“Oh for the love of… stop that.” Nate snatched the latest phone his mother had gotten out of her hand and poked her. “Until you are better, you need to not be on the net.” He grumbled at her with love in his eyes. “Please? For yourself and your baby, please stop this.” He saw her agitation and her annoyance with people, could feel it, even if his powers were haywire.
He rubbed his head. With how things were, sometimes his shields were nonexistent here.
“Please. Just rest.”
Emma huffed. “I’m bored and cranky. The Internet is the only interesting thing I have while you and Scott are in the bathroom or eating.” She was barely sleeping, barely able to sleep. The constant discomfort of the dialysis machines and the drugs, coupled with the quiet in her head were irritating her to the point where she could only take quick naps.
“Then at least no Valarnet for you.” He shook his head. “You need to relax and stop talking to people who will irritate you, as much as you can, anyway.” He sympathized, and he wished he could help more.
“The world is full of people that irritate me.” Emma noted dramatically.
“I’m sorry, mom.” He sighed and settled at her bedside. “It seems like its easier to get irritated when you’re sick, as well.” He smiled softly to her. “But you won't be sick forever, and I will help them find a way to help you.”
Emma stroked his hair softly. “I know. I’m sorry. I just hate being bored.” She took off the glasses, sighing a little as the minds around her filtered back in. “The treatment makes me feel good enough to do things, but there’s not much I can actually do. I can’t even maintain control of my telepathy for that long. I’m not used to the quiet anymore.”
Nate nodded. “I know the feeling. Mine is on, but it goes from being very loud to being utterly quiet and every length inbetween. “ He rubbed his face, and smiled faintly. “Everyone is having one hell of a week. Cora has telepathy and no training, and Doc Magius is in here somewhere, got mugged after his powers slipped away. Match is sicker than you, and Zach Jupiter is almost as sick. Lorna got split into good and evil halves, and her evil half was killed, and Neena went super paranoid and even passed out from it.” He blew out a long breath of air. “Seems like the whole county is going nuts.”
“Here.” Emma said, handing him the glasses. “These will block it out when it’s overwhelming. I can turn to diamond if it becomes too much, and your powers are much stronger than mine.” It was the only thing she could really do. “I’d suggest bringing Cora here, but God knows that’s a horrible idea. If anyone is capable of helping her it’s you. The others will be fine on their own, things will likely return to normal when this is over.”
He poked her. “You need these. You can’t turn to diamond while on dialysis and I can retreat to Greymalkin if it gets too much.” He nodded at the rest. “Very true., Though this may spark a few events itself. Not sure.” He felt like this was not… going to just go away.
“I can, it’s not like I’ll notice that I don’t have some of my blood. This is the only damn thing I can do for anyone, so take the glasses and say thank you.” Emma didn’t mean to yell, but she felt so helpless, and this was more important to her than it would normally be.
Nate winced and then nodded. “Yes, mom.” He took them, leaned in and kissed her cheek. “Thank you. I love you.,” And he hugged her, tight.
She kissed him back, taking a deep breath. “I love you too. Your sister’s moving. I can feel her now.” She took one of Nate’s hands and rested it right above where the baby was kicking.
He gently stroked the belly and felt it, grinning. “Hello, little sister. It’ll be my job to protect and torment you for years to come. Can’t wait to see you so I can get started. Just you wait. Life is going to be fun!”
Emma laughed, wondering if the baby could hear and understand him. “I can’t reach her telepathically. Which is just as well. It makes me worry, sometimes.” She stroked her belly as well, hoping the little life inside would know how loved she was, and have a happy, if not normal, life.
“When this whatever it is fades, or I train myself past it, I’ll try,” He smiled at her. “She will be a well loved child.” He knew that for sure.
Emma smiled softly. “You’re loved too, even if your father has difficulty articulating it.” She squeezed his arm. “And I love you too, as much as I would any son I had in the more usual manner.”
Nate smiled lopsidedly. “I know. Even if I get frustrated with the big lug.” He leaned forward and kissed her forehead. “Can I have some allowance?” His eyes were twinkling as he teased her.
Then he smiled softly. “Cora and I are getting closer. We’re still abiding by the rule. No physical crossing the lines, not until she is 18 or emancipated, but… yes.” He spoke softly. “I love her.”
Emma sighed. “I won’t tell you no. It’s just very sudden. I know we don’t really have room to talk in that regard, but you’ve both gone through so many changes so quickly. Maybe you should try taking this one thing slow?”
“Well, except for me and her it’s not sudden. I’ve been friends with her since before the travel into the future, since before I even dreamed the first time. Since before learning of my father and your relationship to him. She was there for me in a lot of ways as no one ever has been, When I was ten and eighteen, and now 27.” He smiled sadly, softly.
“Somehow, she and I just click, and connect, and… I dunno, maybe it is fast, but we aren’t going to do anything, you know. Not for years. She has to grow into her new age, and I need to figure out where I belong as a person.” He smiled wryly.
“We will walk the path slowly, but I think in many ways we already found our answer.”
Emma sighed softly. “Your father is going to cry. You know that, right?” Well, inside, at least. “Not that you should let either of us stop you from pursuing happiness. I’ll take her out jewelry shopping if you like, to help her organize her mind after her telepathic experience. That way she can get straightened out and I can get her ring size and preferences.”
“Probably. yes.” He sighed. “But then he cries if I talk about college.” Nate had little tolerance for that, really. He loved his dad, but he was hoping someday before he died he would get his head out of his ass and treat Nate like the equal he was as a person.
“Sounds good to me! She’s up on Greymalkin right now, so when you feel better, y’all can talk.” He smiled to her.
“You all.” Emma corrected, rolling her eyes. She wished Scott would react better to the things Nate was going through, but she knew that was not going to happen for a while. “I’ll be happy to do that. You should talk to her parents as a courtesy, since she is underage.”
“I know. I will, I promise.” He smiled lopsidedly. He had to do that, for sure.
He just had to take the time to do so, soon.
Emma squeezed his arm. “We’ll need to get a suit made for you.”
Nate blinked. “Huh? I have a suit… what are you talking about?”
“Not a work suit. A dressy suit for dressy things. Like weddings.” Emma nodded, looking very intently at Nate.
Nate blinked, then facepalmed. “Mom! We are not getting married anytime soon! She’s not ready,, and I’ not ready, and there is at least a two year gap until that happens!” He waved a hand at her. “So put those wedding planning brains of yours away.”
“I need something to distract myself.” Emma noted dramatically.
Nate squinted at her, then grinned. “Okay fine. Plan away. I’ll send you my contacts list. Neena and Thomas will be my best couple, and Tessa and Toph can round out my groomspeople. THe Mallorys and the Summers are not huge families, thankfully. So we can work on making sure that everyone is easily slotted to a good place.” He nodded. Then hmmed. “Aim for, say, two years out. That should give us time to get things fully set up, plus repel any apocalypses along the way.”
“I think that sounds wonderful.” Emma said with a soft smile. “Though Cora may want to claim her uncle as part of her party. You should get married in the winter, gowns with sleeves are so lovely.” She smiled softly. “I hope it works out the way you’re hoping, Nate. You deserve so much happiness, and you’ve received so little.”
“I hope so too. And it’s going pretty well now. “ He settled back on his chair. “I just want people to be happy. And so many people seem to make that so hard.” He shook his head. “In either case, I think life will be okay, somehow.”
“I hope so.” Emma replied. “I’m tired of this crap.”
