Michael hadn’t been planning on coming into the Bakery on his day off but that was before he’d found out that there was a musician coming in that night and his curiosity got the better of him which why he was sitting in the back corner of the room just listening. The guy was good and as the last number for the set finished he stood up and made his way over towards him, waiting patiently for a chance to talk to him about his music.
“That was some damn good playing man. I liked the chord changes, you made them look almost easy” he said casually, offering his hand to shake. “I’m Michael.”
Draco was playing his usual Thursday slot and getting a good reaction. It was a good crowd and he was getting some great feedback too.
As he finished his set he moved from the piano to pack up his guitar when he was approached by a guy he didn't recognise, "Hi, thanks man. Always nice to hear good comments" he smiled, "I'm Draco, pleased to meet you" he shook Michael's hand.
“I can’t imagine you’d hear all that many negative ones,” Michael said with a smile. He’d never had difficulty complimenting someone when they deserved it, especially if it was another musician. “I gotta be honest, I came up here tonight to see what another musician in the area was doing to draw in crowds like I’d heard you did and Audrey keeps giving me Thursdays off,” he said with a half shrug.
“Well thank you” Draco nodded, he did hear a lot of good things but he appreciated all of them. “Checking out the competition?” he grinned, “It’s a good plan. I’m lucky I’ve got a pretty loyal following and regular gigs mean people always know where to find you”
“Yeah I am. Figured I might be able to learn some things by watching about building a following out here,” he said, deciding to just be honest. “I should have known it wouldn’t be as easy as it was back home,” he admitted. He wasn’t pitying himself by any means, just stating a fact. There were people out here who knew his name, some of them pretty surprising to him but it wasn’t moving as fast as he’d hoped it would when the record company had asked him to come out and meet with them about signing a contract. “Audrey and I have been talking about me playing here sometime but, we haven’t set a day for that yet.”
“Well if I can help I’m more than happy to” Draco said as he finished packing away his guitar, indicating a table close by he moved to sit, perfectly happy to chat for a while. “It does take time to build up support. I’ve played at coffee shops for almost a year now - on and off but Audrey has kindly allowed me Thursday’s here. You’ll find word of mouth travels faster with a regular gig”
Michael followed Draco to the table he’d indicated taking the other seat and just listening while the other man talked. “I guess I got spoiled growing up in a small town like I did. I didn’t have to worry about building up support, it was just kind of there, if that makes sense” he said looking down at the table for a few seconds. “I didn’t have to worry about building it, just expanding it. The only person I’ve talked to about playing in their place is Audrey. I really don’t know who else to talk to so any leads you could give me on that I’d appreciate.”
“I get what you mean. My mom is a singer and has a large following, I could use her contacts but I kind of want to build up my own” Draco told him, “I do however have a number of people I can put you in touch with” he smiled, not minding helping out a fellow musician.
“That’s it exactly. I’m glad for their help back home, but I want to do this on my own out here from now on,” Michael told him. “With the exception of the house my granddad left me I mean,” he said laughing quietly. If it weren’t for Sam leaving the place to him, he wouldn’t have been able to move out to California himself let alone offer his friends a place. “That would be awesome Draco,” he said returning that smile and relaxing into his chair some.
“Well this is a great place to try and gain that independence” Draco told him, “And there’s plenty of inspiration around here” he grinned. “No worries. I’ll send you some numbers and let them know you’ll be calling, otherwise you’d struggle getting past the guard dogs on the phone”
Michael grinned back at him as he responded, “Oh I’ve definitely found some inspiration out here. It wasn’t lacking in Texas but it’s different out here somehow. Different people helping it along.” He pulled his phone out of his pocket and set it on the table between them. “I can believe it,” he said with a soft laugh. He picked his phone up and opened up the address book to put in a new entry. “You want to put your number in so that I don’t risk mixing the numbers up?” he asked holding the phone out to him.
Draco nodded, “It’s all about new experiences and people, everything can influence us” he said before nodding and taking the phone to tap in his contact details. “There you go” he said handing it back, “I’ll make the calls and send over the numbers as soon as I can” he promised.
Michael smiled as he slid his phone back into his pocket. “Thanks Draco. You got a piece of paper I can write mine down on for you?”
“I can go one better than that” he replied before pulling his own phone from his pocket and handing it over.
Michael laughed softly as he took the phone and input his contact information, double checking it quickly before handing the phone back. “If one of my roommates answers, I wouldn’t trust leaving a message with them unless it’s Claire.”
Draco nodded, “I’ll remember that” he said, “The only other person who might answer my phone is my husband, who is also currently my manager so you can definitely trust him to get a message to me. Speaking of I should probably get going, I promised him some of Audrey’s pastries and a sparkling latte” amusement and love laced his tone. “Good to meet you though and I’ll be in touch soon”
“Alright Draco. I’ll keep that in mind,” Michael told him. “Thanks for talking to me and it was nice meeting you,” he said holding out his hand to shake again before standing up and heading towards the door, stopping to talk to some of the regular customers he’d become friendly with that were in the crowd that night.
