By the time Sunday evening rolled around Padmé felt like she had lived a thousand lives. She had practically forgotten about her run in with Anakin Skywalker due to the Jedi powers that developed and her parents coming to visit. The visit from her parents had been quite welcomed though and she was glad to see them even though they left so quickly. It wasn’t until she accidentally Force pushed her purse off the kitchen table that she remembered Anakin. She was cleaning up the mess of things that had fallen out and her eyes landed on the white business card once more. Curiosity was killing her and she wanted to find more out about him and see if he was that guy from her dreams. That curiosity lead to her sitting on her couch with her phone as she finally composed a text message to him.
’Have you tried any new vegetables lately or is your diet still severely lacking in proper nutrients? I thought I heard some squash crying when I walked by them in the supermarket earler.’ She pressed send and bit her lip as she tried to hide her smile as she set her phone on the coffee table and flipped on her tv.
Of course Anakin had made the mistake of leaving his phone in his pocket, set on vibrate. It wasn’t normally an issue as he wasn’t called all that often in the evening, but tonight was gaming night and he had been lost in Minecraft for so long his eyes had started to un-focus whenever he looked at anything aside from his laptop. He had been mining when the sun went down and while sprinting back to his cobblestone box of a home he fell down a hole only to turn and be confronted by an Enderman appearing from nowhere the same time his phone went off. He jumped about a foot, nearly ripping his cord from the wall, then quickly hit escape so he could start breathing again and tend to the message. He grinned, knowing it was from Padmé.
’I eat vegetables in the games I play, does that count? And you’re clearly falling behind on your duty to rescue all lonely squash everywhere.’
While she waited for a response to her text message she had flipped through the channels numerous times until finally landing on Food Network. An episode of Chopped was on and she couldn’t help but become immediately engrossed. How people could be given a basket containing random items and make a delicious meal was like magic and Padmé wished her own skills were like that. It didn’t hurt that one of the items was a squash and she had let out a loud laugh the moment it was pulled out of the basket. During her laughter she heard her phone and reached down to read the text before hastily replying.
’Games? Like video games? Of course that doesn’t count. It’s not going to help you grow up big and strong if it’s virtual, duh. And it is not my duty to rescue them all. I don’t want to fill my apartment with squash. I think I only need to rescue one and drop it off with you.’
’I’m nearly 6’3”, getting big and strong isn’t really a problem for me. And that’s not a rescue, that’s like, execution by starvation, it’ll sit in my fridge until it withers away and grows moldy and I have to toss it out.'
’Is this your way of saying that if I save a squash I have to come over to your place and cook it for you in order for it to be a proper rescue? Because you’re going to have to grow up sometime and cook a squash by yourself. Put those big boy, vegetable-eating, pants on.’
’Forget the vegetables, you said something about coming over to my place. Let’s talk about that a little more.’
`You would pick up on that, wouldn't you? Let's not talk about that more because it's not going to happen anytime soon.`
’Soon is relative, so it might be sooner than you think.’
`Has anyone told you that you are annoying today? Because I think you need to know about that.`
’I kinda doubt that since you’re still texting me.’
Padme let out an amused snort as she rolled her eyes. She had to admit he was probably right about that one and had no clever way to refute his observation. Fortunately the tv was making her hungry so she got up to go to the kitchen to make something to eat.
`Well unfortunately for you I am going to cook dinner and ignore you.`
'You really do enjoy teasing me, don’t you? But at least you’ll be giving whatever poor squash you eat exactly what it wants.'
That earned a laugh as she started to putz around her kitchen and get things together. She was making something fairly simple so she turned up the tv and listened to it. She couldn't help but let her mind wander to think about Anakin, which apparently he must have felt because suddenly her phone was ringing. She was stirring a pot so she reached over and hit answer and put it on speaker phone without paying attention, "Hello?"
“How’s the squash coming?” He asked, flopping onto his couch with no real concern that the piece of furniture could take it. He would have left her be that evening if she hadn’t said she was going to ignore him, by saying that she was essentially daring him to keep trying to get her attention. He couldn’t help himself, he had always felt compelled to best any challenge set before him, but at least he had given her a little time to do whatever it was she was doing. Not that he was being considerate, he had simply been debating on whether to text her again or call her. “Did it go out like that weird anime clip where the potato peels and throws itself into the pot while the carrot and onions cry?”
“Oh….it’s you,” she commented with a smirk on her face as she finished stirring the pasta and moved to grab her bread out of the oven while she listened to him. Well, she hadn’t expected him to call her, but she couldn't say that she was incredibly annoyed by the fact that he did. The talk about the anime clip made her furrow her brow in confusion, “I have no idea what you’re talking about, but there’s no squash in my dinner tonight.”
“Well that’s just not right.” he chuckled softly. “You’re going to lose your title of squash guardian angel and then what will the squash do? They can’t rely on me, though if we can extend it to the drink then maybe I could accept that mantle.” Even he was starting to get tired of the word squash by now so he did his best to move the conversation on.
“So, I’m sorry if I’m bugging you- Actually, no, I’m not. You’re trying to ignore me and I’ve never let anybody get away with that before especially when they’re as entertaining as you are. So it’s really your fault, but it’s really nice to hear your voice again. I was worried you would lose my card.” That wasn't true of course, he fully expected to hear from her, but he was already pushing it with some of his other comments.
