Elphaba was browsing through the brightly coloured tops she had found in this section of the clothes shop. Since moving in with Lúthien, she’d felt much braver with her choices when it came to clothes. Lúthien inspired her to be more daring, from her work ethic to her personal choices. She had even been thinking of singing more, maybe even in front of other people. Her eyes caught on a purple floral pattern and she reached out to take hold of it, hand landing at the same time as someone else’s.
“Oh, sorry,” Elphaba apologised to the red head. “After you.”
“Oh, no, it’s quite all right,” The redhead’s voice came out, a smile breaking out across her face. She removed her own hand, and gave a little, sweeping motion. “After you. It’d look better on you, actually.” There was a lot of red in the pattern. Amy couldn’t always pull red off.
“Thanks, but I reckon you’ve got the build to pull it off better than I could,” Elphaba laughed, referring to the red-head’s long limbs and slight figure. “You should be a model with that kind of height,” she smiled.
There was a split second where Amy wondered if one of her friends had put this woman up to it. The woman who looked strangely familiar. She broke into a bit of a smirk--trying not to look too smug--and shrugged one shoulder. “Funny you should mention it, but that’s what I do.”
"Seriously?" Elphaba asked, surprised she'd got it right. "I'm getting better at this fashion stuff," she said happily, more to herself than anyone else. "How long for?"
Amy gave a laugh. “Seriously,” she said, nodding. “Several years now. I was MakeMeNew Cosmetic’s face, just a few months ago. Lately I’ve been in the Tampax commercials.” It was a big campaign. Elphaba may have seen it.
"Ah! I thought you looked familiar!" Elphaba smiled. "Well, this is quite fortuitous, I'm a...business partner of Glinda Upland's," she told the woman, knowing that Glinda's reputation in the modelling world was well established as a famous model. To be honest Elphaba kept wondering how the woman hadn't been on America's Next Top Model. "We're putting together a huge fashion house; loads of local designers coming together to present affordable fashion. We've got a show coming up in the next few months which you might be interested in," Elphaba told her.
Amy’s grin spread a little at the mention of Glinda. Of course Amy had heard of her. It was Amy’s business to know everyone in the business. She was both a model and a keen business woman. Amy respected her, even though they’d never met face to face. “Really?? I’m definitely interested.” Amy said, as if egging the woman on. Tell me more!
“Well, we’re talking to lots of local designers and each one is going to have their own runway show which will culminate in a huge showcase finale of the cream of the crop from all the previous shows,” Elphaba explained, feeling a flicker of the excitement Glinda must feel when talking about the project. “Obviously, we’ll be looking for models and certain designers may have their own choices, but I can set up meetings with them for you if you’d like to meet them and see their work. I know fashion can be quite a personal thing,” she said, thinking about Glinda’s passion for the whole world of fashion.
“I’d like that. I’d like that a lot. I’d love to get into more runway work.” Amy hadn’t done any real runway work. For the most part she’d been in photographs, but hadn’t broken through to live stuff. “Can I give you my contact information?” She turned to dig through her purse, and pulled out a business card with her name, phone, email and a photo of herself on it. Then she handed it over to the other woman.
“Absolutely!” Elphaba grinned as she watched Amy dig through her purse. “Thanks, I’ll put you in the folder,” she smiled, fishing her own purse out of her handbag and placing the card inside. “So you’ve heard of Miss Upland then?”
“Who hasn’t heard of Glinda Upland?” Amy said, giving Elphaba a smile. “It would be an honor to work with her. She’s a bit of an icon.” She added, letting her hands fall down to slip into her pockets.
"I knew she was popular, but I hadn't realised until now just quite how much," Elphaba remarked, eyebrows shooting up to nearly disappear into her hairline at the girl's enthusiastic response. "Well, the project is all about promoting the local, so local models as well as local designers, we'd love to have you on board! I'll see if I can arrange a meeting with you and Miss Upland, she has a good eye for who fits right with who," she smiled.
“That’d be great. I don’t have many other projects coming up until late October, so I’ve got a bit of free time.” Amy said, giving Elphaba a smile. “Tell her that she can call me anytime. My numbers are on that card.”
“Will do,” Elphaba smiled at her. “I look forward to working with you...Amy,” she double-checked on the card. “I’m Elphaba, Elphaba Thropp,” she held out a hand to the girl, realising she hadn’t introduced herself.
“It’s a pleasure, Elphaba.” Amy said, reaching a hand forward to shake the woman’s hand. “And I look forward to your call. I’ll let you get back to your shopping,” she added, then grinned, waved, and turned to head off down the aisle of the store.
