Sam had collected the keys from Darcy and brought in some of her and Jane’s things. She had managed to convince Darcy to go and get something to eat and drink while she watched over Jane for a while.
Sitting in one of the chairs by the young girls bed she was reading the latest Physics Review magazine, the doctors had said they were observing her but the toxicology had cleared her of life threatening infection. Sam just hoped she would start to recover soon.
Jane slowly woke up in a haze of painkillers. In truth, she was grateful to be waking up at all, even with an oxygen tube over her face and cannulas in the back of her hands. She turned her head to look for a glass of water and instead of finding Darcy, she was met with the face of her Professor sat in the chair next to her bed. “Professor...wha...what are you doing here?” she asked groggily.
Looking up Sam smiled softly, “Oh Jane, you’re awake” she said, “I told Darcy to get something to eat while I watched over you. Do you need anything?” she asked.
“Oh...uh, a glass of water, please,” Jane asked, frowning as she tried to sit up in bed. “Thanks for looking after Darcy for me she’s...worried,” Jane told her.
Sam stood and poured Jane a glass of water before handing it carefully to her, “It’s not a problem, I’m glad I could help. She’s not the only one who was worried you know” Sam smiled softly.
"I...sorry," Jane apologised, accepting the glass from her with a shy smile. "How did you know I was here?"
“It’s not your fault” Sam assured her, “Oh well I saw Darcy post on the net and then offered to help out. I collected some things for you both from your place and wanted to see how you were” she explained.
“Wow,” Jane smiled as she put her glass down on the side table. “Thank you, so much,” Jane didn’t quite know what to say, she knew they were friendly, but this was almost like they were friends. She liked that idea. “It means a lot, I know how busy you are with the start of school and everything.”
“It’s not a problem” Sam told her, “I couldn’t have focused on anything knowing you were in here. It’s good to see you awake Jane, as reassuring as the doctors are it’s much better being able to see for yourself. I know Darcy will be very happy to see that you’re okay”
"Yeah, well hopefully I can get out of here soon to prove it some more," Jane grumbled. "The food's crap and I haven't finished writing my paper up," she smiled crookedly. "I don't suppose Darcy asked you to bring my laptop did she?" she asked hopefully.
“She didn’t” Sam said, “But I picked it up anyway. Just in case. But I don’t want to hear that you aren’t recovering as you should be because you’re working too much” she lectured before retrieving the laptop from the bag she had packed for Jane and placing it on the bedside trolley.
"Thank you!" Jane grinned excitedly, sending her into a coughing fit. She reached blindly for the water.
“See that’s what I mean” Sam said as she picked up the glass and handed it to Jane, rubbing her back as she did so. “You have to take it easy, nothing is more important than getting better Jane”
Jane drank from the glass gratefully. "I can't help it, science excites me," she quipped, settling back against the pillows and feeling more than she had before the coughing. "I think I'll leave working for tonight though," she joked weakly.
“Oh I understand that sentiment” Sam told her, “I think that’s probably a good idea. You’ll get me in trouble with Darcy otherwise” she added with a grin.
“Couldn’t have that!” Jane joked, trying not to laugh too much. “You’ve not seen her on no sleep and no coffee,” she grinned.
“Shudder at the thought” Sam said, “I sent her off for food and drink and now I’m even more thankful I did” she smiled.
Jane grinned as she re-settled herself in the bed with some effort. “Oh, did you get all the work I left on your desk in the lecture room?” she asked.
“I did, thank you” Sam said, sitting back herself now that Jane seemed to be okay, “You really didn’t have to do it all so quickly you know? I’m fully aware of how competent you are”
“It wasn’t to prove anything…” Jane looked up at her Professor as she started to defend herself. “Ok, so it kind of was, but I knew you needed it to plan lessons and everything,” she sighed. “Good thing too considering I landed myself in here,” she said quietly. “Do they um...do they know what these rocks are? Why they effect us?”
“Relax Jane, I’m teasing you. Don’t forget I was a lot like you so I know how you work, generally” she grinned. “Not so far. There are theories of course” she said, “But nobody has claimed to know anything concrete”
Jane nodded sadly, eyes cast down, before asking her next question, “Do they know if the effects are...temporary?”
Sam placed her hand over Jane’s, “Again there are theories. But with the history of things in this county it’s most likely that it will be”
Jane nodded and gave Sam a forced smile. “That’s good...I doubt they’d look kindly on patients using the centrifuge for experiments and I doubt they can fit the particle accelerator in this room,” she joked to cover her worry.
“They definitely can’t fit that thing in here” Sam told her, “But they won’t need to because you are going to be fine” she added positively.
"Thanks," Jane smiled at Professor Carter, then yawned a little. "Don't suppose I could ask another teensy favour of you?"
“Of course” Sam replied, “Just name it”
"Would you mind getting me a sudoku puzzle book? There's money in my bag...wherever that got put," Jane tried to look over the sides of her bed for it.
“Don’t worry about that” Sam said, stopping Jane with a hand on her arm, “I’ll just pop to the hospital shop. Won’t be long” she promised as she rose from her chair, “Anything else you want?” she asked.
"No I'm good, thank you," Jane smiled at her. "Oh, maybe a pen as well, please?"
Sam smiled, “Of course” she nodded, “I’ll be back soon” she said as she headed out, though she had a feeling Jane would be asleep once again when she returned.
