. He wrapped one arm around her, walking back to sit in his chair. “Did you come all the way down here just for that? It was sweet of you.”

“Do I need a better reason?” Lilo beamed. A cop hooted at her and mused aloud how Graham had scored such a hot pair of legs. The tall Hawaiian girl glared at the cop. “Probably because he’s not a mouthbreather, has a visible neck, and doesn’t refer to women by just bodyparts. Partialism isn’t an attractive paraphilia, Officer Stupidhead.”

Will tried to turn a laugh into a cough, but mostly failed. “I’m ... well, a police station isn’t exactly a bastion of feminism; I am sorry.” But he was even more charmed by her spirit, and kissed her on the cheek a bit longer as they sat at his desk. Kirsty was still on the phone, turned around so she faced away from them.

“I apologize, I’ll be sure to dress as Victorian as possible next time for fear they start humping their desks because of an exposed ankle.” Lilo rolled her eyes, sitting with her legs crossed under her per usual, unaware of how young the position made her look. “Really, I just finished training and I figured I’d swing by since I was near. Weightlifting made me want roast beef, so I got you that pastrami on rye you like.”

“Did it go well?” He didn’t know much about weightlifting, but he knew that weight wasn’t the only factor in a good session.

“Yeah! I’m killing it on leg sled lately, got up to five fifty with five reps. Though I kiiiind of wish I hadn’t, my legs huuuurt.” She wrinkled her nose.

He didn’t understand all of that, but he got enough. “Five hundred fifty pounds?” Will echoed. “That’s ... worrying. And vaguely exciting.” He liked strong women, what could he say? And he felt comfortable enough to quietly make an innuendo with her, even here. It was a good feeling. Will gently pulled her over to sit on his lap, even as he checked his e-mail for information on their quarry.

“Your legs are way stronger than you think they are.” She giggled when he pulled her over, kissing him on the cheek, ignoring the hooting from behind them.

Kirsty hung up the phone with an eyeroll. “His ex-girlfriend wants us to know that if we find him, he owes her back child support. AND SHUT UP. GRAHAM HAS A GIRLFRIEND, YOU HAVE WIVES, I GOT LAID TWENTY MINUTES AGO. NOBODY CARES.” She stood up, hands on hips, glaring at the hooters who promptly sat down and pretended to type.

Will blinked, laughing a little. “You got laid twenty minutes ago?” It wasn’t his preferred phrasing, but it was her direct quote. Still, he’d have imagined her enormous husband would be hard to miss. Oh, God, please, he thought, let him be gone. Kirsty’s pig of a husband seeing Lilo would be worse than any of the good-natured hooting from the bullpen.

Shrugging, Kirsty winked. “I was on lunch, he’s on his way to work.” She blinked as she actually got a good look at Will’s girlfriend. “Holy shit, no wonder they’re hooting. Wow, good job, Will.”

Oh, thank God. Will blushed, though, as Kirsty teased him. “Lilo and I met in unusual circumstances.”

“Oh?” Kirsty grinned. “Tell me, I love finding out how couples met.”

Lilo laughed. “He thought I drowned.”

Will blushed, but didn’t deny it. “Lilo free-dives. Of course, I had no idea, so when the pretty young woman didn’t surface for four minutes, I thought something had gone wrong.”

Kirsty gaped. “So wait, you just ... dive really deep? For what?”

Shrugging, the tall girl grinned. “What’s the point of any sport? Just to see if I can, mostly.”

Will still didn’t quite understand it, but he accepted that Lilo loved it. “She came up looking like that part of Dr. No, and I was somewhat ... struck.”

Lilo blushed deeply, ducking her head. “I did not,” she murmured, giggling. Kirsty, on the other hand, ‘awww’’d quietly, grinning. “You two are precious.”

“We are not.” Will was fairly sure he wasn’t any kind of precious.

“It’s nice seeing people happy,” Kirsty shrugged. That was all she’d meant. Lilo looked so content on Will’s lap, her eyes closed - it made Kirsty smile.

“I’ll give you that.” Will smiled over at his partner a little, then up at Lilo. “One other issue seems to be working out for the moment,” he said gravely. “Her dog has a crush on my dog Winston.”

“Oh, Winston started it, apparently.” LIlo giggled, leaning her head down to kiss Will lightly on the mouth. “Daisy said that he’s got a flirty tail.”

Right, and they said they weren’t adorable? Kirsty laughed. “You guys have a way better ‘how we met’ story than me and my husband. He was a one night stand that was kinda sweet.”

“That’s much more common, though.” Will shrugged. “If ever anyone doubted that one-night stands can sometimes work out.” He couldn’t help the faint smile. He’d not had a one-night stand since high school, but others tended to do it more often.

“I was just used to more of those, honestly - just because being a dick takes so much time.” Kirsty shrugged her shoulders. “I don’t know, I never thought I’d get married ever, period.”

“It does take a lot of time,” Will replied, “but I don’t know, I’ve made time for her.” He didn’t go anywhere near the M word; Lilo hopefully wouldn’t expect that.

“He’s the best boyfriend ever,” Lilo nodded. “He always lets me know what he’s up to, even if he’s busy, so I don’t worry my head off.” She nodded at the bag. “Eat, eat, you’re too skinny.”

That made Kirsty laugh. “And she’s the world’s tallest Jew to boot!”

Will blushed at that, but he obediently set to eating, He did appreciate the thought, and pastrami on rye was his favorite. “Thank you for bringing it for me, Lilo.” He smiled.

“Of course! There’s chips in there too, but they’re the baked stuff. I figured police vending machines wouldn’t put a premium on health foods.” Lilo stood up. “Should I stay, or do you need to work?” She put up her long dark hair, and when her shirt rode up on her arms, it exposed a lot of ink.

“You can stay just a bit longer.” Will looked at her arms, smiling. “Did you get a new one, or am I just unobservant?”

“Just unobservant!” Lilo rolled up her sleeve. “Which one were you looking at?” She had dragons and a few words in kanji on each arm.

“The Japanese writing.” Will ran his fingers up her arm.

“Oh, no, that’s always been there,” she smiled. She closed her eyes when he gave her goosebumps, and Kirsty turned to make another phone call. It was only polite.

Will did see Kirsty turn, and he sighed. Maybe he’d missed a social cue. “On second thought, unfortunately, I should probably help Kirsty with these calls. But I’ll walk you out.” Best not to let her walk past the bullpen and get all the hooting again.

Lilo wrapped an arm around Will’s waist, smiling and kissing him gently. “Next time you get some time off, you should come over.” She just liked seeing him.

“I would like that very much.” He got up. “I’ll be right back, Kirsty.”

Lilo waved. “It was nice meeting you, Kirsty. You should come by sometime when you have a day off. Will says you have a dog, mine always likes meeting new people.”

Kirsty waved back, nodding. “I’ll get your number from Will, it’ll be fun.” She needed more female friends anyway.

Will smiled as he led Lilo back toward the exit. Thankfully, the bullpen stayed quiet. Once he got her to the doorway and through, he kissed her firmly, watching eyes be damned. “It was good to see you.”

“It was good to see you too,” Lilo smiled, still smiling from the kiss. She stroked his cheek, liking the way his stubble felt on her thumb. “Remember what I said, just call me and let me know you’re coming over whenever you get time. I’ll make you food.”

“That wouldn’t be the only reason I came to see you, by the way.” Will smiled. She’d been so patient with this job change, and it meant a lot to him.

He kissed her one more time. “I’ll call on my next day off.” That was a promise.
