Bo was tending bar. There was a lot of crazy stuff going on in her head and her heart lately, and she was glad to be able to check her personal problems at the door and focus on work. She was wiping down the bar where a patron had spilled a drink when a familiar face came into view.
Lara had had some trouble checking her personal problems out. Between her roommates being crazy, flying cats, impending formal function doom, and her best friend moving in with her, she needed a drink away from everyone. So she was back in Always, hoping for a drink, and to put Sam and her tits out of her mind.
She supposed she was better off than a few weeks ago. “Hey.” She grinned at Bo. “I’d like some more of that lager, and I ate first this time.”
Bo broke into a bright smile at the sight of the woman she’d somewhat befriended a couple weeks ago. “Lara, right?” And she rattled off the address. Hey, she had a memory for these sorts of things. “A pint of lager, comin’ right up.”
“Your memory is pretty good. You got it perfect.” Lara sidled onto the stool and gave Bo a grin.
Bo grinned. “I’m pretty good at remembering these things.” She passed the pint over, setting it in front of Lara. “How are you? Hopefully you weren’t too hung over the morning after.”
“Pretty bad. Had some…” She trailed off, ducking her head a little. “Never mind. I’m glad business seems to be booming for you.”
Bo raised an eyebrow. “Had some…? What? A good hangover cure?”
“Well, yes. And I think you gave me some ideas.” Like it was Bo’s fault that Lara had started looking at women more closely. “I don’t know what to do with those ideas.”
Bo chuckled softly. “Well, I like inspiring people. But let’s be plain. I think you’ve confused me a little.” She lifted her rag to wipe a wet spot on the bar.
Lara looked up at Bo, then at her lips, then at Bo again. “I think I might have a thing for my best mate, and I didn’t start considering that as an option until recently.”
Click. “Ohhhh.” Bo said, feeling quite flattered, now she’d figured out what was going on. She broke into a smile and even blushed a little. “I’m assuming that your best mate has…” breasts. “Two X chromosomes?”
"Uh, yes." She nodded, flushing a bit. "I'm not much of a dater. I swore the idea off a long time ago."
“I wish I could say it’s a lot easier to date women.” Bo said, softly. “But the truth of the matter is that dating anyone is hard. That’s why I don’t do it, either.”
Lara nodded. “See? You understand! But…” She took a sip of her drink. “I can’t get things out of my head. Well I can. I’m very good at tuning things out when I need to do my research or some work but then after that it comes back and I have to deal with it still. Which actually reminds me, I need a job, do you know anywhere around here that needs a bartender?”
“I’m sure there are loads of places looking for a bartender,” Bo said, waving her hand as if brushing that thought aside. “Tell me more about your best mate. Does she like you, too??”
“I’ll look around,” Lara replied, then blinked. “Well of course she does, we’re best mates.” She belatedly realized Bo’s meaning. “Oh. That kind of like. I don’t really know. She’s generally really affectionate to begin with. Always in my personal space. But she’s also a.. free spirit, when it comes to boys. I invested in ear plugs when we were living together.”
“Ah, I see. She’s never brought a girl home?” Bo asked, trying to be helpful.
Lara blushed. “If she has, either I wasn’t there to see it or I wasn’t paying attention. It’s probably just..conflicted emotions with the whole...thing and conflating them with someone I’ve very close to physically and emotionally.”
“Ah. Sounds… complicated.” Bo said, then leaned against the bar with a sigh. “How can I help?”
“I don’t know what I should do.” Lara didn’t want to mess up her friendship. “Maybe I should just ignore things and go back to the way they used to be. Complicated is why I don’t do dating. I love her, I can’t mess that up. And what if I’m not actually into women?”
“I don’t think I’m actually into men, or into women. But into people. I fall for a person, not a gender. Not a sex.” Bo had had male and female lovers and significant others in her day, and even some whose sexual identity was confused or hidden. She just loved people. “But I understand. You don’t want to ruin your friendship. But what if there’s more there? What if you’re too scared to act, and miss out on something amazing?”
Lara looked down at her drink, like it might hold the answer to her questions. “I think I need to figure everything out first. But I like puzzles, and I like solving them.” And Sam was a puzzle she particularly enjoyed. “I’m sorry, I really shouldn’t lay this on you.”
“Hey, it’s no problem. I like the idea that you’re coming to me with this. It’s good for both of us.” Bo gave her new friend a smile. “I want to be able to help.”
“How are things going with you? I’m being rude.” Lara smiled and took a sip.
“Meh, it’s okay. I’m just working. No big deal.” Bo gave her friend a wink, then stood up a little straighter. “Speaking of which, I should probably at least look like I’m doing something productive.” She got out her rag and wiped down the counter in front of Lara for the hundredth time.
Lara actually giggled, and tucked some hair behind behind her ear. “You look so very busy.”
“See? Mirage complete.” Bo said, breaking into a grin. She couldn’t help but notice how pretty Lara looked as she tucked her hair away. It was very… girly.
“Maybe you should try harder, clean a glass or something,” she joked, then held out her glass. “And pour me one more.”
Bo laughed. She accepted the glass, gave a grin and a nod, then turned to pour Lara one more.
“Thanks, Bo.” She toasted her and then took a sip. She’d always been open minded, it was practically a requirement for her chosen profession. She just never expected to be open minded about herself.
Bo gave her friend a smile. “Cheers.” She said, then was called off down the bar to help another customer.
Lara watched her go, eyes trailing down to Bo’s rear end. She swallowed, then guzzled her lager. This was going to be a hard adjustment.
