Hermione was carrying a backpack with all of her books from school in them. She had quite a collection now--they just kept appearing. And she knew that this school year she was going to need to focus a little more on her studies than her Dreams, especially considering she’d just changed majors. Life paths, if you will.
Anyway, she knew that she could trust Percy with them. And then she’d have someone to talk to about all the things… Hogwarts, the books, whatever. She needed someone like minded who’d been through something similar to compare notes. She showed up at Percy’s firm, was directed toward Percy’s office by a gargantuan man with shaggy brown hair and a charming smile, and knocked on the door.
That would be Sam, the 800 foot tall lawyer, and Percy’s partner. But not like that.
“Come in,” Percy called from behind that door, sounding a little distracted -- but then, he was at work and he was nearly always a little distracted. Percy was the sort who someone managed to be completely focused on at least a dozen things at a time.
Hermione pushed open the door to let herself into the office. She wasn’t surprised at him being surrounded by paperwork and books, it just seemed natural. Funny how some parts of the dreams--though not all, obviously-- were absolutely true in this life as well as the other. “Percy?” She asked, breaking into a smile at the sight of his office.
Percy glanced up from his papers and rose his eyebrows, clearly surprised to see a non-client or intern there. “Hermione! Hello. Do come in, is everything alright?” Of course he’d assume that she’d be here on business instead of a personal visit. Because he was awkward.
“Oh yes, everything’s fine.” Hermione said, her smile brightening as she stepped into the office. It was very Percy, this office. Clean and neat, not cluttered. Very professional. Very business like. Hermione appreciated that. Her office, if she’d ever have one, would have looked similar. “I brought you some books,” she said, getting straight to business once she was inside.
Her straight to business attitude was appreciated, if only because Percy had always been a wreck when it came to things like small talk. He couldn’t help it, it just wasn’t one of his strengths. “Did you?” He asked, eyebrows raising and a twinkle of interest clearly in his too-blue eyes. “Hogwarts books?”
Hermione was fine with small talk, really. She just understood the person she was talking with, and how he would appreciate it if she got straight to business. She nodded, moving to the chair in front of his desk and set down her backpack in it. She opened it and drew out some books. “Hogwarts books. Here. I’ve got… Spellman's Syllabary, The Monster Book of Monsters,” that one was belted closed and growling a little, “The Rise and Fall of the Dark Arts, Break with a Banshee and An Appraisal of Magical Education in Europe.”
Percy looked absolutely impressed, reaching out to take one of the books as she set them down on the desk (pointedly, he did not choose the Monster book. That would be for later.) “Quite the selection. And you know, I figured out a copying spell. I can do that and then get them back to you rather sooner than later.” It was nice to have his own versions, just in case none ever showed up for him.
“Sure. No problem.” Hermione nodded to the books. “I don’t have time to do as much study into them as I’d like right now, so… keep them as long as you need. I’m trying my best to focus on school this semester.”
Percy smiled at that, understandingly. Focusing on school was something that he knew all about. Truth be told, he should probably be more focused on his work (if it were possible), but he always seemed to be able to set just a little time aside for personal interest these days. These books would do nicely.
“I appreciate it. Full load this semester?”
“Yes. After some community college courses during high school and two full loads of general education classes last year, I’m really digging in. I’ve got most of my general education credits fulfilled, and I’m excited to be starting some coursework in my new major.” Hermione was taking a lot of math and science this semester.
Nodding, Percy absently paged through one of the books she’d loaned him. “You know, I almost rather miss school, sometimes.” He sounded nearly wistful over it.
Hermione nodded. She knew exactly how she felt. She couldn’t imagine being finished with school. “I’m planning on getting so many degrees that I’ll be in debt forever. But I can’t imagine not being in school.” She gave him a bit of a smile. They were alike in that way. In a lot of ways, really.
In a lot of ways, yes. Hermione thankfully seemed to be lacking in Percy’s crippling mental issues, but hey, no one was perfect. “With that many degrees, you’ll certainly find a job that would pay well enough to make a dent in your student loans,” Percy reassured. Not that he could talk -- his own loans were still looming over his head, even though he was technically ahead on payments.
It wouldn’t have surprised Hermione in the slightest to find out that Percy was ahead on payments on his student loans. She hadn’t accrued much debt--after all she’d only been in school for a year. And her parents were still helping, even though they lived in Australia. Now she had Jim’s considerable wealth, too, to help her pay for things. “Well, that’s true. Hopefully I’ll be able to find really good work once I’m done studying. So um… the Monster book? You’re supposed to pet along its spine. That calms it down.”
“I thought that might be the case.” That hadn’t been his text when he’d taken Care of Magical Creatures, but it seemed obvious. For something that was so… odd. That had been his least favorite subject in school, though. It didn’t really suit a boy like Percy who just avoided the outdoors when at all possible. “But really. Thank you, Hermione. It means a lot you’d think to let me read them.”
Hermione closed up her backpack and slung it back up onto her shoulder. It was considerably lighter now that the books were on Percy’s desk instead of in the bag. She nodded, smiling, feeling a little lopsided now that she wasn’t carrying them. “Sure. You’re very welcome, Percy. There are few people that I would trust with them, you know.” She was being honest about that. Harry, yes. Ron, maybe. (Not that he’d read them anyway.) “Make sure to let me know what you think as you read them, hmm?” She added, then headed for the door. “I’ve got some studying to do. I’m sure I’ll talk to you later.”
He knew it was a compliment, her trust, and took it graciously by not being smug at all. “Absolutely I will,” Percy agreed, eyes already going back to the book on his desk, and the paperwork beneath it. “Good luck with your studying.”
