Winston was annoyed, afraid, and concerned. His daughter Emma had nearly collapsed and looked like Death cooled down. It was a look like many Winston had seen in his life. A bad look. And he was determined to help her. He had bullied her into going to the hospital right before she darted into the restroom to be sick.
And Scott deserved to know what had happened. So he lifted the phone Belle had given him and dialed the number her now knew by heart. He felt jittery and worried, and could only hope Emma would be okay when she got out of the bathroom and back from the hospital. Damn it.
Scott was at the ranch, when he answered, watching some of the kids as they learned the fine art of feeding pigs. It was unintentionally hilarious, which was the best part. He was smiling when he answered. “Summers.”
“Scott, this is Winston. Emma appears to be coming down sick, and I’m sending her to the Irvine General from here. I thought you would want to know.:” Concern and worry stretched Winston’s voice thin as he spoke concisely.
“Sick?” Scott flagged down one of the other staff, asking them to take over. “I’m on my way. Do we know what it is?”
“No, but it doesn’t look good. She looks, well, actually green. I’ve never seen anything like it.” Just then Winston’s cellphone buzzed and he looked at it. “Did you get this text?”
Alex Summers’s series if texts were simple and stark.
>> Something weird happening
>> Meteorites fell
>> Lorna split into two
>> Plants gone mad and attacking out here.
>> Watch your backs.
Scott looked at his own phone, which buzzed, then held it back to his ear. “What the hell’s going on now.” He sounded exasperated.
“More Orange County Madness, it seems. I’ll see if I can learn anything more on the way to the hospital. Might be worth your while to get the word out yourself. Maybe we can get a handle on this whatever it is, before it gets too bad.” Winston was watching the bathroom door and waiting for Emma to come out.
“I’ll let Wrex and Shepard know before I leave,” Scott said, though his mind was more on Emma than anything else. “Most of the others I’d contact would already be on Alex’s contact list.”
“Okay. I’ll meet you at the hospital then. I’ll have her doctor informed as well, so he should be there as soon as he can.” Winston signalled to his assistant who was nearby, and then nodded.
Scott would rather have Faiza there, but he couldn’t bother her for everything, could he? “All right. I’ll see you there.”
“Of course.” Winston hung up and talked to Belle, then waited for Emma to come out.
