There were few doctors Magius trusted so much as Faiza, and so, stuck in the hospital, he asked if she had time to look at his charts, for her opinion, nothing more. He had heard of her loss of power, but he knew her as a great doctor long before she had powers. And he trusted her knowledge and skills. So he asked for her, when she had time, and in the meantime started getting used to the idea he would need glasses from now on.
Faiza had driven down as soon as she’d had a free moment. Or several free moments. There hasn’t been much to do, the ranch had avoided most of the problems. Except the squirrel but that had been taken care of.
“Doctor. How are things going?”
“Well, better than before, Doctor.” He smiled to her. She was a sight for sore eyes. Literally.
“Thanks to some talented doctors and EMTs, anyway.” He knew from his charts he would have died, multiple times over, and was rather relieved not to. Despite his 66 years, he was not ready to die.
“How are you?”
“Better than I should be. It’s a little annoying not being able to pull someone apart, but I’m really glad I was able to keep my normal skills up to par.” She’d always tried to do medicine the normal way.
“I know what you mean. Had my magic not been flopped into someone else by this weird event, I would have been far less injured and able to defend myself, as well as handle more patients.” He smiled ruefully. “And I wish your skills were around myself. I am not looking forward to the recuperation time for multiple broken ribs and a concussion, and bruises everywhere.” Not to mention massive blood loss. Meh.
“This has definitely been an annoying set of days.”
“What exactly happened?” She sat next to him, giving him a not-so-subtle checkup.
“Well, to start with, my powers got shifted to another by the week’s weirdness, and then this morning, some robbers who knew my normal schedule and expected me to be gone hit my house, looking for stuff to steal, I was less than cooperative, so they hit me and stabbed me and kicked me a few times, and made off with the things they could grab quickest.”
Some books and antiques, and not much else, mind you, but those things had been worth thousands and thousands.
She narrowed her eyes. “Could you give me a description, I know a couple of people who might be willing to track down those hooligans.” Hooligans? Oh Faiza. “You seem to have come out of it non the worse for wear.”
He gave her a rather precise description of the books, especially the more valuable and dangerous ones.
“If I were less active, I’d probably have died, and if people hadn’t been there, I would have for sure. I was lucky, and damn well won’t take anything for granted from this.”
“I’m sorry someone did this to you. It’s really rotten luck and a terrible thing. I’ll ask my friends to look out for the books, and the perps.” Faiza sounded almost personally offended. Who attacks a doctor?! “You need to rest. Is there anything I can do for you?”
“Actually, yes. See if you can find one Huck Finn and make sure he is okay. He is the one whom the weirdness gave my magic to, and I fear he is in as much danger as I was.” Magic drew conflict, as sure as it created hope.
“I’ll look for him.” She wasn’t sure where to start, but she’d figure it out. “I suppose I can look for any wild, unrestrained magic. I’m somewhat experienced with that.”
“Thank you. He’s on the Valarnet, too, so maybe there. I’m not sure.” He lay back, tired even form a few minutes of talking. “The worst part is how much endurance getting hurt took from me. I can barely keep my eyes open and my head raised for a few moments, now.” He shivered.
“I don’t like feeling helpless.”
“Part of that is the drugs. I know it’s terrible to feel helpless, but it’s a little better than being in more pain,” Faiza said, gently. Her voice turned gently teasing. “I suppose doctors are the absolute worst patients, though.”
“We are,. generally.” He smiled to her, shivering. “You’re right.” He chuckled to her. “Thank you. I’d appreciate it if you kept an eye on my charts when you had the time. I know you’re busy,” He trusted her, it was as simple as that, and for a man suddenly laid low, trust was something needed, and precious.
“Any time. I’ve got a bit more free time now, we have another volunteer for the ranch.” She took his hand and rubbed it lightly.
Magius squeezed hers and smiled. “Thank you.”
He nodded, resting. “I won’t take too much of your time, but thank you for being here. And for looking into things. I appreciate it.”
Faiza smiled. “A little bit of time is no harm at all.”
“Thanks again.” He nodded. “Its nice knowing even a doctor has another doctor to be around when they need them.” He poked her lightly, eyes warm.
“Oh yes. We often feel like we’re invincible!” She wriggled her fingers and looked at them. “I feel lesser. But I’ll adjust. Just hopefully not for too long.
“Very true! I was getting there, I admit, with magic and medicine both in my hands.” He chuckled. “I’ve been lain low, and hope to learn from it.” He nodded to her. “I look forward to seeing you back in fighting trim any day now, doc. “
“Even at the worse, I shall heal. I took an oath.” She smiled, putting a hand over her heart. “I’ll just have to work it the old fashioned way, duck.”
“You will. And we did, true.” He smiled at her. “Somehow, we’ll get through things. And after all of this we’ll get some Irish Coffee together and laugh about it, but not too loudly.”
He nodded, then lay back more, closing his eyes. “Sorry to do this, but I think I need to rest again. Still recovering a lot from this mess.”
“Then I’ll let you rest, and try to get in contact with Huck for you.” She got to her feet.
“Thank you, Faiza. Be good to you.”
He smiled to her before closing his eyes again.
