Sometimes you just couldn’t sleep, and you must needed to breathe, and you needed to not bother people, so you just sort of stepped out and kept going. Such a night was tonight for Billy, and he had walked until he found the cafe, and when he realized it was a 24 hour cafe, and next to a shopping center store, also 24 hour, he stopped and went in. A store like this was good to know of, and he had to do some shopping later, so, yes. Soon, with his laptop opened up, and some hot chocolate and espresso in front of him, he was doing just fine.
For 3 a.m., that is.
Since it didn’t seem like there were too many 24 hour places open, Jess tended to go the same ones all the time. She had been on a job and didn’t feel like waking Carol up. Not with her insomnia. So she’d left Carol a note for when she woke up and went to find a big plate of pancakes. She was just sitting down when she spotted a familiar face and gave a wave.
“Hey. I see you’re another night owl.”
“Jessica! Doc! How are you doing?” He knew she was a scientist, not a doctor, but still. He smiled to her. “I love night time, and sometimes the sleepless bug just bites.”
No one ever called her Doc before. Jess grinned a little. “I’m really good actually. Just starving and a bit of an insomniac. I got you. Can I sit?” Might as well right? “Unless you’re busy.”
“Join me, please!” He grinned and waved a hand. “Nah, wandering, utterly bored, unable to sleep, and trying not to go so far as picturing all the people I know as Ninja ponies…”
She slid into the booth across from him and grabbed a menu. Ah yes. Food. “Looks like we’re both in the same boat. Ninja.. ponies?” her eyebrows raised up. What the hell was that?
“It’s a cartoon out now, with colorful characters and lots of ninja action, and a moral in every episode. Never seen it?” He grinned at her.
“Ponies.. who are ninjas.” Jess just kind of blinked a bit. “Nope. Can’t say I’ve seen a cartoon pony show.” Maybe she should watch it.
“Should look it up. If you can make it past the sometimes juvenile writing, it has some pretty keen action scenes.“
Billy liked it… sometimes.
“I’ll see if I can find it. Give it a try.” Though she didn’t know about magical ponies. Jess would try anything though. “So how do you picture me as a ninja pony then? I mean if I was one.”
Billy hmmed, squinting, then grinned wider. “Red coat, dark black mane for your hair, and shiny like, earth brown eyes, with like, a magical ninja nunchuck set that allows you to conduct attacks across long distances.” He nodded again.
Jess couldn’t help but laugh a little. “How do ponies use nunchucks?” Because she would like to see that.
“Shhh don’t ask. It’s probably something to do with the offscreen sex that happens and produces little ninja ponies.” He chuckled.
“Okay. I’ll just go with it and try to never ever think of ponies having sex. No offense.” Because that was kind of disturbing.
Billy laughed. “Whatever works for you.” He shrugged. Sex was just a thing, and he just blushed. “Sorry if I disturbed you.” He tried not to do that.
She shook her head a little. “Nah it’s okay. Just not a fan of horse sex.” But what did she know? When the waitress came over, she ordered a lot of food and sat back. “So what are you up to? In general I mean.”
Billy facepalmed and nodded, then ordered and settled back himself. “Working, volunteering, and starting school. Senior year, you know? Not sure if My job will be there after this fall, but I am hopeful.” He smiled. He had been a gopher for a year now, but the show he had been assigned to was being closed and that could mean a new job with the company, or it could mean he was without one, and he wouldn’t know until the last days, of then. “Working on college stuff, a lot too.”
“That’s enough to keep you super busy. I can see why you’re awake at a diner this late, trying to get a bunch of stuff done.” It reminded her of herself when she was that age. “You know in my dreams I never went to school? I went to like this terrorist group organization who gave me tutors. It was kind of awful. I’m so glad that’s not actually my life.”
Billy nodded. “Life moves too fast, and in order to have any time while people are awake to be with people, I have to take time like now to do stuff.” He smiled, then nodded. “Yeah, me either in my dreams. I never even made it out of elementary school. And by the time I was sixteen, I was permanently stuck in a body over twice my age.”
“That makes sense. Though sleeping is really good.” Jess loved to sleep. Loved it a whole lot. But it did leave less time to do a bunch of other stuff. “Wow.. stuck in a body twice your age? Yikes. That.. has got to suck. How did that happen?”
“Sleeping? Wassat?” He chuckled. “A wizard decided I hgad a pure enough soul to withstand being given awesome cosmic powers, and so whenever I do a thing, I become a man who is around 35, and superhuman. But eventuallyu, the wizard was killed, and I was given his powerrs, abruptly, see? And so I was stuck, the power not letting me ever change back.” Until he had lost them for awhile, but when he had gotten them back he had been stuck again.
Jess listened with a knowing nod of her head. Somehow none of this ever sounded crazy to her anymore. “That is such a random thing. Like here is all this power. Draw back, you’re going to have hair on your back. The rest of it is pretty nifty though. Your powers show up here?”
"Exactly. Most of the time, I don't mind, but sometimes, its annoying." He grinned at her, then. "Wanna see?" He slipped a ring out of his pocket.
Her head nodded enthusiastically. She liked seeing that sort of thing on other people. “Yeah show me. I mean if it’s not dangerous.” was he really going to change to an older guy? That’s so funny.
Billy grinned and slid the ring on, talking in a mimic of an old cartoon announcer’s voice. “Fabulous powers were revealed to me when I put on this ring and called out the magic word the wizard Shazam had given me!” And lightning flashed, and then, there where Billy had been, Captain Marvel sat. He smiled with the same smile and eyes as Billy, even if he was around 35-ish, and built like the perfect man.
Thankfully there wasn’t that many people around, so only one or two were actually paying attention. Maybe they would just shrug it off? Whatever. Jess looked wholly amused, and couldn’t help but laugh. “Holy shit. That’s so.. weird. You’re my age.”
Billy would make sure the magic kept them disinterested and calm. In he meantime, he grinned at Jessica ina boyish fashion. “No way are you 35. Not a chance. You look younger than that. Er, to me.” He nodded.
That must be nice, to keep everyone docile. She could kind of do that too, but only with men. And it got out of control. “Well a lady doesn’t reveal her age, but I am definitely this side of thirty.” She could say that with confidence.
Billy squinted at her, then nodded. “Well, if you say so. I won't argue, but you don’t look it, Ma’am.” He nodded.
Jess put up her fingers, “Scout’s honor.” Though she was clearly not American. “Thank you for saying so though. You just made my day.”
“You’re welcome.” He nodded to her, then smiled. “It’s nice to see you out and about. Maybe we can wander the crazy city sometime.”
“Yeah I’d like that. We should definitely.” Jess agreed. When the food came, she pretty much shut up and dived in.
