WHO: Tessa, Magius
WHAT: Emergency
WHEN: Wednesday morning, late, 09/11
WHERE: Magius'
WARNINGS: mentions of violence, blood, character injury
It had been a long day and night, that first day of the new OC madness, and Magius had been moving for most of it. After the incident in losing his powers, his day was still not done, and he came home late and had a reunion with Luisa, then saw her off to a meeting early, before going back to bed. When he went out to brush his horse, he wandered back toward the house, only then hearing the sound of something breaking.
As he came around the side of the house, he froze, as did three men in dark suits and masks.
“Shit! He was supposed to be at work! Get him!” And the men swarmed toward him. For a moment, forgetting he had no magic, he attempted to cast a spell and it’s failure reminded him of how he no longer had that resource,. in time for the men to swarm him for sure. He put up a good fight, spry and muscled for his age, with the arms of a metalsmith and the energy of a man who ran and exercised every day.
His defiance angered his robbers and his brief battle was ended when one stuck a knife in him. He fell to the Earth, pain blossoming on top of his already bruised body.
The men left quickly, then, having no stomach for a murder charge, obviously, and Magius, fumbling his hands into his pockets, pulled out his cell phone, dialing with trembling fingers as the world seemed to go grey.
9-1-1 seemed to take a long time to dial and a longer time to answer.
“Hello. Please state the nature of your emergency…” And he remembered no more.
When dispatch got a call, but no response to their questions, they sent everything. Police. Ambulance. Fire. Tessa was on the ambulance, and she recognized the address at once. It was all she could do not to slip her skin and try to beat the team there--but the last thing Magius needed was for her crew to stop and try to deal with whatever happened to her body when her Shen went wandering.
As soon as the ambulance arrived, she leaped out, followed by her partners, and scanned the area, calling the doctor’s name. She didn’t have to see his body lying on the ground to know that he was the one in trouble. She could feel it.
Magius had managed to drag himself, during bouts of consciousness, forward, around the house some. So one of the EMTs quickly spotted him, calling out. He had multiple stab wounds, signs of a head blow, and bruises and contusions everywhere, his shirt torn and his blood in a trail to where he had fallen. He was now, very out of it.
After making sure that none of his attackers remained in the immediate area, Tessa knelt, checking his pulse and respiration. As much as it angered her that someone had attacked her dear friend, she couldn’t afford to think like that right now. The police could search for the culprits; she had to make sure that her patient was stable.
“Get me a cervical collar,” she said to one of her partners. To the other, she said, “Help me stop the bleeding.” They would probably need to start an IV, and prep for a transfusion, but first things first.
Magius was incoherent when he did start to wake and his hand went up, looking for anything to grab. “Danger! Luisa, there are enemies in the house--!” And then he collapsed again. His heart rate was thready and he was shivering now, sliding into shock at the amount of blood loss he had reached, and the way his body had dragged had gotten dirt in the main stab wound.
Tessa snapped open a thermal blanket, wrapping it around Magius’ body. “Stay with me, doc,” she said, working to stabilize his temperature, and stem the blood-flow. The other members of her crew worked with her like one organism, but it was still tempting to try and stop time so they could somehow work faster.
Slowly his temperature stopped flaring, and his bleeding was stemmed, and he was hooked up to blood. His heartbeat slowly normalized, his ribs and neck and arms were taped down and restrained, and he was, finally, stable enough to move.
Once they had him in the back of the ambulance, Tessa fitted the man with an oxygen mask, and began to assess the lesser of his injuries. She started an antibiotic to ward off infection from the knife wounds, which would need to be cleaned and sutured; and applied cold compresses to the worst of the contusions, to keep the swelling down and check for fractures. "We're on our way to the emergency room now," she told him, whether or not he was lucid. "You're going to be all right."
Once in emergency, he was quickly rolled in for exploratory and examinations. It would take an hour to completely get him out of danger, but the work Tessa’s team had done was what made the difference, and he knew it by the time he was completely lucid some hours and a half later. He passed the word then to ask her to come by when she was next in the building, not knowing how busy she was today. He felt strong, despite the tubes attached to him, and the weariness of pain medication making him wheee.
When she heard that Magius was asking for her, Tessa made a point to stop by his room on the first break she got. She gave a soft knock before she entered, smiling softly when she saw how much improved he appeared. “Hey,” she said, “How are you feeling?”
Magius looked up from rubbing his face and slid the temporary specs on and smiled. “A lot better, thanks to you, old friend.” He smiled warmly. His little experience with getting hit in the face and head had caused one serious consequence. It seemed he would now need specs most of the time.
“Thank you, very much, for saving my life.”
“You’re welcome,” she said softly, moving to sit beside the bed. “It’s...kinda what I do.” It had been scary, working on someone she actually knew. Not that it wasn’t scary every time she held somebody’s life in her hands, but it was so good to see him sitting up, alert; out of the woods. It was these moments that kept her going. “Do the police have any leads on the guys who did it?”
“A group of house robbers they’ve seen before apparently. They got a few leads, and are chasing them down, but… I am worried. These guys snatch antiques and I had several… spell books out. Obviously antique and obviously expensive.” He shook his head. “Such items in the public hands could cause untold problems.”
She nodded. If the robbers had taken the books, someone would need to make sure they were caught before they had a chance to fence the books; and that the books were returned. “If I could find you a wizard who still has his powers,” she asked, “Could the books be traced?”
“Maybe. They have protections, unfortunately. I’m not sure if they can even be tracked by any means.” He blew out air. “A downside to security.”
Tessa hmmd. "If you find anything else missing, perhaps we could trace that to the culprits instead." And hopefully they would have the books close at hand. "In the meantime, just try and take it easy. You are still more important than any grimoire, and I'm sure I'm not the only one who feels that way."
Magius nodded, smiling softly. He relaxed back, still hurting, and felt a little blush creep up his cheeks. “Thank you, Tessa., I think I will relax, actually…”
She smiled back, and gave his hand a parting squeeze. “I’d better get back to my rounds, but I’ll stop by again later. You be good.”
