The last few days had been weird. Not only had Percy broke the doorknob in his room then had to try and explain it to his roommate and his RA, but he could lift pretty much anything with ease. It had taken a day or so to get his new found super strength under control, but once he did, he couldn’t help but lift the most random things just to see if he could. When his pen rolled off his desk and went under his bed while he was doing homework, instead of getting down on his hands and knees to see where it went, he’d lifted the bed since his roommate had been in the bathroom at the time. Yeah, Percy might have been going a little overboard, but it was fun.
Annabeth on the other hand didn’t seem to be having quite as much fun as he was with this whole thing. As far as he knew she was still having trouble with hearing everything everyone thought and was in her room. Being the good friend that he was, okay so his crush had something to do with it too, he went around to the classes that he knew she had and since she’d already emailed her professors to tell them she’d be out, it was easier than he’d thought to get her work out of them.
He’d then headed to her dorm. Chances were she wouldn’t be diving right into the reading, but at least it might get him some points, for getting the work for her. Reaching her room, he knocked lightly, not wanting to knock too hard and put a hole through the door.
Taking a week off of school was not how Annabeth wanted to start her college career, but she could not be in a room with a large amount of people without wanting to scream in pain. The tip about the tinfoil had been helpful and she was wearing a knit cap that covered up her tinfoil hat. Things had gotten better and she popped a few aspirins to help keep things at a dull roar. She pretended to have the flu to her roomie and she actually believed her! And it also worked on her teachers who were kind enough to excuse her and Percy was amazing enough to go get some class work for her. She didn’t want to fall behind, so she was most thankful for that.
When the knock came she called out for Percy to come in and turned to watch him from her spot at her desk. She was dressed simply and casually in a t-shirt and yoga pants. Having Percy going through somewhat the same thing really helped her cope because they could discuss everything and he wouldn’t think she was completely strange.
Hearing her voice through the door, Percy carefully turned the knob and entered the room, “Hey, how’re you feeling?” He quirked a brow at the knit cap she was wearing, not aware of the tinfoil underneath it. If he knew, he might have to tease her a little about it. “I got you whatever assignments I could,” He waved a couple papers at her; mostly handouts as well as a sheet of notebook paper which had page numbers for the readings in whichever subjects he’d been able to get her work from.
Percy set the papers down on her desk then took a seat on the edge of her bed; or at least the bed he assumed was hers, “Read anyone’s minds lately?”
“You rock, Percy Jackson,” she swung her legs around to get up and walked over to him to grab the papers. She flashed him a smile as she moved to put the papers down on her desk beside her computer before chuckling, “Yeah. I can tell you what basically everyone on this floor is freaking out over. And what guys they think are hot. Oh and what they think about the food downstairs. What about you? Broken anything else lately?” As she spoke she sat back down in the chair and turned to face him properly.
“Well, we can’t let you fall too far behind. You’d probably have a nervous breakdown or something.” Percy teased, knowing how studious Annabeth was. As she talked about the things she’d heard from the minds of the other people in her dorm, “Have you heard anything you could have lived without hearing?” While she was wearing a hat, he didn’t realized that she was wearing tinfoil on her head underneath in, “Can you read my mind now?”
“I probably would actually. I freaked out about the fact that I would have to tell them that I would be out for as long as this lasted. And I have heard a lot of things that I could do without. There are some gross thoughts in people’s minds. It’s sooooo not okay. I can never look at them again,” she admitted with a laugh and then pulled off her knit cap and revealed that there was tin foil inside of it, “I couldn’t really right now. Someone mentioned tin foil on the network and it helps to muffle things. Now I could listen if I tried. It’s not as bad as it was before.”
Percy’s brows rose slightly as Annabeth pulled off the cap to show the tinfoil, “I had wondered why you were wearing that hat.” Of course, knowing that Annabeth could now read his mind, Percy couldn’t help but hope that she didn’t, because then she’d know about his crush. Of course thinking about this now while Annabeth’s didn’t have her tinfoil barrier meant that if she was paying attention she more than likely would read exactly that off him, “Doesn’t it make your head hot though?”
“What? I don’t look good in a hat? You’re hurting my feelings there, Percy,” she teased him with a playful smile. Her smile wavered for a moment as she did actually manage to hear his thoughts since he was so close to her. The fact that he had a crush on her was news to her and she almost wanted to smile more and she also suddenly felt very shy around him. At least she knew that if she told him about her crush on him it might be returned. Then she had to get out of her thoughts when he asked her a question, “Oh, um, not really. It’s pretty cool in here.”
