Shepard was feeling a little better. By a little she no longer felt like she had a month after the Crucible, so she was a little less than death warmed over.
And Dani had taken away her phone. That wasn’t fair. She gave her a tired, grumpy look.
"You're not resting when you're tapping around on your phone, flirting with teenagers on the internet," Dani commented, because she knew exactly what that grumpy look was all about.
She punctuated her remark by sticking her tongue out at Tyra, then shifted in her chair a bit, "You need to concentrate on not dying, that's definitely more important."
“She’s legal,” Shepard said, rolling her eyes. There’d been a lot of tension with her, and she mostly just wanted to work that out now that she was free to be able to. “I’m fine. I only feel mildly dead.”
"Being legal doesn't make her any less a teenager," Dani pointed out.
Though it was really none of her business who it was that Tyra slept with, honestly. She knew why the hell she cared so much, but since that was completely out of the question, she squashed her emotions and then mentally stomped on them a little too, for good measure.
"You're not fine. Your vitals say so," Dani pointed at the monitors nearby, "And if you were fine we'd all be somewhere else. Relaxing."
With a mai tai. A mai tai sounded really, really good right about now.
Shepard reached over for Dani’s hand and patted it a little bit. “Where do you want to go to relax? That little beach of Lara’s? That’s not a bad idea. Bet you’d look fantastic in a string bikini…” She smiled, “I’m fine. Been worse. Trust me.”
"I want to..." Dani frowned, and shook her head, "I don't really get much time to relax. I don't know how to, I mean my idea of downtime is sex, archery, and hitting the punching bag. I hardly ever use that private beach, though I moved in with Lara especially for it."
“I’m glad to help with two out of the three.” She kept patting at Dani’s hand, her eyes a little glazed from whatever the doctors had her on. Or the fever. Probably a little of both. “So when I get better, you’re going to show me that string bikini.”
"I guess we're going to have to buy one first, because I don't own a string bikini," Dani replied, patting Shepard's hand a bit in return. It was kind of impossible to have a serious discussion with the woman when she was in this state. How much would she remember when she was feeling better?
“Mm. I know this shop. The owner will know just the right color that goes with your skin…” She squeezed Dani’s hand. “You can get some sleep you know. Still be here in the morning, promise.” Truthfully, she liked having someone there when she woke up. This was the case when she wasn’t sick, but especially when she was. Shepard was having flashbacks to her recuperation. Just the thought of Reapers and being laid up for months while the strained and worried faces of her crew looked at her…
It made her pulse spike.
Dani wondered if the spike was caused by the thought of her in just the right color, or something that went unsaid. The two of them were great at not saying things.
Ironically she used to pride herself on how blunt she was. She shook her head, "I'm not going anywhere. Promises are cheap, no one should make them because life isn't under our control."
Shepard was terrible at saying things. Even to Liara. She looked over at Dani. “Yeah. But what if we need to hear those promises? Sometimes it’s nice to know someone’s willing to.”
"Then they should be promises we know we can keep," Dani whispered, softly, "Like I can promise you that I won't leave your side while you're in here until someone forcibly removes me or I need to get you a snack or pee. That's one that I know I can keep. But I can't promise to be here forever, because what if I die first? What if we discover we hate each other? What if Wrex kills me for trying anything? You just never know."
“Or sleep. You need to sleep too.” She poked her arm. “I wouldn’t ask you to be here forever. Sometimes that might be nice but then we’d want to strangle each other. Space is good.” She smiled at Dani, ruefully. “Or we’re just using each other.” She didn’t sound entirely convinced.
Was that really true? Dani wasn't even so sure, "We should probably discuss the merits of using each other over actually enjoying each other's company sometime. When you're out of here and a little more coherent."
Sleep did sound good, though. And she had a doctor and a sponsor telling her to go take a nap and get some rest, too. She wrinkled her nose a bit, then kicked her sandals off, "Wrex is coming over, I'll snuggle in bed with you until he shows up. Scooch over."
“Mm..” Shepard scootched over, moving so she could get an arm around Dani. She didn’t know how she felt about that discussion, only that it was a necessary discussion. A big part of her was enjoying being a sexual free agent. It was fun. But she really, really liked Dani too.
It was probably going to be an interesting one, considering both women's ideas about verbal communication. But it would have to wait. Dani curled in against Shepard, and it didn't take her that long to fall asleep afterward. She was completely exhausted.
Just don't tell Wrex and Faiza they were right.
