Sam was in her office catching up on emails and lesson preparation. She’d gotten a lot done in the week she’d been in another body, not leaving the house had been good for something even if Lizzie disagreed.
She’d asked Jane to come in so she could see what progress she had made over the summer and also to see how much time the other woman would have to assist her as the students returned over the next couple of weeks.
Jane was glad to have been invited to Professor Carter's office. It had been a while since they had met up and she hoped her tutor had lots of juicy work for her to get her teeth into. She knocked on the door and waited to be invited in.
“Come in” Sam called out smiling as she looked at the clock knowing it would be Jane, “Hi, good to see you?” she said gesturing Jane to a seat, “How’s your summer been?”
"Good thanks," Jane smiled, sitting in front of the desk. "Got lots of work done with the particle accelerator which was awesome! How about you?"
“Oh good, I look forward to seeing your work” Sam smiled, “Oh well it was eventful. I take it you heard about the body swapping incident?” she waited for Jane’s confirmation, “Well let’s just say I don’t react too well to surprise situations”
"I should be able to have something put together for a paper in a month or so," Jane smiled proudly. "Oh no! You were caught up in all of that? What happened?"
“That’s excellent news Jane” Sam replied proud of her too, “I was. I changed bodies with a man on the street I’d never met before. It was an uncomfortable feeling to be in someone elses skin”
"I can only imagine..." Jane mused. "How did that even happen? How did it get fixed?"
“A woman on the net claimed responsibility though she never explained how” Sam replied, “I don’t have many theories either. I mean it’s unprecedented, it shouldn’t even be possible”
"Exactly!" Jane leant forward in the desk. "How would you imprint the exact same memories and thought process onto another already developed human brain?"
“It’s not only that though, it’s being able to place those memories into a human brain whilst simultaneously removing the memories and processes that the brain already contains. It’s simply not possible to do”
“Well, with all due respect it is possible,” said Jane gently with a smile. “It did happen, you experienced it first-hand, but the mechanism behind it must be so complex that we just can’t understand it...” she explained. “Yet,” she grinned.
“Well yes fine, it is possible it just shouldn’t be” Sam replied her lips twitching into a smile, “I swear this county is going to drive me crazy with all it’s possible impossibilities”
Jane laughed at that, “The joys of living in the OC, at least it keeps pushing us to consider new and...sometimes crazy possibilities.”
“True” Sam agreed, “Though my dreams are doing enough of that. There really aren’t enough hours in the day to study all of this stuff”
“You have dreams too?” Jane asked. “What sort of weird stuff do you dream of? Norse Gods?” she joked, fully anticipating the answer to be no.
“Actually yes” Sam replied, “Well sort of” she said and explained the basic premise of the Stargate program, goauld and how it all began.
“That’s amazing!” Jane gaped after hearing the story. “So in your dreams you’re part of a secret government agency? Sounds cooler than Men In Black,” she joked.
Sam nodded, "Yep totally secret. And the alien technology is amazing, beyond anything we currently have here"
"Even beyond Stark?" Jane asked. His was at the forefront of pioneering modern technology after all, he had all the cool gadgets.
“In some ways” Sam replied, “There’s this healing device that can practically fix you up as good as new and you know come to think of it the Asgard downloaded data into Jack’s brain one time. I wonder if the process they used would be similar to a bodyswap”
"Downloaded an advanced alien race's data into someone's brain?" Jane repeated. "Sign me up!" she joked.
“Yeah” Sam said, “Don’t be too quick to wish for it, Jack nearly died because of it”
“Ah,” Jane grimaced a little. “Less good,” she smiled. “Did you...do you...who’s Jack?”
“Oh” even in this world Sam blushed, “Jack O’Neill, my commanding officer. He’s the leader of SG-1 which is the team I’m on”
“Commanding officer…” Jane repeated, rolling the thought around in her mind for a minute. “I can’t really imagine you in the military...no offense,” Jane smiled.
Sam laughed, “Now you say that but it actually could have happened here. If my dad had gotten his way I would be in a military career right now”
"Really?" Jane's eyebrows shot up in surprise. "So what happened? How did you come to teaching?"
“I went into research and then this opportunity came along and I decided to give it a go” Sam replied, “The university approached me a number of times, I guess they just wore me down. I wasn’t convinced I’d be any good at it you see”
"What? Teaching?" Jane asked disbelievingly. "But you're a great teacher!"
“Thank you” Sam told her heartfelt, “But I really thought I’d be kicked out in my first week. I’ve never been a people person”
"No need to thank me when it's the truth," Jane shrugged. "What happened? Why would you get kicked out?"
