Lets start with pudding, and then work our way from there
Who: Emma and Scott
What: Worrying
Where: Hospital
When: 9/9
Status: complete!
Emma was not having a good day. Her father was right when he said to get her to the hospital. The nurses lost their minds when she threw up for the fourth time during the admission process. Now she was in a bed and feeling miserable instead of being at work and feeling miserable. She felt so cold she could barely deal with it. They were talking about giving her an ice bath. She remembered how much fun she’d had doing that to Scott and wished he was there to hold her hand while it happened.
She didn’t have her phone anymore, and that fact made her really upset. She didn’t know if he knew she was in trouble or not. She could try to contact him telepathically, but she was far away from the Ranch and might not be able to reach that far. She was considering the merits of taking over a nurse’s brain and using her to make a phone call. Or maybe one of her father’s security people, they were just loitering outside anyway.
Scott came in, taking her hand as he took a seat. It had been a long drive out from the ranch, but he hadn’t been able to reach the teleporters and he didn’t think that the jet would have been very inconspicuous. “You look like you’ve been put through the ringer.”
Emma smiled at him. “Hey. Yeah. I was fine until I got halfway to work.” She squeezed his hand. “We managed to stay out of here for a few months, at least.”
“Do they know what’s going on yet?” He asked, bringing her hand to his lips. He smiled a little wanly.
“Not yet. I haven’t really been looked at, they just took my temperature and warned me that I’d have to get it down, like I have control over it or something.” She rolled her eyes. “And you can see they put an IV in me for fluids. They’re contacting Magius now to see if there are any issues with giving me a fever reducer.” She stroked his face softly. She wasn’t as anxious anymore. Having Scott close was an immense help.
“Don’t you know you have some magical healing powers?” Scott asked. “..I should call Faiza.”
“It wouldn’t hurt anything. Is there much she can do for a fever?” Emma wasn’t sure, but it was worth a shot. Anything was better than staying here.
“I don’t know, but she could take a look at it. I’d hate to bother her if it’s not serious.”
Emma frowned at Scott. “I’m in the goddamn hospital. It’s serious. But I also don’t think she can do anything, so it would be a waste of her time for that reason.”
Scott resolved to call her in once they had more information. If it was some kind of food poisoning maybe she could pull out whatever was bad. “I’ll message her anyway.”
“Whatever you want.” Emma said with a sigh. “LIke I said, I won’t say no to her looking me over.” She put her hands over her belly and took a deep breath. “If I could stop throwing up that would be lovely.” Maybe if she just got enough air the nausea would go away on its own.
“Will it hurt the baby?” Now that he was sure Emma wasn’t dying, he could worry about other things.
“The fever is the biggest danger.” She closed her eyes and concentrated. “They’re going to try chemical fever reducers and ice pack on my pressure points, but if that doesn’t work they’re going to take more extreme measures.” She sighed. “The vomitting will be bad if it persists, so I’ll get a medication for that as well. I haven’t been formally admitted yet, they’re hoping they can get things under control and send me home today.”
He’d prefer to have her home too. He felt this was something he couldn’t fight, and it was driving him nuts. Disease was one of those things he couldn’t strategize around. A few incidents not withstanding. “How long does it take to run tests?”
“The only thing they really want to do is monitor my temperature right now. They say my symptoms are so general it could be anything.” Which was frustrating to Emma as well. “I just don’t know how I went from feeling fine this morning to ending up here.”
“Was it something you ate? Or maybe someone gave you something.” It could just be the flu, pushed over the edge by the pregnancy.
“I had the same thing as you, and you’re not sick.” She sounded just a little petulant. “I don’t know, I just wish I’d stop feeling crappy. I had a lot to do today.”
“It’ll have to wait until tomorrow,” he replied, leaning against the bed and kissing her hand again.
“I suppose so.” She smiled at him. “I’m glad you’re here. I’m already tired of today.”
“We could use a redo.” Scott nodded his head in agreement. He was locking his fears deeply, deeply away.
“Have to get on that time travel device.” Emma noted wryly, squeezing his hand. A nurse came in, and recited what Emma already said, then gave her a few pills, took her temperature again, and left.
“Do not even joke about that,” Scott said, laughing.
Emma smiled when he laughed. “Of course not, love. We’re very serious people.”
“That’s something we need to work on,” he agreed.
“After this I think we should take a weekend away. See if we can be a little less serious.” She’d need the chance to relax, anyway.
“I’ll make the time,” Scott promised. He’d also probably not leave her side except when she kicked him out.
She smiled softly. “I know. I think I’ll need to take it a little easier at work. If food poisoning or a bug took me out so quickly my system must be stressed.” The baby was stressful enough. She felt foolish for not realizing that earlier.
“Take some time off. You can survive a week without work,” Scott said, sternly.
“I’ll probably have to cut my hours, which will preclude working at the ranch.” She sounded genuinely sad about that.
“I think Wrex would understand.” It might not hurt as bad having a pregnant woman around for him. Wrex would never have his own kids.
“I’m sure he will.” She said with a nod. A nurse came in to check her temperature and reported that it was down a little. Emma looked relieved. The nurse left again to check with Magius about something or other, Emma didn’t care enough to pay attention.
Thank god. Scott closed his eyes and rested his forehead against the side of the bed. He lifted his head after a moment. “See. You’ll be fine.”
Emma stroked his hair softly while he composed himself. “And you’re going to take the day off to make sure I stay that way.” She remembered how it felt to be sitting where he was, and she wanted to help him relax after all that stress.
He smiled ruefully. “I already have.”
“Good.” Now they just had to wait to be cleared to go. “I wonder if I can keep food down.” She wasn’t sure if she was hungry or if her stomach was still upset.
“Lets start with pudding, and then work our way from there.” Scott nodded his head. “and I’ll break out the bucket.”
“Ah, the glamorous life I lead.” Emma noted dryly. “Can you see if they have pudding in the cafeteria?”
Scott got to his feet. “I need to report to your father anyway.”
“Be nice.” Emma said with a soft smile. “I’ll be here.”
