Emma wasn’t feeling well at all. The change was so sudden she initially thought it was morning sickness. Rushing behind the receptionist’s desk to vomit in her wastebasket was never a good start to the day.
After washing her face and mouth in the bathroom Emma went to her father’s office. She was shivering under her blazer, and her face was flushed. She looked exactly as bad as she felt.
Belle blinked and shot out of her chair, moving quickly to Emma’s side. “Dieu, come sit, Mrs. Summers.”
Emma was feeling too crappy to even snark at Belle, and let herself be led. Belle looked at Winston for orders once Emma was sitting. She made sure she stood behind Emma, so her worry wouldn’t be evident to the other woman.
Winston rose as he heard the commotion and when he saw Emma, he paled. “Miss Boudreaux, Call an ambulance, now.” His voice merited no hesitation. “Then get a unit of Frost Enterprises security to sweep the area, and another one to the hospital immediately.”
He went to Emma, and knelt before her. “What happened?” He noticed a slight greenish tint to her face and shook his head. What the hell?
“Yes, sir.” Belle said as she took off to do what she’d been told. Emma looked up at her father, frowning deeply. “I just need to go home, I’ll be fine, Father.”
“No, I don’t think so. I’ve seen people suddenly feel this bad before. Most died quickly. You are going to the hospital if I have to carry you there myself.” He poked her lightly.
“Fine.” Emma noted with a sigh, before suddenly standing up and rushing for the bathroom again.
Belle watched her go, sighing softly. “You’ll need t’ tell Scott. Ambulance’ll be here in five minutes, here’s the phone. I’m gonna go cancel your meetin’s and then join the security team.”
“Good. Secure this place, then join the one at the hospital.:” He rubbed his face as he rose and nodded. He dialed Scott. After a brief conversation with his son in law, he lifted his secure briefcase and composed himself as he waited for Emma to come out again.
Belle nodded and took off toward the security headquarters. She wondered if Wolfwood would be there, and if she could take him along to help with boredom.
Emma staggered out after a few minutes. She’d washed her face again, but she still felt and looked miserable. “Fine.” She muttered when she was close enough. “You win.”
“Not until you’re better, daughter.” The front desk buzzed up to Belle’s desk that the ambulance was there. Winston kept donating money to them, so they tended to respond to his calls a little fast.
“I’ll walk you down.”
Emma sighed. “They’ll come to us anyway, won’t they?” She felt bad for being so lazy, but the walk back to reception was just too long to deal with.
“They can.” He eyed her, and then nodded. “They will.” he called the lobby and made sure they understood to come up the express elevator. “Just try to rest, Emma. I called Scott. He’ll meet us there.”
“Okay.” She said, but she wasn’t listening that well. She had a headache now, of all things, and it was making it harder to focus.
A few minutes later, the EMTs came in and soon had Emma on a gurney and were wheeling her out. “I’ll meet you at the hospital, Emma.” And he followed them out.
Emma threw up almost as soon as the ambulance was in motion, and again while they were looking her over at the hospital. They assured her that Magius was on his way, and that he’d called ahead to give the details of her care so far. Not that she was really able to focus on all of that. She was so cold and tired she could barely stand it.
Winston watched them go, then started to trot toward the garage and his driver and car. On the ground, he didn’t notice a strange rock gleam suddenly but he did feel a surge of heat, and then energy seemed to burst into him. With a cry, his trot became an uncontrollable run, and his run became… something else. When he could focus, he found himself running on water and cried out in surprise, managing to turn around in an arc, and somehow not even remotely ,losing speed, running across water toward the beach and the ground that swam up toward him.
And then he was past the beach and past a small town are and in the heart of the city and he forced himself to try to focus and realize what was going on and he realized this must be some form of acceleration and that he had to STOP!
And he stumbled, tripped, and slammed sideways into a wall, slumping to the ground. A doctor smoking nearby turned, then swore and ran to him. “Sir? Sir? Are you okay?”
Winston, who felt dizzy, headachey, and short of breath, nodded. “Yes, ah… sorry, got lost. Where am I?”
The man looked him askance. “You’re outside the employee lounge at Irvine General.”
“Ahhh!” Winston straightened his suit, nodded and strode in, through the lounge and out. He was so hungry! Damn! What the hell was going on?
A few minutes later, he was sitting in Emma’s emergency room. “Hello, dear. Magius is on his way, almost here. I won’t keep you, but… please… take care of yourself.”
He was going to murder a cow, sometime soon. Maybe two.
Emma waved at him and nodded. “I’ll be fine, Dad. Don’t worry.” She was still feeling pretty out of it.
Winston left, then, to see if he could shake some help out of the trees for Emma, and to see what he could find out.
