Darcy had a mighty need for coffee. She’d been thinking about it for hours, and it was all she wanted. She wasn’t even really all that tired, it was just a craving for coffee. A latte to be more precise. Of course she had a bunch of things to do before she could get said coffee. Lots of different errands were run. The bank. The post office. All sorts of things. Now it was finally time to get some coffee.
She was in line when she thought she noticed a familiar redhead. “Roy?” she called. There was a kid with him, and she didn’t want to disturb him or something.
Roy had, had the day off, so he and Lian had run a few errands that he hadn’t gotten a chance to do before he’d started work. They only had one other thing left to do before they could go home, where Roy had promised Lian he’d watch a movie with her after dinner, when he decided he needed a coffee break and stopped into the cafe. He had just placed his order when he heard his name being called in a vaguely familiar voice and turned to see Darcy, the girl he’d met in the bar, a few people behind him and he smiled, “Hey. Come up here.” So what if the other two people got annoyed that he was inviting her to cut the line? Roy hadn’t paid just yet and he didn’t mind buying Darcy a coffee or whatever her choice of drink happened to be.
Hey she didn’t have any problem cutting in line. Though she hadn’t actually done it since she was in school. This was pretty much amusing though. Darcy ignored all the people that were giving her dirty looks and shuffled forward in line. “Hey thanks.” She told the barista lady what she wanted to drink and smiled at Roy. “Thanks. You know I used to work in one of these. And then I got ran over by a car and got fired. Not at the same time.”
Roy was a little amused by the other people in line as Darcy cut in front of them and reminded himself to tell Lian later that cutting in line wasn’t actually right. Unless you were letting a cute girl cut, but he would leave that part out. “You got hit by a car?” His eyes widened at that as he handed his debit card over to the barista.
Probably best not to let your kid do that until they knew better. Or something. Though maybe doing it while they were still young and cute was a good idea. She had probably done that when she was a kid. “Uh yeah.. it wasn’t that bad. I mean like .. I hurt my leg but mostly the dude made me drop my coffee. That fucker.”
Most parents probably would have reacted negatively towards someone who swore in front of their kids, but Roy had sworn in front of Lian more times than he could count and she knew better than to actually repeat anything that she heard, “That sucks. I’m glad you weren’t really hurt. Could have been a lot worse.” The barista set their drinks down on the counter and Roy as he handed Lian her smoothie, he realized that he hadn’t introduced them, “Oh, Darcy, this is my daughter Lian. The one I was talking about.” He glanced over at his daughter, at his side, “Lian, this is Darcy. She’s a friend of mine.” It was much better than saying she was a girl that he’d met in a bar.
Darcy could control her tongue. She just wasn’t thinking about it very much. As soon as she realized that she had sworn in front of the kid though, she looked sheepish and muttered a ‘sorry’ as best as she could. “Yeah it could have. I’m good though.” She took her coffee and took a sip. “Nice to meet you, Lian. Sorry that I’m using all of the bad words. I’ve got a potty mouth.” That was putting it mildly.
“It’s okay. She’s heard worse things from me. I know, I shouldn’t be swearing in front of her either, but sometimes it just slips out,” Lian rolled her eyes as she sipped her smoothie and listened to Roy talk to Darcy as he led them away from the counter so that they weren’t in other peoples’ way. “How’re you doing since we met? You seem more upbeat now.” He hoped she was doing better cause he hated seeing people upset. Especially pretty girls.
“If I had a kid, I’d be so screwed because I think all the kid would know was curse words.” Sad but true. Darcy was really bad at watching her mouth, but hopefully would be decent around Lian. She was amused though at her rolling her eyes. “Uh.. yeah I’m okay. Feeling better, I think.” She had decided to just suck it up and stop feeling sorry for herself. “How are you?”
Roy laughed and ruffled Lian’s hair even while she protested and tried to bat his hand away and not spill her smoothie at the same time, “She knows better than to repeat what she’s heard and usually calls me out on it.” As Roy spoke to Darcy, Lian moved to sit at the closest table, “And that’s great to hear.” Did he admit that he’d been wondering about her? “I’ve been pretty good. Got mostly settled in. Still trying to navigate the Huntington Beach Police Department.”
“That’s always good. Better just to ignore adults completely, kid. They don’t know what they’re talking about half the time.” More than half the time, but Darcy felt like being generous. “Thanks,” she said a little sheepishly. She didn’t want anyone to worry about her, but it was clear that everyone was worried about her. “Ah. I only know the police department from.. well you don’t want to know.”
“Well, not completely.” Roy smirked, “She does still need to listen when I tell her to clean her room and stuff.” He took a sip of his coffee then quirked a brow at her while Lian sat and drank her smoothie, perhaps a tad bit impatiently, “Did you get arrested?” Now that Darcy had brought it up, Roy was extremely curious.
Ah yes. The age old ‘clean your room’ schtick. Darcy remembered those days. She didn’t miss them at all. She took a sip of her own coffee and settled back. Poor Lian. Having to listen to adults. “Uh.. when I was young. I almost went to juvie. It was kind of awesome. I mean bad.. it was bad.”
Roy couldn’t help but laugh. The way Darcy was being honest then trying to switch it around to sound better in front of Lian was amusing and kind of adorable at the same time, “I want to ask you what you did, but that’s probably not the best idea right now,” He glanced over at Lian, smirking then back at Darcy, “Don’t need her getting ideas.” He was only joking of course. Lian was probably one of the most well behaved children he’d ever seen. She had her off moments, like all children did, but for the most part, Roy didn’t have to worry too much about his daughter.
She couldn’t help but smirk slightly, “Yeah you’re probably right. I could give you a bunch of stories about my time as a rebel.” Not that she wasn’t one now, but she didn’t go to jail or anything. “But one day when there’s less impressionable ears around, I’d be happy to delight you tales from my youth.” That was putting it lightly
“Well then I think that means we’re going to have to go out for dinner sometime,” Roy smirked, raising his brows slightly at Darcy. Some single parents didn’t date, let alone make dates in front of their children, but Roy had been in at least two relationships over the last few years, so it wasn’t likely to be weird for Lian.
“Uh well.. sure. Dinner’s okay.. platonic dinner. I’m .. seeing someone.” Though she never knew just how serious it was. And that she was bad at it and probably going to make Clint run in horror sometime. “But yeah that sounds like fun. Here..” she wrote down her number and handed it over.
Well that was slightly disappointing. Somehow Roy hadn’t expected Darcy to be seeing someone, but then again she was an attractive woman, so he shouldn’t have been surprised. “Alright. I’ll text you with the details soon.” He wrote down his own number then got to his feet, Lian following, “It was really nice to see you again, Darcy.” He might have been expecting to have a date, but at least he was still going to get to spend some more time with Darcy.
