"I don't know about other people, but I learned to read music because I wanted to be a conductor." On more than one occasion Jem had wished that he could play an instrument of his own, but for whatever reason he simply couldn't play, which did seem odd considering he was able to read music. Either way, he was working towards something he enjoyed doing, so he wasn't too upset about it.

"That's impressive. What other languages can you speak?" Jem was only able to speak one other language, which was Mandarin since his mother was Chinese.
