Who: Kasumi and Wrex
When: A saturday or two ago (The day after the heist)
Where: JoeyRay’s
Warnings: Pg-13 for talk of violence
Kasumi typically slept through the morning after working the night shift, but today she’d barely been able to close her eyes, let alone sleep. Upon getting out of bed, she’d tried to avoid people. She’d paced the room, and had a hard time focusing on anything for very long. The first contact she’d made with anyone was Wrex, to ask if he would come act as bouncer tonight.
She had no idea what Giles would be doing. What did people typically do after beheading someone with their bare hands? Would he show up at work like nothing had happened? Kasumi didn’t think she was in danger, exactly. If he was going to attack her, it probably would have been last night, in his rage. She certainly didn’t feel safe, though, and she wasn’t sure she could stand seeing him again. The images kept flashing through her mind.
When she arrived at the bar, she looked pale and haggard.
Wrex didn’t mind stepping in and being a bounce. It was for a good cause (his girlfriend) and sometimes getting to smash a face in felt really, really good. It wasn’t a pasttime he could indulge in at the Ranch. And with Kasumi so very jumpy, he was extra concerned. He just didn’t know how to get her to talk. So he followed her with his eyes.
Kasumi looked shellshocked. She'd arrived early and asked Wrex to come too, just in case they had trouble before the bar even opened. Normally, an early arrival meant she could get some extra tasks done. A more thorough cleaning, going through inventory and ordering anything that was starting to get low. It was normally a relief to get things done in the quiet bar. But tonight, she couldn't focus. In the middle of inventory, her normally graceful fingers slipped.
"Shit." She dropped a full bottle of grenadine, and it shattered on the floor. The deep red syrup spread across the floor and Kasumi’s entire body tensed.
Wrex looked over, watching her again. Now he knew something was wrong, and he decided to be all Krogan about it. He walked over, and put a hand on her shoulder. “You going to tell me what’s wrong?”
Normally, Kasumi relaxed at Wrex's touch. He knew how to work the stress out of her muscles (in more ways than one). Today, though, she was still tight, and she couldn't look away from the spilled liquid. She took a deep breath.
"Last night, I helped Giles break into his mother's house," she said, her voice hushed. "She's loaded, and he wanted to get back at her for abandoning him by stealing some of her art." She hadn't told Wrex earlier because she was sure he wouldn't approve. He was supposed to be a role model for kids. She didn't want him involved in this, even before things went south. "It's the first time I've done anything like that. It felt so right, though. At first."
Oh, no, he definitely didn't approve. The fact he was dating a thief hadn't been lost on him but he hadn't realized that had translated to the waking world too. His mouth form a thin line. "Just the first time? And let me guess things got bad?"
She nodded. First time. Only, really. She didn't feel particularly ashamed of the thieving. She wasn't planning on making a career of it, but she hadn't sworn it off, either.
"Giles--" her voice caught in her throat. She didn't even know how to say it. She was staring off into space, seeing the grizzly scene again in her mind. "He-- I've never even seen Reapers do that to a person."
Wrex's eyes narrowed slightly, and the muscles in his face and shoulders tensed, as though he were expecting something bad to happen. Kasumi had gotten herself into some shit, and he didn't know if he could get her out of it. He'd sure as hell try, though.
"What. The hell. Happened?"
Her eyes closed as she took a deep breath. She didn't know if she could tell him this. It wasn't like in the dreams; it wasn't like in the movies. This was real life, with real consequences. Even if what had happened was entirely surreal. "He ripped off her head," she whispered. "With his bare hands."
He wasn’t sure he’d heard that right. People just didn’t rip off other people’s head, let alone their own family. The kroger shook his head, because it wasn’t like she’d lie to him, not about something like this. The question was what to do about it. Aside from beat the man’s face in for getting her involved in this shit.
“Did you leave any evidence behind?”
"He just lost it. He snapped. I don't.." She still didn't understand it. She didn't know what Giles was in his dreams, but she doubted it was human.
She shook her head. "No evidence." There wasn't any evidence of her breaking in, he knew enough to know that. "No prints.. It doesn't look like there was a break-in." She didn't even take the diamonds. "I left the back door wide open. Made it look like an animal attack."
Of course it didn’t look like a break in, this was Kasumi. Wrex’s shoulders sagged a little, and he nodded. “Not many people would believe a human could that that. I can’t believe you got pulled into this.”
"The break-in was my idea." It was a chilling thought. She didn't take responsibility for what Giles had done, exactly, but the chain of events... "She wasn't supposed to be home."
“Why would you …” Wrex cut himself off. He didn’t need her to answer that. The dreams had an effect on people. “Nevermind. They’re never supposed to be home.” He could feel anger welling up inside him, and he clamped down onto it. He was at a loss for what to do. She was clearly shaken, but she’d been involved something horrible that could have major consequences. “Okay. What we’re going to do is just let things sort out. Let them assume it was some animal. That was a good idea. Lets go with that.” Because it kind of wasn’t a total lie.
Kasumi nodded, feeling a bit like a puppy who'd been caught chewing on something she knew was off limits. "Just.. please, don't leave."
“I won’t,” Wrex said.
