Magius was running around a lot today as more and more incidents came in. When he heard the call about Emma Summers, though, he sped himself even faster, using a teleport spell to arrive in the hospital a little while after she did. Once he knew what was going on, he ordered a panel of tests and then walked into her room, worried. He closed the door before taking a seat near her bed. “Hello, Mrs Summers.”
Emma was just getting settled. She felt worse now. The hospital was full of the injured and sick. Being around those minds with her telepathy was bad enough, but in her current, vulnerable position it was ten times as bad.
She looked up at Magius, her expression very sad. “Hello.”
“I see you are feeling rather bad. I come bearing gifts.” He held out a pair of glasses. “The glasses of Derkin. Which provide clear seeing, and also? Shield the mind from all intrusion.” He nodded to her. “In your current state, I thought you might need them.”
He paid attention to his clients.
“Your child is okay, first thing. Somehow. Secondly, you are not in good shape, but I will be damned if I let you get bad enough to need a really powerful spell this time.”
Emma nodded, taking the glasses without complaint. “That was very thoughtful of you.” The quiet was quite nice. “I apologize for interrupting your evening.”
“No worries. The entire day has been a rather crazy mix of events. Everything is weird. I’m heading out later. but I wanted to make sure you are well taken care of first. And I will be back and forth to check on you and the others.” He shook his head. “This is far worse than I thought. While most people affected are getting powers or having odd things happen, many are getting sick.’
Then he waved a hand. “Nonetheless. you are important, and you are going to be taken care of. I will find out what is causing this. Somehow.” He wasn’t really sure yet, but he would put some spells in place.
Emma nodded. “You said the baby’s fine, right? Does that mean you know what’s effecting me and can say for sure it’s not effecting the baby? Not even the fever?”
“I did, yes.” Magius smiled a little. “And yes, I do. Even though I do not know how, you have radiation poisoning, and despite the fact that it should have killed the baby, two samples tested vigorously have shown that your amniotic sac is completely radiation free.” He rubbed his face. “And yes, the fever would be dangerous, but somehow, again, the amniotic fluid is normal temperature. Something is keeping him or her safe, or… or the baby is somehow protecting itself.”
Emma’s expression fell, despite herself. She understood that the baby was okay, but knowing that it should be dead was still very upsetting. She hid her face in her hands, trying hard not to cry. “Good,” she eventually croaked, when she could speak again.
Magius rose and gently took one of her hands, squeezing gently. “It’s okay to cry, Emma. it’s okay.” He smiled softly at her and nodded. “We all are facing dark times, now and we can stand together, and help each other. I will not let you fall.” He smiled again.
She nodded, taking deep breaths. “So what do we do for radiation poisoning?”
“Dialysis, medicine, and transfusion, in addition to increased saline input. It means you won't be leaving the hospital for a few days.” At least.
She nodded, her hands resting on her belly. “And the baby? Will any of this hurt it?”
“Not the way I am going to do it.” He began to explain, in simple terms, the milder drugs and simpler ways he would do it.“I won’t let your child be hurt.” He nodded
“That’s all I care about.” Emma said with a shrug. If the baby was to survive she would as well, by default, and she was willing to suffer if it meant the child would be safer.
“Then I’ll have the dialysis and radiation specialists come in when you are ready and he can go over exactly how we do this. I’ll be with you and in charge of your case.” He nodded.
“Okay.” She nodded, trying to rally her brains. “Whatever you need to do.”
So he gently touched her shoulder, then headed out to set things up. When he came back there would be specialist and decisions to make, but for now, she had a moment to herself.
