To say that Lorna wanted everything to go well between her family and Scott’s was an understatement. She was obsessed with getting everyone to make up. For one thing, she knew neither man was truly at fault for what had happened. They’d both had very compelling reasons to act the way they had. For another, this was her only family now, except for her uncles and aunts in different states.
She worked hard in the kitchen all day, dragooning Darius into helping. He only had one good arm, but he could grab things.
By the time they’d agreed to meet and have dinner arrived she had an enormous meal ready, and she’d expended most of her nervous energy in the process.
Alex had cleaned, and put together a mini-pavillion outside, and made sure they had plenty of water and other drinks in ice filled coolers. Now he went to meet Lorna with a smile. “You’ve done amazing, love.”
Lorna smiled and floated all the food out with her powers. She set the table by hand, trying not to be nervous. “Thank you. I hope everything goes okay.”
Emma stepped out of the car, examining Alex and Lorna’s house. It was smaller the last time she saw it. “We should get the name of his contractor if we’re still going to alter our place.” She noted to Scott.
“Probably a good idea, though lately I’d rather talk to Shepard’s.” Panic rooms, reinforced glass.
“It’ll be fine..” Alex kissed Lorna as she finished, then turned. He heard the car doors. “Aha! We have guests!” He headed toward the front door.
Nate bounced out of the car that had parked behind them, smiling. He had been feeling a lot better lately. “We could check them both out?”
Lorna smiled brightly when she heard the rest of the family arrive. Darius looked uneasy, and made excuses to go visit with Mavis instead.
Emma nodded in response to Nate’s suggestion, waiting politely at the front door for Alex to open it.
Scott put his arm around Emma. He decided that was probably good idea. He’d sleep better knowing there was some kind of defense in place.
Nate smiled . He was enjoying this so far. When he knocked at the door, Alex answered and let them in, smiling. “Welcome, everyone. Come on in. The dining room awaits!”
He stepped aside to let them come in, hoping the dinner party would go well.
Lorna grinned at them, trying not to be nervous. It wasn’t like they were four people with completely different worldviews who worked well as couples but not a group. It also wasn’t like the only tie the families had to each other was a tenuous relationship between two stubborn jerks who previous to the start of this year hadn’t spoken to each other for years.
She hoped she didn’t look too desperate for this to work out.
Emma had to repress amusement at Lorna’s mental state. “Your house is very nice, it seems like your contractor did a good job fixing things.”
“I like it,” Scott said. “I’m glad that’s finally settled for you.”
Nate grinned and bounced. “Anything I can help with in the kitchen?”
Alex took the opportunity. “Lorna, will you show them our new kitchen? I want to talk to Scott for a moment and show him the grill.” He waved a hand at Scott, nodding. “If you don’t mind. We got a new one, and it has one of those newfangled attachments that lets you cook a cake on it, but I want to check up on it.”
Lorna nodded, smiling brightly at Nate. “Thank you, it’s very nice of you to offer. Will you be joining us, Emma?”
Emma laughed a little and nodded. “Yes, I wouldn’t want to interupt manly bonding time.” She kissed Scott’s cheek before following Lorna into the kitchen.
“I see they’re going to leave us to our own devices,” Scott said, folding his arm and sounding like he didn’t entirely mind.
Alex chuckled and led the way out to the deck. “Yeah. Come on. I’ll show you the cake I’m baking.” He grinned.
“I’m not going to kiss the cook,” Scott joked. “How did you get all this done so quickly, and how much do I need to bribe you to get their number?”
Alex chuckled. “We are not that sort of family.” He made a face. “Well, it only takes a few hours to cook…”
“Baker, then,” Scott said, clapping his brother on the shoulder. “Either way I’m not kissing you.”
“Good.” Alex laughed. “How’ve things been this week? How are you?”
“Better than before. As you learned when you picked up your wife.” Scott grinned, not entirely ashamed.
“Very true. Good on you. Sometimes, you just need to relax and have fun.” Alex nodded.
“I don’t realize how much I need it until it’s happening.” Scott smiled ruefully. It had been a very nice weekend.
Alex smiled at his brother. “Then you should do it a little more often, bro. Sometimes, we all need to just step outside the zone. And you are a good guy.”
Scott didn’t always feel like a good guy, but he nodded his head. His brother was right. He wouldn’t say that to his face, but he was right. “I’ll pencil it into the schedule.”
"Good. Now lets get the others and get to dinner." Alex smiled. It would be a good night hopefully.
Scott grinned, and turned towards the house. He wondered if they were even getting along.
