What: Bruce sees a crime in progress and makes a foolish decision.
Rating: PG-13 for violence.
Status: Complete.
It was foolish. The logical part of Bruce's mind, the part not eaten up by instinct, knew that the right choice was to keep on walking. Strange dreams of shadows and suits did not make him a crimefighter. He was fit in the way that attractive middle-aged men were fit; he didn't know enough about his own body and how to hold his weight, how to time movements to use an opponent's momentum against them. He had enough vague memory to know that he should know these things, but not enough to make it happen. The bit about stepping in, however? Yeah, apparently that had crawled down into his subconscious and curled up to stay for the long term. He started well; didn't call out, didn't announce himself. If there'd been one instead of three, Bruce would reflect later, he might have had more success. Instead, he was found five minutes later by a woman on the way to her own vehicle, bruised and cut and huddled up against a cement wall. Bruce had gotten off lucky; they'd only pounded him raw and taken his wallet and watch. He could have been dead. Should have been, said the bit of his mind that sounded like the man in the dream, the man who wore a black suit of body armor and took everything so seriously. Should be dead. Stupid. Luck and the shortsighted arrogance of criminals, that's why I'm alive. For a split second, he thought I need to prepare. I need to be better next time. And then, the larger, rational part thought ...I might actually be going insane. Forget 'next time.' This time had gone badly enough, and what was he going to say to the paramedics? The worried woman with the cell phone was already dialing them. |
