WHO: Cora, Billy
WHAT: powers gained, powers lost
WHEN: during the kryptonite plot
WHERE: Cora's kitchen
WARNINGS: n/a
Billy had been worried about his friends in this mess, so when he talked to Cora, he made plans to go to her house. He wanted to reassure her, his strong friend, and to give her a hug, and some cookies he had baked. Because… cookies.
And he was dealing with his own craziness. He had lost his powers, completely. And it was odd, but he missed them. Nonetheless, he had cookies to deliver, and he would do so, darn it!
Yes?
So he drove to her place, and then parked his scooter, and smiled as he walked to the door, knocking.
Cora was bouncing to the door while Billy was still coming up the walk, turning the doorknob even as he knocked. She was all smiles, in spite of the effort it took her to manage her newly developed psychic shields, and she opened her arms to offer her friend a big hug.
“Hi!”
Billy laughed and then hugged her tight, kissing her hair and grinning. “HI! How are you, bouncy beauty?”
He grinned wider and bounced a bit himself.
She blushed, and giggled, and smiled up at him. "I'm okay." She was happy, her confidence riding high in the wake of her glimpse into Nate's world. Having him project his feelings to her was good, but being able to see for herself? There was nothing like it. "I know some people are having a hard time though. I wish I could help more, but I have to work hard or I wind up trying to take in everything at once."
Billy smiled at her. “I lost my powers but really, I don’t feel that let down. They aren’t who I am.” He hugged her again, then grinned. “Are you ready for school starting?”
Cora shook her head. “Just when I start to get over my fear of thinking everyone is going to be talking about me behind my back, I get the ability to find out exactly what they are talking about,” she said, “And I’m pretty sure I don’t wanna know, even if they aren’t talking about me!”
“I hope you’re getting help to not hear them.” He cared about Cora and didn’t mind if she heard his thoughts, but he had heard and seen telepaths in his dreams have trouble.
“I am.” Nate had shown her what he could, and her mom and dad knew about shielding from psychic assault too. Not that anyone was actually trying to beat their way into her mind, thank goodness, but the principles seemed to work. She hadn’t resorted to a tinfoil hat yet, but that might be an option as well. “I think I’ll be okay.”
“Good.” He dug in his bag and brought out an aluminum foil package and held it out. Inside were brownies. “I made you something.”
“You’re awesome,” she said, accepting the goodies and giving him another hug in return. “Do you want something to drink? You don’t have to rush off and deliver more baked goods, right?” Yeah, she was still very much a kid at heart, begging for her friends to be able to stay just five more minutes.
“Sure. I’d love some chocolate milk if you have it?” He smiled at her. “Nah. I’ve got nowhere to be until later tonight.” He enjoyed hanging out with Cora.
"I always have chocolate milk,"she said, "and if I don't, I know how to make it. As long as there is milk and chocolate to be had, they can be had together!" She twirled, and pirouetted toward the kitchen. "Make yourself at home!"
Billy bounced after her and grinned, following with a happy hum. “When I’m with you, that’s always easy, Cora.” She was a friend who made him absolutely comfortable, and utterly unselfconscious of anything else. “How have you been?”
"Good." She got the fixings for chocolate milk, and perched on a stool at the breakfast bar to mix up two glasses. She liked the comfortable friendship they had grown into. "I've been trying to make friends on the network. There are some people who go to our school, and some who don't but are close to our age." Or at least their physical age. "I still feel weird sometimes, but they kinda get it.".
He settled onto another one. “Sometimes all you can do is sort of get it. We all are different, and even when we truly understand what another is saying, we aren’t them. We can’t live it.” He gently squeezed one of her hands for a moment. “I’m just glad you’ve found friends and people to be around. I know this has been a wild adjustment for you.”
She still trusted Nate and Billy the most, because they'd known her the longest, and she them. They got it best, but she was becoming less nervous of branching out. She passed a glass to Billy, and smiled as she squeezed his hand. "I'm glad I've had you to help.".
Billy smiled and hugged her again, then grinned, and took the glass. He raised it to her, smiling softly. “To friends, and to helping each other, no matter what happens.” He toasted herl then drank.
“How’re your parents doing amongst all of this?”
Cora clinked her glass with his, drinking deeply enough to give herself a chocolate mustache--which she quickly wiped off with a napkin. “I know they miss their little girl, especially my dad. But they’re so amazing. My grandparents, too, on my mom’s side. They know all about the weird.” She sighed. “My step-dad took it pretty well, but we’re not as close anymore as when I was little. I kinda feel bad about it, but I don’t know what to do.”
Billy laughed at the mustache, but soon had one of his own and stuck out his tongue at her, grinning. “Yeah. Miss Mallory’s always been pretty awesome.” He smiled a little at her. “Sometimes you just have to be there for people. Hopefully they can understand in time.”
Cora nodded, setting her glass down and resting her elbows on the counter. “Yeah. And even if they don’t...you just keep on loving them anyway.”