"What? No, I didn't say that." Now Percy was getting even more flustered. Percy knew she was teasing him, but at the same time he felt like he had to make sure that she knew that he didn't think that at all. In fact, he thought that she looked cute with the knit cap. And there he went thinking again. He really needed to just stop. "That's good. Wouldn't want to overheat on top of everything." Yeah, cause that wasn't lame at all. Percy really wasn't doing too good here.
She heard the cute comment in her head and she couldn’t help but grin. She definitely wanted to tease him about it and she might just have to, “No, overheating would be bad. Especially since my roomie won’t be back for a while so no one would find me if I passed out or something. And you think I look cute in the knit cap? Good thing fall is coming so I can wear more of them.”
Whatever Percy had been about to say was forgotten when Annabeth called him out on his thoughts and his eyes widened slightly. If she’d heard that then had she heard the other part too? He really needed to stop thinking now, “Well, yeah, I mean, it helps that you’re cute.” Inwardly Percy cringed, wishing he could just stop talking. The last thing he wanted was for Annabeth to find out that he had a crush on her and then turn him down because she didn’t feel the same way about him. They’d been friends for so long now that he was sure that she probably thought of him as a brother or something, “Does it get cool enough out here for hats like that?” Yeah, that was a good save.
“Awwww,” she cooed with a bashful smile and a blush on her cheeks. That would probably be as far as their awkwardness would let them go in actually discussing their mutual crush. She was going to take it for now because she didn’t want to push the issue. She was still reading his thoughts and she bit her lip to keep from grinning even more, “Yeah, it can get a little cold near the coast. It doesn’t get really cold like New York, but you can rock a knit cap if you want to.”
A faint blush also colored Percy’s cheeks, but he was glad that she didn’t say anything else about what he’d just said and instead answered his question, “How cold does it get in the winter?” He was grateful for the topic change, but he was still a little frazzled and embarrassed over her hearing that he thought she was cute, but hopefully they could move past that.
“Um, I think it’s cold get down into the 50’s/60’s around here. I could be completely wrong because this is a different area than where I grew up, but the wind off the coast can make it colder. I have no idea actually,” she answered honestly with a loud laugh and then turned to her computer to try and do some googling on the subject and maybe she could get a better answer for him.
“I’m gonna miss the snow. I know I told you during the winter that I’d be happy if I never saw snow again, but that’s what a blizzard will do to you.” Percy wasn’t sure what he was doing during Christmas break yet, but it was possible that he might go home and see his mother and new stepfather. A thought began to form in his head, but he quickly squashed it, not wanting Annabeth to read it.
“Well, there is snow around here, you just have to go into the mountains. I’m sure that we can take a trip sometime during the winter if you really want to. You can teach me how to snowboard or ski. I don’t really know how to do either,” she explained. It could be a great trip and she wondered if the school would have a club that would do a trip like that or something.
“I can snowboard, but not ski. I think I’d break my neck if I tried skiing.” Percy certainly wouldn’t mind going somewhere with Annabeth; after all that was the main reason he’d moved out there, so that they could spend more time together. “But that’d be a fun trip. I guess I’ll have to go buy some warmer clothes soon. I didn’t think it would get that cold, so I didn’t really bring much winter stuff.” He certainly hadn’t brought clothes for snowboarding.
“It’s not something you have to worry about just yet. You’ve got some time before it gets ‘cold’ around here. I’m pretty sure hoodies and shorts might be a common fashion we see around here,” she turned her head and noticed the time on the clock, “Oh wow, it’s getting late already. I should probably get started on some of this homework so I’m not completely failing by the time Monday rolls around.”
“Shorts and hoodies I can do,” Percy smirked and glanced at the clock when Annabeth mentioned the time then he stood up, “Right. I’ll let you get to that. I’ll grab what I can tomorrow too and bring it to you. Unless you email your teachers for the work or something.” Either way he would probably text her at some point to see how the whole telepathy thing was going and if she was feeling alright.
“Thank you again so much for bringing me this stuff. You’re seriously the best person ever,” she stood up with him, slipping on her knit hat again, and walked with him to the door, “And if you want to grab the stuff for tomorrow then go for it. Maybe I’ll have some of this homework done and you can turn it in for me if you’re up for it. But have a great night, Percy.” She opened up the door for him and flashed him a smile. They would definitely have to talk about the crush thing sooner than later, but she had to figure out how.