“Can we just stop talking about squash? To be honest, I don’t even like them that much,” she was speaking a little louder than usual as she went to the fridge and left the phone a few feet away. When she returned she pressed the button to turn off the speaker and placed the phone against her ear and shoulder to hold it in place. She listened to him and chuckled, “I’m not surprised you’re not sorry about that. You seem like the kind of guy that would just appear out of nowhere to bother a girl. And I actually forgot about your card until I knocked my purse over and it happened to land on top. Did you teach it that kind of trick?”
“Bother? It’s one thing for me to say it but for you to agree…” he sighed dramatically though it was impossible for anyone to be any more sarcastic. “I’m very hurt, really I am. But anyway, no, that wasn’t my influence, I just paid a little extra for the printer’s ‘special’ service where the card is specifically programmed to make itself noticed and to force its way to the top of piles, heaps and whatever thing it may find itself in.” he shifted on the couch, getting more comfortable. He wasn’t ready to give up on her yet, even if he was only restricted to phone contact. “I’m happy to hear that it really works, I may have to order more.”
“I don’t think anything could hurt that wall of narcissism that you have built up around you,” she commented as she turned off the stove now that the food was done cooking. She went to her cupboard to grab a plate and started to dish herself some food as she listened to him. She could hear him shifting on a couch and wondered what he was doing. Maybe she shouldn’t be bothered with what he was doing at the moment, but she had no idea what kind of things he did normally. When he mentioned buying more of those business cards she let out a soft chuckle, “Give them a nice tip next time. Maybe it’ll work out better for you with the next girl you try to pick up.”
“Ooh, we jumped over ego and pride and went right for narcissism, you don’t waste any time, do you?” he had to smile at that though, it wasn’t the first time someone had said something like that to him, though usually after he made a show of one of his many skills. “Not a bad idea, but I’m not entirely sure I can write off the last woman I approached just yet. I have a good sense about these sort of things, the better ones are worth the extra work of a second and third approach. I think it’s working because she seems intrigued in spite of herself, now all I have to do is keep making a fool of myself to keep her amused.”
“I feel so bad for that woman. So bad,” she teased as she clinked around her plates and made her way to the coffee table so she could watch tv while she ate. It wasn’t the greatest habit to have, but when you lived by yourself you really didn’t care after a while. But he had a couple right ideas because she was intrigued and she wasn’t completely sure why beside him being the Anakin Skywalker potentially, “And I’m pretty sure you’re quite good at making a fool of yourself.”
“Not really, but you’d be surprised at how much practice I get.” he smirked to himself, he tried hard not to be that guy who laughed at his own jokes and found himself endlessly amusing, but sometimes he found himself saying things that tickled him in just the right way. “Anyway, I can hear your clicking and clanking and whatever other sound effects are associated with plates and cutlery. I suppose I could be nice and leave you alone long enough to eat, though I think I deserve some sort of reward if I do.”
“Those are the basic sound effects that go along with it. But I do appreciate you respecting the need for a little privacy to eat. Besides, I don’t sound half as attractive when my mouth is full of food and I’m chugging some milk. But what kind of reward do you want?” This was going to be golden and she could feel herself smirking already with the possibility of what he could want. She set down her items on the table and leaned back against the couch as she waited.
“Let me take you out, just once. Anywhere you want, anything you want to do, any time. If it doesn’t go well and we discover that both of us are horrible and not worth seeing again then that’s it, I’ll leave you alone and promise to delete your number from my phone. Of course, if you say no to this deal I’m just going to keep coming back with it until I wear you down.” he slowly pushed himself to sit up in anticipation. “It’s not like I’m attempting emotional blackmail by hanging myself off a carnival ride and threatening to fall to my death if you say no, or anything. All in all I’m being very considerate.”
“I’ll think about it and get back to you on that one. How does that sound?” She knew it wasn’t a complete answer and probably not the one he was looking for, but she wasn’t sure what she wanted to do in regards to him. But it couldn’t hurt to at least go out on a ‘date’ with him could it? She wasn’t technically dating anyone even though she had been spending time with Sam quite a bit. She let out a small sigh, “That’s the best I can do right now. You can harass me if you want, but I’ll get back to you eventually.”
“No, none of that eventually. A day, or two or three at most. That’s all my poor little heart can take.” It really wasn’t what he wanted but he wasn’t going to pout or stop his feet and demand an answer that instant. He knew she wouldn’t keep talking to him if she wasn’t interested in some way, he just had to keep reminding himself that jumping through her hoops was worth it. “How does that sound? Or are you going to push me to a week?”
“We shall see. Have a lovely evening, Anakin,” she spoke softly and a hint of a smile in her voice. She probably wouldn’t try to be that mean, but she made no promises to anyone. Maybe she should try to get Obi-Wan to meet him before she agreed to go on any kind of date. He did have a charm about him that kept her interested and she knew she would fall for it eventually, but she wanted to try and fight it for now.
“Such a tease. Good night, Padmé, or rather have as good a night as you can without me.” of course he had to leave her with that, ending the call just after that. He was completely confident that she would eventually agree and probably find his persistence charming, but patience had never been one of his virtues. He would simply have to fill his hours with other things, hopefully he would find a way to keep his mind off her, though he doubted that was possible at this point.