“Oh nothing happened, it was just an irrational thought” Sam replied, “Professor Weir, who by the way is very much a people person, finds me rather amusing at times”
"I know what you mean, if I didn't have my friend Darcy I think I'd never speak to anyone," Jane laughed. "I seem to meet people by accident more than intent," she shrugged, thinking about meeting Gwen and Merlin at Stark.
“Sometimes that’s easier” Sam said, “There’s a lot to be said for accidental meetings” It had been how she had first meet Lizzie after all.
Jane nodded sagely at Sam's words. "So uh, what can I do to help you get ready for class?"
“Right, yes” Sam nodded, picking up some papers which had been sat in front of her, “I have the lesson plans done but there are a few pop quizzes which I thought you could help me with?”
"Sure, do you want me to make the quizzes up then?" Jane asked.
“If you don’t mind, I can let you know the topics that will be covered that they need to focus on” Sam smiled at her, “And I might ask you to help me field questions when the students start working on their personal projects after Christmas”
"Yep and yep, all fine with me," Jane smiled. "Sounds like fun!"
“Great, thank you Jane. Please let me know if I ever give you too much. I wouldn’t want to overload you, I know you’re doing lots of work already”
"All sounds manageable to me," Jane smiled. "I'm happy to help Professor."
“I’m happy too, I couldn’t do it without you Jane” Sam replied, “Even if you do insist on called me Professor” she teased. No matter how many times she tried her young TA just couldn’t get the hang of calling her Sam.
"Sorry, force of habit," Jane winced.
“It’s not a problem” she assured Jane, “Really”
Jane smiled, feeling a little bashful, but it still felt weird to her to address her professor on such familiar terms. "When do you want the quizzes done by?"
“I’ll let you have the lesson plan outline then you’ll know when I need them by” Sam told her, “Then you don’t have to rush or worry”
“Great, I’m going to try and tie up any loose ends of my work at Stark’s this week and I have a painting job to do for someone on the Net, but otherwise I’m free,” Jane smiled as she told Professor Carter her plan.
“That sounds very organised” Sam smiled, “I wasn’t aware you painted Jane and getting commissions too, should I be worried about a career change from you?” she asked.
Jane laughed at that, "No, it's just a hobby on the side really. I've been painting for as long as I remember and when someone said they wanted butterflies painted on the side of their house...well, the world needs more butterflies in my opinion." She shrugged a little, feeling a faint blush colouring her cheeks as she talked about her art.
“Oh I completely agree. What a wonderful idea” Sam replied, smiling at Jane’s slight blush. “And what a wonderful hobby, you just keep revealing more and more talent don’t you?”
"Well, I have to try and get out of the lab somehow," Jane smiled. "What about you? Do you have any hobbies?"
“I’m afraid not” Sam told her, “I don’t get out very often at all, my life revolves around science. I went to a couple of antiques fairs which were fun but the interest waned somewhat” Mostly when Gold disappeared.
“Antiques? Why didn’t you keep going?” Jane asked, her natural curiosity hard to restrain.
“Oh well, the man I was kind of...dating at the time had an antique business but since that relationship ended...” she shrugged.
“Sorry,” Jane winced, knowing she’d touched on a delicate subject. “I didn’t mean to pry, sometimes the questions just...pop out of my mouth before I have time to think,” she apologised.
“Oh it’s fine, don’t worry about that” Sam replied, “I encourage you to ask questions, I’m just not used to them being directed at me in a non-physics way”
“It’s a shame,” Jane said. “You’re too good to be shackled to a desk when there’s so much out there,” she told her, realising as she said it that it was the pot calling the kettle black since her dating scene was as hard to identify as the Higgs Boson Particle.
“Oh well thank you Jane” Sam replied with a somewhat shy smile, “That’s very sweet of you to say”
“Well it’s true,” Jane shrugged. “A brilliant mind like yours should have a partner, someone to challenge you,” she smiled.
“I definitely need to keep you around, you’re very good for my self esteem” she smiled.
Jane laughed at that. “What can I say? It’s a natural talent,” she shrugged. “Do you need anything else?”
“Nope, you’re free to go” Sam replied with a nod, “Thank you Jane, you are a star. I’d be lost without you now”
“You’re welcome,” Jane smiled as she went to stand. “Anytime,” she told her tutor. “See you later, Professor,” she said over her shoulder on her way to the door.
“See you later” Sam waved as Jane disappeared before returning to her paperwork.
